Interior Sec. Deb Haaland spoke about protecting the planet at the Democratic National Convention -- apparently forgetting her support for lithium mining into the Paiute Massacre Site Peehee Mu'huh in Nevada, and the fact that she is being sued by three Native American Tribes in Arizona for destroying the sacred.

“Let me go back to a lesson I learned in the deserts of the Southwest. We all have a role in protecting our earth for future generations," Haaland, Laguna Pueblo, told the DNC on Thursday.

SAN PEDRO VALLEY, Arizona -- Deb Haaland doesn't care about the yellow-billed cuckoo. She doesn't care about the migratory birds traveling north who enjoy the water and trees here. Haaland doesn't care that the bulldozers for SunZia's transmission line, taking wind energy to California, are destroying an ancient village site of the ancestors of San Xavier O'odham.

The federal court failed to stop her, so Tohono O'odham and San Carlos Apache Nations appealed to Haaland, Laguna Pueblo, in a letter on Monday.

Today, I came across this censored article that I wrote as a staff writer for Indian Country Today 15 years ago. It was good to read the words again of Ola Cassadore Davis, San Carlos Apache, who passed to the Spirit World.
Perhaps Arizona Rep. Rick Renzi should have listened to the Apache elders when they warned him about violating what is sacred. 
Renzi was eventually sentenced to three years in prison because of his land scam involving copper mining, in which he sought to personally benefit. Renzi served two years in prison.
I always wonder, when I read these censored articles, what a difference in history these words might have made, if they had not been censored by Indian Country Today. 

After I was censored for years, and terminated with no cause given, I published this article below in 2006, on a free website that led to Censored News as it is today.
In the late 1990s, Indian Country Today was sold by Lakota publisher Tim Giago to the Oneida Nation in New York.

There was a series of non-Indian editors, and many vital articles were censored. Specifically I was told verbally and in writing to stop writing about "grassroots" Native people. Many staff reporters, including myself, were forced into enormous debt because of expenses. Another reporter sued over this and received a settlement.

To the public, to the people, it was another kind of debt, the truth was stolen and it is owed to them. Today the newspaper is owned by the National Congress of American Indians. Time will tell if it lives up to its responsibility for truth telling and avoids the popular plagiarism of stay-at-home writers, profiteering from the hard work of journalists.

Before the newspaper was sold, during the 1990s, while publisher Tim Giago owned it, we were able to cover news in a way it was never covered. I was able to join the Zapatistas in the jungle in the beginning of the movement and be present at Big Mountain, San Carlos Apache Nation and across the west.
During those years, I talked with great icons like Buffy Sainte Marie, Russell Means, Floyd Westerman, John Trudell, Thomas Banyacya, Dan Evehema, Hopi elder who was 107, and more elders now in the Spirit World.

When Indian Country Today began in the mid 1990s, we had incredible editors, including Avis Little Eagle , now publisher of Teton Times in Standing Rock, and Monte Ecoffey of Wounded Knee, who died too young. The great photographer Larry Gus, Hopi, was also on staff in the Southwest office. Larry joined the Indigenous delegation to Chiapas, and that is how we met our lifelong friends, including Jose Matus, Yaqui Ceremonial Leader, who later passed to the Spirit World.
The newspaper fired me the day before the Indigenous Peoples Border Summit in 2006, as I got off the plane for it. I covered it anyway.

The Mohawks came from the north in 2006, and again for the border summit in 2007.
When the Mohawks saw the US Border Patrol on the Tohono O'odham Nation, arresting Indigenous women and children, the Mohawks sprang out of their cars without a moment's hesitation, and ran to their rescue.
The US Border Patrol forced the migrants into the back of the truck, as if they were cattle, and sped away. These pitiful tiny people, women and children, appeared to have walked from Guatemala.
That day I learned how Mohawks respond to this horrible abuse of human life and human dignity at the border.

That day we also saw the chained link fence cage where migrants were held by the US Border Patrol, on the sovereign Tohono O'odham Nation, outside in life threatening heat. 
Lenny Foster, Dine', called it nothing more than a "dog's cage." Next to the cage, south of Sells, was a US spy tower, in 2007, on the Tohono O'odham Nation.
Mohawks asked how the Tohono O'odham Nation could permit this to happen on their land.

