TURTLE MOUNTAIN, North Dakota -- From boarding school to the fishing rights struggle in the Northwest, to the Trail of Broken Treaties and Wounded Knee, Leonard Peltier fought the good fight, and after 49 years and two months in prison, it brought him home again.

Speaking with Amy Goodman at Democracy Now! from his home on Turtle Mountain, Peltier shares the reality of being in prison. Even before his long imprisonment, the battle for justice propelled him forward.

Peltier thought he would die in prison.

Recounting his life, Peltier remembers the starvation in his homeland as the U.S. attempted termination and the threat of death by the U.S. military for those at Wounded Knee. Peltier remembers being arrested with Marlon Brando, the injustice that imprisoned him, and his life and his struggles today.

Amy Goodman speaks with Leonard Peltier at his home on Turtle Mountain, on the day after his 81st birthday. Remembering the brutality of boarding school, Peltier says, the purpose of boarding schools is "to take the Indian out of the Indians." The danger continues, Peltier adds. "Look at what they’re doing in Palestine, killing women, children, babies, unborn babies. That’s what they did to us, man. And here it is still happening."

During a day of revealing the genocide and slavery that the United States government is founded on, those gathered at the National Day of Mourning at Plymouth Rock urged release of Leonard Peltier, America's longest incarcerated political prisoner.

The 38^th Annual Day of Solidarity with Indigenous Peoples, organized in Paris by the French Committee for Solidarity with Indians of the Americas, CSIA, celebrated over five centuries of struggles against colonialism, the 50^th Anniversary of the AIM and the 40^th Anniversary of the CSIA.

Jean Roach was one of the speakers representing AIM. She talked about the role of women in the struggle, Wounded Knee, the Protection of Water and Earth, and called for Leonard Peltier's release from prison.

Below is the transcript of the speech she delivered on October 13^th, 2018.

"My name is Jean Roach, I am from the Lakota Nation. I live near the Black Hills, in South Dakota. I'd like to thank everybody for coming and be interested in our fights.

I represent a man, Leonard Peltier, who has been in prison for 43 years, also a part of the colonization process.

When our families are being attacked, whether it was in the 1700's or in the 1970's, the women have to take a stand too. Our children have been adopted out and taken to boarding schools, being killed, murdered. Our men have been taken to prison, or killed, or both. Since the first contact, we have had many casualties.

My Nation is the Miniconjou. My people were massacred at Wounded Knee [December 29^th 1890]. Part of the role of the women… So, people try to call us activists or militants, but we are just mothers and grandmothers. We protect our next generations, those are our actions right now, and we probably carry the DNA of our ancestors that were murdered. So, when we talk about Leonard Peltier, we should relate to the fact that his grandfather was one of the Dakota 38 [38 men hanged on Lincoln orders in Mankato, Minnesota, on December 26^th, 1862]. To our generations, Leonard represents the United States manipulations.

Some people call them political prisoners, but we are just all Water Protectors. At Standing Rock, they were attacked based on their beliefs, our beliefs of protection of the water. And they are political prisoners too.

Leonard Peltier has been a prisoner, as I said, for 43 years. He is the longest held political prisoner in the world. All we are asking for is justice. And the story should be told and not forgotten. We would like the international world to know that we suffer and we still have a prisoner inside the prison. And many more. Until he's free, our Nations are not free.

I have a lot of documentation, on this I am talking about. I urge everybody to take interest in Leonard Peltier. And I congratulate all the water protectors and Earth protectors. Thank you."

