Havasupai Rally on World Water Day: Protecting Sacred Water from Uranium Mining

HAVASUPAI -- Havasupai reaffirms commitment to protect sacred homelands from destructive uranium mining with prayer and rally on Friday, March 22, 2024. Haul No! volunteer Xipe Rivera delivers critical updates and unwavered support from Haul No!
On World Water Day, I had the opportunity to visit the Havasupai Tribal Lands as a representative of #HaulNo! and join the Tribal Leaders, the Children and the Elders in prayer and rally against the Pinyon Plain Uranium Mine.
The village is tucked deep in the Grand Canyon and is not accessible by road - you must hike in or be flown in by helicopter. This was a profound experience. A soft and fierce reminder. An affirmation of why it is we do what we do.
For the Havasupai, for the Canyon and ALL its inhabitants this water is sacred. Their existence is intertwined and they depend on one another. No amount of profit or fuel or energy in the form of uranium or any other mineral should be worth these sacred lives and the uranium mine that sits next to Red Butte poses an imminent threat the aquifer that feeds these springs.
Any form of contamination due to mineral extraction would be IRREVERSIBLE. In attendance supporting the Havasupai Indigenous Nation were Center For Biological Diversity, Sierra Club, the National Parks Conservation Association, Grand Canyon Trust, and The Yoties!Photos by Xipe R.
