Court Support Needed -- Defend Lakota Elder Joe Lafferty, in Pierre, South Dakota

This case will set a precedence across Oceti Sakowin on Tribal Councils ability to prosecute dissent in federal court to avoid transparency. Joe is being unjustly prosecuted for speaking up about long-term corruption happening within the Cheyenne River Sioux/Lakota Tribe. These charges are being pursued in federal court before ever being mediated in Tribal Court. Many elders and tribal members across Oceti Sakowin nation/reservations and beyond have been advocating for these charges against Lafferty to be dropped.

By Grassroots Lakota Oyate, Censored News, Jan. 12, 2026

Joe Lafferty is a Traditional Lakota elder who has advocated for the people and Indigenous Rights for many decades, including at the United Nations Worlds General Assembly in 1977. Many elders have voiced to Council their homes are in unlivable conditions citing leaks and basement sewer problems for months with no help.

The secretive ICE deportation flights are in this tangled web of heartbreak and misery.

While ICE is terrorizing the nation, Navajo President Buu Nygren, playing politics, says there are no funds for tribal IDs. At the same time, ICE is out-of-control and making violent arrests in Minneapolis. Several Native American governments are profiteering from this misery and being exposed by tribal members. Meanwhile, the secretive deportation flights continue, and Guantanamo is one of the destinations.

Cheyenne River Sioux Chairman Ryman LeBeau's Statement
January 11, 2026

In light of the ongoing violence, we have witnessed in Minneapolis and across the country, never forget that we were here first, we are the first nations, and no one should be forced to live in fear. Now is the time to come together in unity. We are committed to ensuring that all Tribal members have Tribal IDs and are protected.

The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe is a sovereign Tribal nation. Due to recent wrongful detainment and racial profiling actions occurring throughout the country and to promote the general welfare of its people the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe (CRST) stands to protect its Tribal members and its sovereign Tribal Nation homelands from any threats; both domestic and foreign. The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe condemns the recent actions of the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the detainment of 4 Oglala Sioux Tribal members, and of Red Lake Nation descendant Jose Roberto Ramirez in Minneapolis, MN; and condemns any violence caused by their lack of competency of Constitutional Rights and the inherent sovereignty of Tribal Nations.

To ensure proper identification, all Tribal members should verify their Tribal Identification (ID) Card is valid and not expired. All off-reservation Tribal members are advised to obtain a Tribal ID Card if they do not currently possess one. All fees will be waived for enrolled Tribal members. https://www.cheyenneriversioux.com/

ICE is terrorizing Native Americans. A Navajo on his way to work in the Phoenix Valley was grabbed by ICE on Monday. A Pascua Yaqui tribal member grabbed near Tohono O'odham's San Xavier District, bordering Tucson, reveals how federal agents are terrorizing U.S. citizens and migrants in detention. In Oklahoma, Absentee Shawnee are now being harassed and detained by ICE agents.

In Minneapolis, protests continue at Fort Snelling, where Native Americans illegally arrested have been taken. Outside the Whipple building federal agents are firing tear gas and pepper balls as the protests continue.

Fort Snelling is the site of the removal and genocide of Dakota people.

MINNEAPOLIS -- ICE's violence continued on Wednesday night with another ICE shooting. Three Lakotas arrested by ICE remain disappeared at Fort Snelling, the long time site of the genocide of Dakota people.

In the search for the three disappeared Lakotas, Oglala Lakota President Frank Star Comes Out says he refuses to cut a deal with ICE, which ICE is demanding to release more information.

Meanwhile, a whistleblower has leaked the secret ICE operations underway -- including the targeting of activists, recruiting informants in jail, and 'Operation A' exploiting migrants for intelligence.

After the World Youth and Student Gathering in Caracas in August 2005, on my first trip to Venezuela, it led to the heating oil to tribes and poor people in December 2005.

Shortly afterward, Caracas hosted the World Social Forum in January 2006. This would be my second trip to Caracas. I tried to get a delegation of indigenous people from the north continent to establish

friendship and cultural exchanges and to share our struggles before the World Social Forum. After approaching indigenous organizations ( IITC, AIM, IEN, etc), tribes, all seemed focused on other things or with no resources and declined to join. But I was determined to make this gathering. My interest in the social system of the country under President Hugo Chavez was growing deeper. President Hugo Chavez had re-directed oil wealth from a few hands and pockets, to addressing the needs of the people. I had to see how it was being implemented.
