In her influential book, Nānā i ke Kumu, preeminent 20th century Native Hawaiian scholar Mary Kawena Pukui wrote: “Members of the ʻohana, like taro shoots, are all from the same root. With Hawaiians, family consciousness of the same ʻroot of origin’ was a deeply felt, unifying force, no matter how many offshoots came from offshoots.”

Blood quantum emerged as a way to measure ʻIndian-ness’ through a construct of race. So that over time, Indians would literally breed themselves out and rid the federal government of their legal duties to uphold treaty obligations,” explained Dr. Elizabeth Rule (Chickasaw) an assistant professor at American University in a 2018 NPR interview.

On Saturday, May 16th, about sixty people including White Mesa Ute Community members of the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, Navajo people, and supporters gathered at La Sal Junction to raise public awareness and to protest against Energy Fuels Resources' uranium mines at La Sal and the disposal of uranium ore at the company's "mill" located south of Blanding, Utah, next to the White Mesa Ute Community.

Ute Elders offered a prayer and spoke about the importance of protecting their community, Osacred places, and everyone's environment from the radiation threat posed by Energy Fuels' operations. Tribal members expressed strong opposition to the Energy Fuels mill turning into an international radioactive waste facility. 

Participants also expressed solidarity with the Havasupai Tribe fighting to close Energy Fuels' Pinyon Plain uranium mine near the Grand Canyon.

In addition to concerned local residents, groups that participated in the event were the White Mesa Concerned Community, Greenaction for Health and Environmental Justice, Uranium Watch, Moab Mutual Aid, Utah Sierra Club, and Northern Arizona American Indian Movement.

The White Mesa Concerned Community grassroots group extended an invitation to the public to join them on Saturday, October 17th for their 10th Annual White Mesa Spiritual Walk and Protest against Energy Fuels.

Hello Friends:

June has arrived and so has the first wave of ripe raspberries in the Beech House garden in northeast Portland. Which always prompts me to recall...

Some 13 years ago, my fellow farmworker Anna and I were on our own for lunch. Anna was a college student who was visiting from central France. I agreed to make a salad to accompany our omelets. Anna gathered some farm-fresh eggs while I gathered some salad greens from the garden along with scallions and a bowl of raspberries. Back in the kitchen, I doled out an ample measure of raspberries in a smaller bowl, dripped in a little olive oil, and mixed until the ripe raspberries dissolved to form a base for the dressing. I then dribbled in some honey to enhance the sweetness, adding a pinch of salt and a pinch of cajon spices to counter the sugars ever so slightly. After preparing a salad from the lettuce greens, chopped scallions, and chopped store-bought avocados, I poured on the dressing and tossed. Anna was very impressed. But where did you learn to make this dressing? I just made it up, I confessed; I never ever made it before. Amazing, said Anna, laughing and adding: But this is so French, it is called salade sucree-salee, salad sweetened and salted. Well, le voila. There you have it. The garden spirits were paying friendly attention to the world around them and lending inspiration.

The United States government is dynamiting the sacred place of Kumeyaay, who live on both sides of the border, and blasted two sacred monoliths that were 60 to 120 million years old southeast of San Diego, California. The U.S. began blasting Cerro Cuchumá in early April, a historic and sacred site where Kumeyaay medicine people carry out ceremonies. The blasting was done without consultation as required by U.S. federal law.

A uranium ore haul truck traveling from a uranium mine in the Havasupai's homeland in the Grand Canyon, to a mill site in the White Mesa Ute's community in Utah, was struck by a vehicle in the northwestern Navajo Nation on May 6, 2026. The collision  exposes the danger from the radioactive haul trucks covered only with tarps.

The trucks travel from Energy Fuels Pinyon Plain uranium mine in the Grand Canyon in Havasupai ancestral land, through Flagstaff, and across Navajo and Hopi lands before reaching Energy Fuels mill site on Ute ancestral land in southeastern Utah.

Construction crews in Arizona who are building President Trump’s expanded border wall have razed a portion of a Native American archeological site in the Sonoran Desert estimated to be at least 1,000 years old. Aerial photos reveal that bulldozers caused extensive damage to a 280-by-50-foot etching in the desert sand known as an intaglio, which holds special significance for the Hia-Ced O’odham people.

Lorraine Marquez Eiler, co-founder of the International Sonoran Desert Alliance and an elder of the Hia-Ced O’odham, says locals informed both the work crews and Border Patrol officials about the significance of the intaglio. “On Thursday, late afternoon, they were still talking about how to protect the area and went home feeling that they were still working together. On Friday, for whatever reason, the contractors bulldozed the area,” says Marquez Eiler.

