SAN FRANCISCO -- Censored News launched Censored News Blog Radio on Tuesday. The first broadcast was dedicated to Long Walker Lewis 'Mucaw' Jefferson, Quechan, who passed to the Spirit World. The dedication was made with the AIM song by Calvin Magpie and the Longest Walk Northern Route singers at Cahokia Mounds, recorded by Earthcycles.
The show featured Morning Star Gali on the Shellmound Walk; Long Walker Harry's reflections on sheepherding and service with the Black Mesa Caravan on Navajoland; Mohawk Mark Maracle at the AIM-West 40-year Reunion and KPFA's Alcatraz Free Radio interviews with Clyde Bellecourt and Lenny Foster.
Today's show, on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, is the Emergence of the American Indian Movement. Bill Means remembers Raymond Yellow Thunder and the birth of AIM. Clyde Bellecourt speaks of the impacts of AIM. Award-winning Anishinabe singer Keith Secola's songs round out the broadcast. The sounds were recorded by Earthcycles, producer Govinda Dalton and cohost Brenda Norrell, at the AIM-West 40-year Reunion in San Francisco, Nov. 24 -- 28.

The public is invited to attend and add their voices in support of saying, “no to uranium mining.” “On behalf of the Havasupai Tribe, I urge everyone to join us at the foot of this sacred Red Butte to unify our voices and call on the Federal Government to work with the Havasupai Tribe to protect these sacred lands from any further uranium mining,” stated Don E. Watahomigie, Havasupai Tribal Chairman. “We are proud to host this historic gathering as our ancestors have done for generations at Red Butte.” A Canadian company, Denison Mines is threatening to reopen the Canyon Mine, which is just miles from the sacred Red Butte, as a full mining operation. The Havasupai Tribe and others have been actively opposing Denison Mines seeking Groundwater Aquifer Permits from the ADEQ (Arizona Dept. of Environmental Quality) to operate Canyon Mine and extract uranium. The Havasupai Tribe, who have inhabited the Grand Canyon region for many centuries, fear that contamination from uranium mining could harm the animals, air, water, and people. The Havasupai religion is also being directly affected by the uranium mines. Long time Havasupai leader Rex Tilousi says, “We believe Red Butte is the lungs of our Grandmother Canyon.” Canyon Mine is located right next to the Havasupai’s most sacred site, Red Butte.” The Havasupai Tribe, in alliance with Sierra Club, Center for Biological Diversity, and Grand Canyon Trust are opposing any uranium mines on or around the rim of the Grand Canyon. This gathering will be held twenty miles south of the Grand Canyon National Park on July 25 - 26, 2009. Members of the public will be invited to join the Havasupai on Saturday for a free public concert at 6:00 pm and for a public forum on uranium mining and protecting sacred lands on Sunday, July 26th. The media is welcomed to attend at any time during the events on Saturday and Sunday and a news conference will be held Friday, July 24th, at 4pm at the conclusion of the private Havasupai prayer ceremony. Willie Lonewolf Memorial July 8th, Oakland

For our brother Willie Lonewolf who has recently passed on. There will be a Memorial Dinner/Potluck on Wednesday, July 8th, 2009 at the Intertribal Friendship House in Oakland, CA to celebrate the life of Willie. Please bring something to share, main dish, side dish, desserts, salads, beverages, paper goods, etc. We appreciate all that Willie has given to our community and at the dinner would like to honor his life in an appropriate way. Alaska Native coastal communities need your support. Please submit a comment to the Minerals Management Service by the deadline of March 30, 2009 on the ARCTIC OCEAN MULTI-SALE DRAFT ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT
Please take action to spur Obama’s officials to change course in Arctic Ocean away from massive Bush administration leasing and drilling plans.
The Interior Department proposes to offer 73 million acres off Alaska for oil and gas development that will endanger Native communities, harm wildlife, and add to global warming.
The Arctic Ocean Multi-sale draft EIS proposes to lease the entire 73 million acres, using one EIS for the next 4 lease sales starting in 2010.
Oil corporations already have millions of acres leased in the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas.
These lease sales have the potential to seriously affect subsistence resources and Inupiat culture. You can join with others to help change this situation with the new Obama Administration.
Alaskan Indigenous Communities have witnessed offshore oil and gas development destroy communities, disrupt their traditional indigenous cultures, soil beaches, and kill countless numbers of birds, marine mammals, fish, and other wildlife. The Arctic is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of offshore drilling. With broken sea ice prevalent and waters that are treacherous for oil rigs, pipelines and tankers, the threat of oil spills—for which there is no technology available to clean up—is constant.
We have an opportunity to prevent these catastrophes in our Arctic seas.
Please urge Ken Salazar, the new Secretary of Interior, and the Minerals Management Service to stop Arctic oil and gas projects and keep the new Administration’s commitment to reversing climate change, protecting important ecological areas, and respecting the rights of indigenous cultures.

