HERMOSILLO, Sonora, Mexico -- Professor Alejandro Aguilar Zeleny describes the gathering held in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, Oct. 26-27, 2012. Guarijilos, O'odham, Yaqui, Comca'ac, Kickapoo, Mayo and Los Pimas, are struggling against theft of water, land and forests. Alejandro summarizes the two day gathering.
Alejandro describes how Indigenous leaders gathered to discuss ways to keep the traditions, language and culture alive, while sharing with others their purpose to focus on the spiritual, rather than the material world.
Mining is devastating Indigenous lands in Sonora, Mexico, including the O'odham ceremonial community of Quitovac, near the Arizona border.
The Los Pimas in southern Sonora are battling the destruction of their forests, which are being destroyed for charcoal for the US. The charcoal industry underpays Indian workers, with laborers paid only 50 cents to lift the heavy bags. The burn holes in the ground lead to injuries of children.
Indigenous gathered at the reunion included the Yoeme (Yaqui) land, the people are fighting the theft of their water from the Rio Yaqui by the city of Hermosillo.
Meanwhile, Guarijios battle a dam that could lead to relocation.
