The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists set the Doomsday Clock to 100 minutes to midnight. To those of you who have confirmed and those of you who may still opt to testify at the New York City Council Hearing on Resolution 976 and Introduction 1621 on Tuesday, January 28 at 1 p.m, thank you all! It promises to be a historic day, bringing together many of us who have been working on disarmament for years, even decades, and some of us who are new to the issue. We have assembled a wide array of stakeholders from the Indigenous Community, the Financial Sector, NYC Municipal Workers & Pensioners, the Military Community, the Labor Community, Hibakusha/Downwinders, the Ecumenical Community, the Scientific Community, the Climate and Environmental Community, the Healthcare and Medical Community, the Legal Community, Academics, the Arts Community, Student Voices and representatives of NGOs and the general public. We have 44 confirmed speakers.
We are presently working with Council Member Dromm’s office to arrange for us to speak in clusters. Each of us has a very brief 2 minutes. Several of you have asked to speak early in the hearings, and we will try our best to help facilitate that. As a rule hearings are public, and the line-up of speakers is on a first come/first served basis.
We will be holding a press conference on the steps of City Hall at noon featuring Ray Acheson of ICAN, Zia Mian of Princeton University, Robert Croonquist from NYCAN, and Lead Sponsor of the legislation CM Daniel Dromm. The press conference will be facilitated by Kathleen Sullivan of Hibakusha Stories. We want a strong presence and will provide posters and banners. We encourage everyone to be there. Please post and share our Facebook Event page throughout social media.