Greetings Relations,
I hope you and yours are well. I am busy as well with the usual things: family, keeping the Dineh stuggle alive, fighting all the debt I owe to the (blood-sucking) corporations, working, coping as a loner (a sane one, ok?), and much more and definely 'not bored.' I have a request and a consideration to ask of you all but some of you do stay in touch and are aware of my "terrorism" or annoyance. I am not a grant writer nor have I accumulated much wealth since 1974 when the traditional people of Big Mtn. asked for my translation/note-taking capabilities. Ever since, I have been (falsely) accused that I "used the elders to make $$$$" and many of you know I'm still a tinker, gyspy and sheepherder --and proud to be. Some out there do write for grants and they pay themselves or attorneys while they divert their ideas away from the real and frontline indigenous struggles. I would like to complete my video project that I began 12 years ago. I am a Dineh of Big Mountain. I did a totally unprofessional production in 1992 called, "Family of the Great Mystery." I had been very inspired from assisting with "Broken Rainbow" and the electronic means of story-telling. However, I have always wished for my elders to tell the stories about their childhood, their struggles and survivals, and their fight against the aggressions of the U.S.A. Today, I am still inspired to put together another story from the Dineh themselves. I feel my time is getting short and I need to transmit the Big Mtn. peoples' message very soon. I ask of you or some of you, today, if you can contribute to my project. I don't have my own technologies and I have to find places where I can use editing programs for free. However, I really need a 500 GB External Drive, one that is new and reliable. A few of you may know about the equipment and time involved in producting a 55 minute documentary. I still have to borrow equipment and make some travels across the Rez for material archives and shooting. Redo one interview since my old Hi8 tape got aged, etc. Well therez more ... So, I would truly appreciate if you can contribute something in the two-digit figure in USD. Three-digit would be great as well, but I know times are hard now. Like I face soon a furlough cuz my employer is cutting back. But my elders' story needs to get out and I will continue to do my best. I hope to raise at least $300 and I am unsure about distribution. Finally, I have posted a demo of my and my (non-English speaking/traditional) elders' project.

LA Times blog: Board members, one of whom survived a recall attempt over the issue, decided in a 3-2 vote to keep the mural and most other Native American likenesses and symbols. Soon to be gone are the glowering red caricatures on athletic patches and a cartoon-like Indian head profile on floor mats. But the board rejected recommendations by an advisory committee to remove the sculpture of a Plains Indian chief in the parking lot, or to purge the district’s logo of a canoe and arrowheads, or to change or eliminate other symbols.

Indian 'Suicide' in Hill County, Montana, Jail

In the bordertown of Havre, Montana
An investigation has been ordered in the death of a 25-year-old Indian man, Eric James Jones, who supposedly committed suicide in lock down. Those who attended his funeral said Eric had bumps on his forehead, a bruised eye and his nose was bruised and swollen.
The news report states: Eric James Jones of Havre, 25, died after committing suicide in the Hill County Detention Center. Jones was being held on a charge of deliberate homicide stemming from the beating death of Kimberly Calf Boss Ribs March 15, 2008. Jones was scheduled to go to trial on April 13.

Indigenous Expose Human Rights Abuses of Uranium Mining Companies

A shack made of metal drums from the local uranium mine (pictured) is where Areva's mineworkers live in Niger. In Niger, miners build their homes of radioactive materials from the mines, just as Navajos once did.
During a three-day tour of indigenous advocates in Washington DC, hosted by Beyond Nuclear, human rights abuses were exposed, revealing that globally uranium mining targets Indigenous Peoples.
Manuel Pino of the Acoma Pueblo in New Mexico talked about the genocide that has already happened to southwestern Native Americans who have suffered the vast majority of uranium mines on their land, most never cleaned up.

Yaqui ceremonial leader Jose Matus, director of the Indigenous Alliance without Borders, talks about the Indigenous rights of mobility and Yaqui villages in Sonora, Mexico. Matus said Indigenous on the border are concerned that conditions under Obama remain "status quo" with the Bush regime. As requested by Yaqui elders to maintain ceremonies, for 30 years Matus has brought Yaqui ceremonial leaders across the border for temporary visits to conduct annual ceremonies. Navajo Nation's Hidden Danger Still Hidden: Coal-fired power plant, ash ponds

There's a new report on the hidden dangers of toxic ash ponds from coal-fired power plants. The ponds in the image are west of the Four Corner's power plant near Farmington, N.M., and are not on the new interactive map in the report. The image is from Google. Navajos living in the area are fighting a third power plant, Desert Rock, which would bring more disease and environmental damage. Desert Rock has been pushed by Navajo President Joe Shirley, Jr., and the Navajo Nation Council. The elected leaders receive the majority of their salaries and expenses from fossil fuel revenues. -- Censored News

The legislature adopts the renewable energy standard and tariff rules approved by the Arizona corporation commission in decision number 69127 that is effective on the effective date of this chapter, except that eligible renewable energy resources include nuclear energy, hydro generation and energy saved through conservation and energy efficiency."
We'll be lobbying, but any strategic suggestions from the South Carolina victory last year are welcome!