Today, the US Border Patrol agents continue their abuse and assaults on both O'odham and migrants. Many migrants are Indigenous people and have walked across countries in their desperation to survive.
During this time of censorship, when US bombs fell on Baghdad, Louise Benally of Big Mountain compared the US oppression to when Dine' were forced on the cruel Longest Walk and their imprisonment at Bosque Redondo, New Mexico. Dine' suffered from starvation and many died along the way and at the barren prison 

Louise was censored by Indian Country Today, as was Bahe Katennay of Big Mountain when he spoke of oil and gas drilling in Dinetah, the Place of Origin. Lenny Foster, Dine', was censored when he described the treatment of Leonard Peltier in prison.
During these years, truth had a friend reporting at the Hague. Paul Rafferty published these censored articles in his UN Report. Paul was among the first to publish the photos of US soldiers torturing prisoners at Abu Ghraib.
While Congressman Renzi went to prison, others did not. Those responsible for desecrating Mount Graham with telescopes included the University of Arizona in Tucson and the Pope, who led the push for this desecration.

Today, San Carlos Apaches continue to battle mining, desecration at Oak Flat, and continue to protect their land and water.
Today, to the south at the border, dozens of federal laws have been waived, as Trump begins the destruction of the fragile Sonoran Desert for his border wall, which will destroy the habitat of all living things, bulldoze Native American graves, and create a no-man's corridor -- of land seized from the poor -- for the private corporations who fund politicians.

SAFFORD, Ariz. – San Carlos Apache protested outside a Congressional field hearing and accused Congressman Rick Renzi, R-Ariz., of attempting to water down environmental protection laws aimed at protecting the red squirrel and other species in the fragile environment of sacred Mount Graham.
Ola Cassadore Davis, chair of the Apache Survival Coalition, said Renzi was promoting unprincipled developers like the University of Arizona astronomers, at the expense of Apache religious life and Apache family values.
Davis criticized Renzi’s efforts to remove endangered species protections from the Mount Graham Red Squirrel and to thin and clear-cut the summit forest surrounding the Mount Graham International Observatory. The University of Arizona's $120 million Large Binocular Telescope is nearing completion, despite Apache protests and lawsuits.
“How would Congressman Renzi like to have the hair on the top of his head thinned and parts of his hair chopped out. That’s a pretty sacred place to him, I would guess. But he disrespects places that are sacred to us,” Davis said.
“Renzi should see the fire on top of Mount Graham in July as a warning from God,” she said, referring to the summer wild fires on Mount Graham caused by lightning.
Renzi and U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., are promoting the Mount Graham Sky Island Demonstration Project, which would allow tree thinning on about 2,000 acres on the mountain. The Congressmen said the aim is to protect 21 areas on the mountain from wildfires.
However, the proposal would exempt the project from the required environmental-impact statement, which Renzi and others have said is overly time-consuming.
Federal lawmakers held a formal hearing on the Endangered Species Act Endangered Species Act in Thatcher on Sept. 20. Members of the House Resources Committee said they would accept testimony only from subpoenaed individuals at Eastern Arizona College.
Renzi claimed environmental protection laws prevented forest thinning and contributed to the Nuttall and Gibson fires, charring 29,400 acres last summer.
Davis, however, said the wildfires are being used as a ploy by the Congressmen and greedy developers to washout environmental laws.
