Women Leaders for Climate Change Justice and Solutions to Speak Out During WECAN United Nations COP23 Events

SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA, Calif. (October 23, 2017) - As governments from around the world convene in Bonn, Germany this November for continued work towards implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) COP23 - women from around the world will advocate in diverse events to call for justice and action, and to highlight the vital role of women in the planning and implementation of urgent climate change solutions.
The Women's Earth and Climate Action Network (WECAN) International will hold a public forum in downtown Bonn, as well as an event and press conference inside of UNFCCC COP23 venue - uniting with global allies in strategic advocacy to ensure that the voices of frontline, grassroots, Indigenous and other most-impacted women are heard alongside policy-makers and international advocates as escalating environmental and social destruction continues in their communities and homelands and places around the world.
Media and press are invited to join WECAN International at all events - as diverse global leaders share their stories, analysisand demands for effective climate change action which respects human rights, women's rights, Indigenous rights and rights of nature. Full events schedule available here.
On November 13th from 13:00 - 18:00, WECAN International will present a free, public forum - 'Women Leading Solutions on the Frontlines of Climate Change - Bonn' at the Ameron Hotel Königshof (Adenauerallee 9, 53111 Bonn). An extraordinary group of over 20 global women leaders will address environmental and social injustice, draw attention to root causes of the climate crisis, and explore the array of manners in which they are working to shape a healthy and equitable world.
Speakers include Her Excellency President Hilda Heine (President of the Republic of the Marshall Islands); Noelene Nabulivou (DIVA for Equality; Pacific Partnerships on Gender, Climate Change and Sustainable Development, Fiji; Pacific Islands Climate Action Network, Fiji);Kathy Jetnil-Kijiner (Climate Change Activist and Poet, Marshall Islands); Patricia Gualinga (Indigenous Kichwa leader from the Pueblo of Sarayaku, Ecuador); Ruth Nyambura (African Eco-Feminists Collective, Kenya); Sônia Guajajara (Guajajara/Tentehar Indigenous leader, National Coordinator of Brazil's Association of Indigenous Peoples, Brazil); Dorothee Häussermann (Representative of the Ende Gelende Movement, Germany); and many more outstanding women climate leaders from around the world. This event is free and open to the public, no UN accreditation is required.
During the event, WECAN International will also share the 'Women Speak: Stories, Case Studies And Solutions From The Frontlines Of Climate Change' research and storytelling-database and initiative.
On November 15th, the Women's Earth and Climate Action Network will present a 'Women for Climate Justice Leading Solutions on the Frontlines of Climate Change' formal UNFCCC COP23 side event from 11:30-13:00 in BONN Zone Meeting Room 12 (150) - followed by a press conference from 15:30 - 16:00 in Press Conference Room 2 Theatre, BULA Zone 3. During the side event and press conference - grassroots and Indigenous women leaders will address climate solutions from a climate justice framework, and share strategies and calls to action for forest and biodiversity protection, a just transition to 100% renewable energy, agro-ecology implementation, fossil fuel resistance movements, and much more.