Visiting Grandpa, Leonard Peltier, in Prison

I want to thank you all for making this wonderful trip possible, Last Friday I flew from Fargo to Orlando to visit Uncle. I met Waha family in Orlando and we drove to Coleman to get ready for our visit on Saturday. On Saturday we were at the prison bright and early 7:30 a.m., signed in and were told that the girls were dressed wrong for the visit. So off we went to Walmart and had to buy new shirts and closed toed shoes! Amazing what the guards find to pick at to slow down our visit. It was almost 10:30 by the time we got to the visiting room and then had to wait another half-hour for then to bring Leonard. Leonard was so happy to see his daughter in law Emily and his sweet granddaughters. Kobe, Kadeem and Kaleigha. The girls were a bit shy the first day but the second day they were excited and asked their grandpa many questions and he loved answering them. He is always telling stories of the past, and his past as a young man. He also told them about the struggles of his grandparents and great grandparents and how strong they were to survive so much racism and abuse from people in the near-by towns as well as the BIA agents who ran the reservations in the 30’s and 40’s. We also talked about my position as the Art Director as I will be staying in Fargo as the main office goes to Florida. Sadly, he can’t paint right now because he is recovering and he is unable to lift his hands in the painting position. He is worried that he will be unable to donate paintings to the committee. I would really like everyone to take a look at the paintings that are available on our website and see what you can afford. These paintings are the basis for our fundraising for his legal team. And I am concerned that without your generous donations we will be unable to raise the necessary funds that the lawyers are requesting. Given his health I am concerned that this heart surgery has shortened his life and we need to get him released as soon as possible. On Sunday we talked about his health, he is still recovering from his heart surgery, and yet they have moved him from the handicapped cell into a make believe elder unit where he is in a double bunked cell. Thank goodness he has the bottom bunk, but his cellie, who has the top bunk is in his late 60’ has a hard time getting to his top bunk. How can this be an ELDER UNIT with these conditions for older and sick inmates. These conditions need to be addressed because Leonard is 73 and had major surgery. We, as free people, are able to go home and rest, go to the doctor whenever we feel ill, and usually have someone to nurse us back to health. But Uncle doesn’t have that luxury. all, we had a great visit for about 4 hours and then around 2:00 pm the guards rushed us all out as there was an incident in the yard, and immediately ended visiting. Leonard wants me to be sure and thank all the supporters for their help in making this visit possible and give a shout out to the Rosenberg Fund for Children for their support! For all our friends in New York, the New York Support Committee is having an event tomorrow. And you can find the information on our website under News. We hope you can attend as all fundraising is important at this time to help build Leonard’s new legal team. We hope to have the new office in Florida open by early November and look forward to sharing that information with you. Leonard is very excited about the ILPDC coming there, as it will remove his stress at being so far from his committee. Leonard replied, "O My God, please send my condolences, her grandchildren also? Wow what a huge loss, see what we can contribute to the wake. Let people know she was a descendant of the 1890 Wounded Knee Massacre and survivor of the 1973 Wounded Knee Resistance. She, along with others, were offered bribes by the FBI to turn snitch and traitor against the Oglala Nation and when this didn't work with the Strong Hearted Women, they tried to threaten their families lives and freedom. These are my True Real Heroes. Please ask our supporters to help with their funeral expenses as if it were my funeral. What a loss, I am so saddened that I can't be there to stand with her family as she and the little ones are laid to rest." Leonard Peltier to be honored with Frantz Fanon Award for Revolutionary Thinking

PARIS -- The Frantz Fanon Foundation is awarding the Frantz Fanon Prize to Leonard Peltier. The prize, which honors revolutionary thinkers and their service to mankind, will be presented to Lenny Foster, Diné, a member of the American Indian Movement, and an advisor to Peltier. Foster will accept the award on behalf of Peltier, who remains incarcerated in the United States.

The award will be presented by Frantz Fanon’s daughter on March 6, 2016.

The prize was awarded to Peltier based on a proposal from the network, Reseau ‘Sortir du Colonialisme.' The Support Committee for American Indians, CSIA, worked in support of the proposal to recognize Peltier with the award.

Peltier's supporters, pressing for clemency for Peltier, hope the prize will attract the attention of President Obama. Earlier, Obama voiced his admiration for Fanon.

Frantz Fanon, a revolutionary thinker from Martinique, was a psychiatrist and worked in a hospital in Algiers during the Algerian Uprising (1954-1962.) He sided with the Algerians. Fanon's most famous book is ‘The Wretched of the Earth’. He died very young of leukemia before the end of the Algerian War, in 1961. He has always been a major symbol of anti-colonialism and resistance of Indigenous People.