“Congressmen like Renzi would sacrifice sacred places in order that developers can destroy the forests, rivers, mountains and special places of this country. The reason our endangered fish and wildlife animals are now endangered is because unscrupulous developers backed by people like Renzi.”
Davis, among the Apaches making statements to protest, said they should look at the Earth to see what is happening.
“Renzi and the astronomers on Mt. Graham look up at the stars, but they don’t look down at their feet to see what they have destroyed on the earth beneath them.”
Raleigh Thompson, retired San Carlos Apache Tribal Council member, said it demonstrates how Congressmen serve the rich and powerful.
“As long as Congressmen like Renzi are around to serve rich and powerful developers by attacking the country’s cultural and environmental protection laws, endangered species problems will continue.
“How would Renzi like us to go to his Church and set up a rodeo or casino beside it or put an Indian crafts shop on top of his Church’s high altar? What he is doing to our mountain and its endangered red squirrel is no different.
“This disregard for people and animals is the way the white man has treated Indians since the 19th century.”
Thompson said Dzil Nchaa Si An (Mt. Graham) has been part of Apache tribal homeland for centuries.
“It was also part of the original reservation land given to us in 1871. But when early settlers and squatters came into our rich lands, they convinced the federal government to take Dzil Nchaa Si An away from us. They wanted it for its water, lumber and other resources.
“They took our fertile Gila River valley from us too, a place where the reports of the early federal Indian Agents said we grew corn and other crops for as far ‘as the eye could see.’ Congressmen just like Renzi have since 1871, on five separate occasions, dismembered about two-thirds of our original Apache reservation’s acreage.
“No wonder we are poor. They stole the best parts of our land. Congressmen like Renzi don’t care if we go extinct any more than they care if the Mount Graham Red Squirrel goes extinct.”
San Carlos Apache elder Erwin Rope said projects such as these get approval because they promise jobs, which never arrive.
“While the $200,000,000 taxpayer financed telescope project creates some temporary jobs, it creates very few permanent jobs,” Rope said.
Rope pointed out that according to the official Forest Service’s Arizona Department of Transportation studies, the most jobs created would be 33 in Tucson and 30 in Safford.
“That is an extremely inefficient and wasteful way for anybody to help local communities,” he said.
Mike Davis, Apache Survival Coalition member and American Indian, said Apaches must speak up to protect the small creatures.
“We Indians respect and honor the intent of our Great Spirit, -- for animals to live on this planet. It is wrong to abandon endangered animals that need our help as desperately as the Mount Graham Red Squirrel.”
Ola Cassadore Davis pointed out that Mount Graham has more vegetation life zones than any other mountain in North America, and that the forest at the summit is the southernmost spruce-fir forest in North America.
“We Apache also know this place is unique. It has been spiritually a part of us for centuries. But people like Renzi don’t care about anything except the money that can be made from those places.
“Look at the severely endangered animal like the Mount Graham Red Squirrel, now down to just a few hundred individuals before the recent fire.”
Apache protesters, which included elderly, said it was inappropriate for police to watch over their protest at the hearing with a police attack dog.
Davis said the Congressmen want to make the living creatures go extinct so the University of Arizona can build a city of telescopes on the mountain.
“If it hadn’t been for the squirrel, the University of Arizona would have by now built a city of telescopes all over the summit of this sacred mountain.”
The League of Conservation Voters recently named Renzi to its "dirty dozen" list of lawmakers which the group considers to have anti-environmental voting records.

