SAN FRANCISCO -- "I grew up on the land," says Sarah James, Neets’aii Gwich’in. It was fifteen miles from the nearest neighbor.

"I spoke only Gwich'in until I was thirteen years old, when I went to school."

"At that time there was no running water, there is no running water, just healthy running water, it's a river. There are no roads into Arctic Village, we hunt, trap, fish and gather, together."

NEW YORK -- It is the sacred place where life begins, and now the U.S. has opened it to leasing for oil and gas drilling, Quannah Chasing Horse of the Gwich'in Steering Committee, told the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.

As matriarchs, Indigenous women play an essential role in the community, and are the life-givers and defenders of the earth.

We wish to invite you to the Biennial Gwich'in Gathering in Vashraii K'oo (Arctic Village, Alaska) from July 25-29, 2016.  The Arctic Village Council is hosting the event.

Join us!  This year is an urgent time in our fight for permanent protection of the sacred birthplace of the caribou in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in this era of record global warming and climate change.  We will celebrate and thank President Obama for sending the first-ever proposed Arctic Refuge Wilderness recommendation to Congress.  This year is the key time to move permanent protection –Wilderness– forward.