Dine' (Navajo) Jean Whitehorse told the U.N. Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues today that she was a victim of the U.S. sterilization program, denying her the right to have more children. Whitehorse said she is a survivor of the boarding school and relocation systems of the colonized U.S. government. At Gallup Indian Medical Center in New Mexico in 1972 she was sterilized without her consent by an Indian Health Service doctor. "I wanted more children," Whitehorse told the U.N.  Describing the impact on the culture and future of the Dine' people, Whitehorse said, "There is no Navajo term for sterilization. In our culture, true wealth is our children. They are the Guardians of our Heritage." Whitehorse said the sterilizations by U.S. doctors is not only an individual loss, but the loss of generations. She said it is a violation of international rights. Speaking as a representative of AIM West, Whitehorse points out Indigenous women have been sterilized in countries from Canada to South America and their struggle for justice continues.

Breaking News -- During this morning's session of the U.N. Permanent Forum, an Indigenous representative responded to the International Fund of Russia's representative who called the majority of Russia's Indigenous Peoples "mentally ill." She said this not only insulted Indigenous people as inferior, but it is "psychological violence," which creates collective trauma and discredits entire cultures. She said this man has been turning the protection of human rights into money making by way of NGOs and personal businesses, and the money is being stolen through schemes. She said he is being prosecuted for the theft of funds for elderly and others in need. "This person is guilty of economic crimes." She points out that this man is a former expert of the U.N. Permanent Forum.

Today, we continue our struggle to save Oak Flat. Through all our past visits to court, we have learned the reach of capitalism and its influence on the efforts to save the earth from destruction for profit, has reached the worry of our judges, who are the ultimate influencers of fair laws for all people and for the earth itself.

We, thank all those who have supported us to save Oak Flat. This struggle touches you and everyone with issues that go beyond just religion. Resolution Copper and the U.S. government have pushed making money and have influenced all to believe they are working in the best interests of all U.S. citizens. It began with efforts to bypass U.S. laws using the plenary powers of the senate, discounting U.S. treaty obligations, devaluing copper on exchange value and pushing all to believe the destruction of Oak Flat was because of an urgent need of American people. These actions validated that you could write anything on a piece of paper as long as you can keep it still. Today, on Earth Day, we pray the District Court will hear our case to right this wrong.

Thank you to all Apache people, all tribes, all religions, and all faith leaders who support Native American religious rights, all organizations including the National Congress of American Indians, the Intertribal Association of Arizona, the Advisory Council of Historic Preservation, all the supporting labor unions and indigenous groups, etc., those who are on the right side of justice.

We ask all to light a candle in prayer for this court case filed today. On Earth Day, although every second of all our days rely on Mother Earth daily for our existence.

WASHINGTON – A coalition of Western Apaches, other Native peoples, and non-Native allies filed an updated lawsuit in federal district court today seeking to halt the planned destruction of Oak Flat, an invaluable Native American sacred site, by a Chinese-owned mining giant.

In Apache Stronghold v. United States, Apache Stronghold is challenging the government’s recent decision to give Oak Flat to Resolution Copper, a Chinese-owned mining company that plans to turn the site into a massive two-mile-wide, 1,100-foot-deep crater that would end essential Apache religious practices forever. “We will never stop fighting,” said Dr. Wendsler Nosie Sr. of Apache Stronghold. “This is a struggle for the soul of our people. Oak Flat is where generations of Native peoples have come to connect with the Creator and Mother Earth. We pray the court reverses this illegal land grab so we can continue those time-honored traditions.”

Robert was on the Trail of Broken Treaties, at the takeover of the BIA building in Washington, and at the Occupation of Wounded Knee. At the Occupation of Alcatraz, Robert's teepee was a monument to the struggle. Robert said, "In the early days the Sierra Club and environmental organizations didn't want input from Indigenous Peoples, in regards to national parks and monuments." Today, this is changing.

During Bioneers annual conference in Berkeley, Indigenous youths shared their struggles, from the Eastern Cherokee to the Klamath on the west coast, to Hawaii, as Native youths reclaim their waters and rivers, and rise to defend the natural world.

But we will never stop fighting to protect Oak Flat and each place that is sacred to our people. And we are still fighting—in the courts, in Congress, and, most importantly, spiritually.