Revolutionary Native Women Writers -- Twelve Years of Original Energies at Censored News

Censored News begins its 13th year of publishing in late September. Today we honor the Native women who were the first to share their voices and work with us. In the beginning, Censored News was a humble effort to reveal what had been censored when I was a staff writer at Indian Country Today. Through the years, it emerged, growing organically, as a platform for Indigenous Peoples and global human rights.
Kahentinetha Horn, long known for her defense of Oka, was among the first to generously share her work with Censored News. When Mohawks came to the southern border in 2006 and 2007, a powerful solidarity began between the north and the south, including the Zapatistas when Marcos and the Comandantes came to Sonora in 2007. Living in her homeland at Kahnawake, Kahentinetha publishes Mohawk Nation News, sharing guidance and words from the traditional teachings and the Mohawk Warrior Society. Kahentinetha writes the history that she lives.
Debra White Plume, revolutionary thinker and writer, living on her Lakota homeland on Pine Ridge, has shared her writings since the beginning. As the founder of Owe Aku International Justice Project, Debra has fought for the land, water and people, fighting against uranium mining and corruption, and fighting for truth and in defense of the land and water. When the Lewis and Clark re-enactors arrived in South Dakota, Debra gave them a symbolic "blanket of small pox." Censored News honored Debra twice previously as our 'Woman of Year' for her resistance.
Ofelia Rivas, O'odham lives on the Tohono O'odham Nation, at the so-called border that divides her family's homelands in what is now Sonora, Mexico, and Arizona. Ofelia exposed the construction crew on the border barrier digging up the remains of O'odham ancestors. The ancestors were later returned to their resting place with ceremony. She also exposed the Israeli spy towers now threatening O'odham communities. She has led the resistance to abuses by the U.S. Border Patrol in her homelands, and now delivers food and supplies to O'odham south of the border who are cut off from grocery stores by new border crossing  restrictions and closures of traditional routes. When the current US government halted migrants at the border, Ofelia welcomed them.
Michelle Cook, Dine' lawyer, has been a voice at Censored News since the beginning, sharing her experiences as a university student, first at the border, then in Iran, and later as she traveled from New Zealand, where she was a Fulbright scholar sharing with Maori, to the Mother Earth Conference in Cochabamba, Bolivia. At Standing Rock, she founded the Water Protector Legal Collective, and co-produced with Govinda Dalton, Standing Rock Spirit Resistance Radio, live from Oceti Sakowin. Michelle organized the bank divestment teams of Native women to Europe, hosted by WECAN International, in the fight against the Dakota Access Pipeline.
The long censored words of Louise Benally of Big Mountain, and Cree singer Buffy Sainte Marie, finally became known when I was terminated at Indian Country Today in 2006.
Earlier, Louise Benally spoke out against the bombing of Iraq on the day it was bombed by the United States, comparing it to the atrocities of the Dine' walking, suffering and dying on the Longest Walk to imprisonment. Louise remembered her ancestors at Fort Sumner, Bosque Redondo.
Indian Country Today censored Louise's voice and refused to publish a retraction. Louise continues to resist relocation at Big Mountain, orchestrated by Peabody Coal, energy barons and politicians.
Buffy Sainte Marie was at Dine' College on the Navajo Nation in 1999, joining John Trudell and other great Native musicians in concert. It was here that Buffy described how she was censored out of the music business by two U.S. Presidents -- Lyndon Johnson and Ronald Reagan. The US Presidents disappeared her shipments of records and told radio stations not to play her songs. Buffy's stance against the Vietnam War, and her song "Universal Soldier," made her a target for the war machine. 
Buffy's words at Dine' College were censored for seven years by Indian Country Today, Even when some of those words were published in 2006, the portion about uranium mining on Pine Ridge was censored by Indian Country Today. Buffy has generously shared her work with Censored News since the beginning.
Sandra Rambler, San Carlos Apache writer and photographer, was among those censored by Indian Country Today, in the struggle of Apaches to protect their land and water from politicians and corporations. Sandra shared the voices of San Carlos Apache elders -- the force behind protecting the land and water, sacred Mount Graham and Oak Flat -- before the elders made their journey to the Spirit World.
These revolutionary Native women writers and thinkers share the same love, tenacity and freedom of spirit shown by Che in South America. It is their willingness to sacrifice and arise that inspires new generations and generates hope.
There are no words adequate to express gratitude to these revolutionary writers, thinkers and organizers who were the first to share their words, photos, travels and clear thoughts  with Censored News.
Today, their voices are joined with Indigenous women from around the Earth, and their words of resistance, dignity, autonomy and self-reliance, without compromise, are translated into languages worldwide.
We say 'thank you' for your original energies. Your love, passion and clarity has steadily exploded into inspiration and movements in the homelands and around the world.

Apache Stronghold’s Spiritual Journey to the Nation’s Capitol

          SAN CARLOS, Ariz. – A group of spiritual runners who are members of the San Carlos Apache Tribe, some from the Navajo Nation and others from other various Indigenous Peoples, began their journey from Dzil Ncha Si An (Mount Graham) on Sunday, July 5 and arrived on Monday, July 6, at Chi’Chil’Bilda’Goteel (Oak Flat) on ancestral Apache land deemed holy and sacred to the San Carlos Apaches and surrounding tribes.

          Earlier on February 5, a spiritual march also began from the San Carlos Apache tribal headquarters to Oak Flat where occupation continues today.

