Deadly Coal Mining is a Photo-Op for Navajo President and the Media is Part of the Game

Deadly Coal Mining is a Photo-Op for the Navajo President, and the Media is Part of the Game.

By Brenda Norrell, Censored News, April 12, 2025

The media covered up the true history of coal mining on Black Mesa. Now, Navajo President Buu Nygren is pushing and celebrating coal mining, and was in D.C. for photo ops doing it.

Peabody Coal didn't just dig up coal on Black Mesa -- they dug up Dine' from their burial places, and Dine' were put in museums. Dine' graves were dug up for 16 years. Dine' cultural items were looted by a team from Prescott College, and millions of items were taken to Southern Illinois University.

The Navajo government granted Peabody Coal its lease and knew about the robbing of graves of Dine' at the time.
It is a dark chapter in history, and the Navajo President now glosses over this cruel and toxic history with his PR spin and photos in self-promotion in DC.

The Deadly Toxic Plume

The toxic plume from the Four Corners power plant was so deadly, that it was one of the few sites visible from space. The coal mine and power plant poisoned the land, water and air on the Navajo Nation between Shiprock and Bloomfield, NM, and the region.

Now, the Navajo President poses for photo ops in D.C. pushing coal mining and  ignoring the vile history. The media is part of this sinister cheerleading for coal mining.

The deadly air, and toxic dumping, around Bloomfield, N.M. -- from the Four Corners and San Juan coal mines and power plants -- means asthma, respiratory disease and cancer.

While I was a staff reporter at Indian Country Today, the facts were censored by the editors, after the newspaper was sold to the new owners in New York. They censored the devastation from the oil and gas wells around the Dine' place of origin Dinetah near Bloomfield.

Fake Green Energy Transition in the Bordertown Continues Devastation

The devastation continues with the fake green energy transition based in the Navajo  bordertown of Farmington, New Mexico.

The CEO of the Navajo Nation enterprise, Navajo Energy Transition Company, was hired by an Australian company to mine for lithium at the Hualapai's ceremonial spring in Arizona. The Navajo Nation's tribal enterprise already owns and operates coal mines in Wyoming and Montana.

The fake green energy boom in Farmington included Interior Sec. Deb Haaland announcing that the atomic bomb industry, Los Alamos National Laboratory, would lead the so-called new "energy transition."

Haaland didn't point out that Los Alamos National Laboratory is in the heart of the Pueblos in Northern New Mexico and has already poisoned the land, water and air with atomic bomb testing and storage.

Haaland promoted the atomic bomb industry in this region already strewn with the radioactive waste that the U.S. never cleaned up from Cold War uranium mining. Navajos were sent to their deaths mining uranium without protective clothing, even after the U.S. knew that the radioactivity would kill them.

U.S. EPA Hype: Radioactive Waste Never Cleaned Up

The media fuels this devastation by publishing the hype of the U.S. EPA and its press releases. The U.S. EPA doesn't actually clean up any of the strewn radioactive waste on the Navajo Nation from uranium mines, it just announces plans to do it.

Eric Jantz, legal director of the New Mexico Environmental Law Center, testified before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.

Jantz testified that there are 524 uranium mine sites waiting to be cleaned up on the Navajo Nation. So far, zero of these have been fully cleaned up.

Navajo President's Secret Agreement for Radioactive Trucks

The Navajo President's promotion of coal mining in D.C. comes after his secret agreement with Energy Fuels to allow uranium ore transport across the Navajo Nation. The Navajo Nation Council was never consulted, and never agreed to it. The trucks, covered only with tarps, now endanger everyone in the region -- Havasupai, Paiute, Dine', Hopi, Ute, and the community of Flagstaff. The uranium mill and dump is in the White Mesa Ute community in southeastern Utah.

Energy Fuels is now mining uranium in the Grand Canyon, endangering the Havasupai aquifer, and spewing radioactive dust, with no warning to Grand Canyon visitors.