          The spiritual journey of the Apache Stronghold caravan led by Wendsler Nosie, Sr., former Tribal Chairman and now the Peridot District Council for the San Carlos Apache Tribe, first stopped at the Gila River and Salt River Indian communities for spiritual prayers.   On the Navajo Nation, they met with spiritual leaders.  After stopping at the Jicarilla Apache Reservation in Dulce, NM, members of the Tribal Council unanimously passed a Tribal Resolution in support of the H.R. 2811, a bill introduced by AZ Representative, Raul Grijalva to stop the implementation of Section 3003 of the National Defense Authorization Act which was passed last December 2014, that allows federal land at Oak Flat to be given to a foreign mining giant, Resolution Copper Company-Rio Tinto-BHP to construct a billion dollar mine while promising jobs. 

          Over 560 tribes passed a resolution at the last National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) convention earlier this month supporting H.R. 2811.

          Stops have been made in Denver, CO, where Neil Young offered the pre-opening show to the Apache Stronghold.  Other spiritual prayers were also provided by members of the Sioux Nations in South Dakota when stops were made at the Crazy Horse Memorial and at Wounded Knee.  Radio, TV and newspaper interviews followed in various cities.  The convoy continued into Minneapolis, MINN and Chicago, ILL and were graciously greeted by those in support of the repeal of the land exchange.

          The convoy will continue to a press event at the Harrisburg State Capitol and then to New York City to appear on Good Morning America and a flash bomb at the Times Square.

          After traveling through Philadelphia, PA, the Apache Stronghold will arrive in Washington, D.C. onMonday, July 20 and prepare for the two-day spiritual gathering at the U.S. Capitol on Tuesday, July 21 and Wednesday, July 22 where tribal leaders and Rep. Grijalva and other members of the House and Senate will join the Apache Stronghold.

          “If the U.S. is giving away federal land to a foreign company to build a mine that will desecrate our holy and sacred land, then just give it back to us and we will take care of it as we have been since time immemorial,” said tribal elder Audrey Johnson in her native San Carlos Apache language.

Apaches say it is time for Sen. John McCain to retire, and that he has hurt Apache people by giving away their ancestral land for copper mining.

AZ Senator John McCain, IT'S TIME FOR YOU TO RETIRE! YOU ARE 78 YEARS OLD NOW AND ALREADY PUT IN 32 YEARS OF SERVICE. YES, YOU ARE A VETERAN OF WAR, BUT YOU HAVE REALLY HURT OUR APACHES AND INDIGENUOUS PEOPLES BY GIVING AWAY OUR ANCESTRAL LAND TO FOREIGN COMPANIES BHP/RESOLUTION COPPER/RIO TINTO. HOW MUCH MONEY DID YOU MAKE ON THIS LAND GRAB? WE HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW! SAVE OAK FLAT! NO MINING ON HOLY APACHE LAND!!!!

The national Indian media is also responsible for failing the Apache people.

Why doesn't the national Native American media have reporters in DC and elsewhere serving as watchdogs of the corporate and politican criminals like Sen. McCain? 

It is not a question of money. The national American Indian websites are owned and funded by the casino industry. So why are the 'reporters' staying home and plagiarizing? 

It is a failure of the ethical duty of journalists.

What an honor it is to say that I worked for four different tribal leadership in my life.  Dr. Ned Anderson, Sr., Harrison Talgo, Sr. (Interim), Wendsler Nosie, Sr., and Raymond Stanley, Sr.  Each of these Tribal Chairman contributed through their leadership to the San Carlos Apache Tribe.  And having worked for them in various capacities as Tribal Secretary, Community Press Liaison and Cultural Advisor, I realize how fortunate I am to have gained their trust enough to employ me to work for them under their leadership.

Tribal politics can be rough.  It can get ugly.  But, it’s the leadership that that keeps the people together as one strong nation.

Not everyone will be pleased with what you try to do for them.  If someone is mad, someone else will be upset about something else, it never ends.  You have to stay focus on your job.  Smile, be courteous and above all, treat everyone equal as much as you can even though it might be hard and someone is ready to throw something at you because you didn’t vote for their choice.  

The most common advice that I received from these tribal leaders was always, “Remember to pray,” or “don’t forget to pray,” or “did you pray today?”

Each of the meetings always began with a prayer.  The respect was always there at the beginning of each meeting and gathering.  

It was during the time when Dr. Ned Anderson, Sr., was our Tribal Chairman, in 1988, be presented to the Tribal Council, the passing of the Robert’s Rules of Order.  He was a firm believer in true democracy and always instilled the importance of our right to vote in our tribal elections and after 1948, the right to vote in our state and federal elections.  

Our tribal voting was usually on the first Tuesday in April of each year until he presented a resolution to the Tribal Council around that time period and asked them to change the Tribal Election Day to the first Tuesday in November which would coincide with the state and federal elections.  He would say, “Kill three birds with one stone and go out there and exercise your right to vote!”

Through his expertise in the law field, he was able to establish law and order for us.  He was also an avid hunter and always went hunting for big game.  He helped bring tourism through the San Carlos Lake Development and also through our Recreation and Wildlife Department.  He helped incorporate the concept of Indian Gaming when no one thought that we would ever have the Apache Gold Casino and now the tribe is working on their second Apache Sky Casino.

He had a great sense of humor.  Often times, members of the Tribal Council would tease one another, chat in Apache and tease one another.  Of course, there were serious times when business was taken care of.

He had a great respect and deep love for his wife, Delphine Hinton Anderson.  She was the love of his life and together they had beautiful children whom he also loved very dearly.

He was a champion of Native American Indian Rights!  He believed in self-governance and promoted education, health and especially housing for many of our Apache People.

It was through his hard work and long tiring and endless hours with other members of the Tribal Council, that they had reached a decision one of their Tribal Council meetings in the early 1980’s and filed a lawsuit against the U.S. government for accounting and land claims and water rights claims which were all later settled.  The San Carlos Apache Tribe was victorious!  And you should have seen his smile when all this came to fruition.

I remember when some of us received our per capita checks, this one lady from Navajo Point, the late Marion Kitcheyan said, “Thank you, Chairman Anderson!  I bought a washer and dryer with my money and now I am wearing clean clothes that I just washed!”

Another tribal member from out-of-state had written that she would be using her per capita check to pay for travel expenses to enroll her grandchildren because Chairman Anderson made her even more proud to be San Carlos Apache!  She had stayed away too long and wanted to come back to Apache land before she got any older.  There were other stories.

He was very well mannered and was very professional.  He was kind, compassionate and considerate of others.  He also had a open mind and was always listening to suggestions, but Chairman Anderson had to thoroughly think something out before be acted on it.  He was very intelligent and he was our first San Carlos Apache to graduate from law school and receive his Juris Doctorate Degree from the University of Arizona in Tucson.  I remember how our whole family was so proud of him and my grandmother, Ada Rope Jordan would always refer to him as a role model to us and tell us to be like him.  He made everyone proud.  And I am proud today to call him my, “Uncle Neddy.”

The morning when we received word that he passed on (April 16), I sat and cried and asked Creator God to watch over his family and especially his sons, Sean and Ned, Jr., who now will fulfill his legacy of providing for his family all of his life with his knowledge and always being a working man.

He participated in our traditional ceremonies and had relatives from all over.  He had relatives from all four districts in Bylas, Seven Mile Wash, Gilson Wash and Peridot.  And many relatives from the White Mountain Apache Tribe and other tribes.

He helped put the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation, San Carlos, Arizona, on the map.  He brought pride to us through his hard work and commitment to succeed as our tribal leader.

He firmly believed in protecting our Apache way of life and for that, I will always be grateful because that is what many of his relatives are doing today, protecting what is ours, like our ancestral lands as well.

To his wife, Delphine and family, our prayers and love goes out to you all.  Please know that we are very proud of Chairman Anderson for all that he has done for our San Carlos Apaches and Indian Country!  

May Creator God be with you all at this time.  Ahi’yihe! Ashoong!

On Feb. 5, tribal members and guests danced to four blessing songs by medicine man, Anthony Logan and other spiritual leaders at the San Carlos Apache Tribal Administration lawn prior to beginning the spiritual march to Oak Flat.

On Feb. 5, Tribal Vice-Chairman, Tao Etpison joined by Seven Mile Wash District Councilmembers, Bernadette Goode and Mitch Hoffman and Peridot District Councilman, Wendsler Nosie, Sr., at the outset of the 44-mile spiritual march from San Carlos to Oak Flat.

On Feb. 5, Peridot District Councilman, Wendsler Nosie, Sr., and his brother, Vansler Nosie, took turns in carrying the Eagle Staff from San Carlos to Oak Flat and were nearing Dripping Springs while tribal members were driving by yelling and honking their horns showing support against the land exchange.

On Feb. 5, Tribal Chairman, Terry Rambler and Vice-Chairman, Tao Etpison, made welcome to guests and tribal members who were preparing to participate in the All Nations Spiritual Gathering at Oak Flat beginning with the spiritual march that morning.  

On Feb. 4, the All Nations Spiritual Gathering at Oak Flat began with a rally on the lawn of the Tribal Administration Headquarters where the youth sang, spoke, shared poetry and painted.  Krys Yoyetewa was among those who participated who drew a picture of a young Apache girl during her coming of age ceremony.  She is the daughter of Jennifer Wesley and Brian Yoyetewa and the God-daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Amos Thorne.

On Feb. 4, Carrie Reede Curley drew a picture of a young Apache girl in traditional attire and participated in the spiritual march from the San Carlos Apache Tribal Headquarters on Feb. 5 through Feb. 6 to Oak Flat and was instrumental in helping carry the staff during ther spiritual march.

                "The words of our ancestors still hold true today, 'You are born an Apache!  You will die as an Apache! Don’t ever act like the White Man—the enemy!'"

            How do you respond to a White Man whose name is Paul Gosar, an Arizona Congressman who recently said, “You’re still wards of the government.”

            And then he continues and says, “One of the federal government’s dirty little secrets is that Native American tribes are not fully sovereign nations in today’s society.”

            He continues that his, “comments made at the roundtable (Dec. 19) were about his reality and current laws that govern the relationship between tribes and the federal government.”

            He could easily be labeled the “Christopher Columbus” of this century just like Arizona Senator, John McCain could be labeled as one.

            How much more can these White Men who don’t give a crap about our Apache People continue to ridicule us?  How much longer can we take this?  These are the robots of Resolution Copper Company doing business under the Rio Tinto mining giant along with their bought Arizona Congresswoman, Ann Kirkpatrick.

            Exactly how much did they pay their token “Apaches” to write letters to the Senate and Congress and tell them it’s okay to build the mine at Oak Flat?  How many Apaches in total?  How could our own Apaches betray our own people’s beliefs?  How could they sell us out so easy?

            Now that President Obama has signed the over 1,000 page Defense Bill which entails over $585 billion of dollars, what happens to the San Carlos Apaches?  What happens to our holy site at Chi’Chil’Bagoteel? What about our acorn and medicinal plants there?  What about the traditional ceremonies planned in the future? 

            The major concern that we should have is about our water.  Where will this mining giant get the water from?  They need over 50,000,000 (50 million) gallons of water to operate that each year.  Where will it come from?  Will they go after the legislatures to get that water from us?  They will be only 12 miles away from the Gilson Wash District boundary line of our reservation.  Then what?

            Cancer!  Our water will be infested and our people will continue to die from cancer.  Why doesn’t anyone think about that?  Especially those “few Apaches” who sold us out!

            Do you think for one minute that the people wouldn’t find out how you betrayed your own Apache people?  For what?  So you could side with a foreign mining company from Australia?  And yet you claim to be a San Carlos Apache?

            There’s ways that these things leak out and have a tendency to be shared with others.  There’s a bigger battle that we need to fight and that is to protect our sovereignty.  Here, Congressman Gosar is basically making fun of us and at one time he was our Representative from our District.  Now, we have a Democrat (so-called) Arizona Congresswoman Kirkpatrick who isn’t any better and sold us out, too.  And why does she wear campdresses at the Apache parades?  Who gave them to her when she doesn’t even respect the Apache ways and she has no right to be wearing our traditional wear.  She’s a disgrace to us because she doesn’t truly represent us or our interest.

            This is the time that we need to unite as Apaches as one people.  It’s not this district against that district or that candidate against that other candidate, it’s about the whole and entire San Carlos Apache Tribe that we have to defend.  If we don’t, who will help us?  Absolutely no one and these White People will continue to make fun of us and ridicule us which is downright sickening.

            Please keep the members of our San Carlos Apache Tribal Council in prayer that they will all stand together as one and not be easily swayed or bought out.  That they will be true to their constituents and vote as one body in prayer and keeping all of the San Carlos Apaches in their best interests.   I applaud former Chairman, Wendsler Nosie, Sr., and our current re-elected Chairman, Terry Rambler and newly elected Vice-Chairman, Tao Etpison, for all working together in unity to protect the interests of our San Carlos Apaches.

            I was brought up to be a proud Apache and proud of my heritage and where I come from.  I’m sure many of you were taught those ways, too.  By no means, will I shun away my fellow Apaches in their fight to stand up what rightfully belongs to us.  This was Apacheland first!  Before any White Man ever walked on this land!  That’s what they fail to remember.  The White Man has failed us, over and over again through their greedy and selfish actions.  This is another hard rock that has been thrown at us while we are standing.  Congressman Gosar can call us, “wards of the government,” all he wants.  We are still human beings that don’t want no part of the British Parliament or the Roman Empire.

            The words of our ancestors still hold true today, “You are born an Apache!  You will die as an Apache! Don’t ever act like the White Man—the enemy!” 

            These same words were said to us often by our dearly and beloved late grandmother and the spirit of the Apache is alive today as we are challenged to stand up to protect what is rightfully ours—our Apache way of life that no one, not even the White Man can ever take away from us.  And no one can take away my feelings and opinion as an Apache!

D’où est-ce que çà viendra ? Est-ce qu’ils s’adresseront aux législatures pour avoir notre eau ? Ils ne seront qu’à moins de 20 km de la frontière de notre réserve dite frontière du District de Gilson Wash. Et alors, quoi ?
Cancer ! Notre eau sera contaminée et les gens continueront à mourir du cancer. Pourquoi personne n’y pense ? En particulier ces « quelques Apaches » qui nous ont vendus !
Avez-vous pensé ne serait-ce qu’une minute que les gens ne découvriraient pas que vous avez trahi votre propre peuple Apache ? Pour quoi ? Pour pouvoir soutenir une compagnie minière étrangère d’Australie ? Et cependant, vous prétendez être Apache San Carlos ?
Il y a des canaux par lesquels ces choses fuient et ont tendance à être partagées avec d’autres. Nous avons une plus grande bataille a mené, celle pour protéger notre souveraineté. Ce n’est pas un district contre un autre ou un candidat contre un autre, c’est la tribu Apache San Carlos dans sa totalité et son intégralité que nous devons défendre. Si nous ne le faisons pas, qui nous aidera ? Absolument aucun de ces Blancs qui continuent à se moquer de nous et nous ridiculiser, ce qui est proprement écœurant.
Je prie pour que les membres de notre Conseil Tribal Apache San Carlos soient en prière et se tiennent ensemble et ne se laissent pas détourner de la bonne voie ou soient achetés. Pour qu’ils soient fidèles à leurs électeurs et votent en un seul corps dans la prière pour maintenir les Apaches San Carlos au meilleur des leurs intérêts. J’applaudis l’ex-Président Wendsler Nosie Sr. et notre actuel Président réélu, Terry Rambler et le Vice-président nouvellement élu, Tao Etpison, pour avoir travaillé ensemble dans l’unité pour protéger les intérêts de nos Apaches San Carlos.
J’ai été élevée pour être une Apache fière, fière de mon héritage et d’où je viens. Je suis sûre que beaucoup d’entre vous ont été élevés de cette manière aussi. En aucun cas je ne m’éloignerai de mes Apaches dans leur combat pour ce qui nous appartient de droit. Çà a été le Pays Apache d’abord ! Avant que tout Homme Blanc n’ai jamais été dans ce pays ! C’est ce qu’ils évitent de se rappeler. L’Homme Blanc nous a trahis, encore et toujours, dans ses actes avides et égoïstes. C’est une autre pierre qui nous a été jetée alors que nous ne faisions rien. Le membre du Congrès Gosar peut nous appeler « pupilles du gouvernement » tant qu’il veut. Nous sommes toujours des êtres humains qui ne voulons aucune part du Parlement Britannique ou de l’Empire Romain.
Les paroles de nos ancêtres sont toujours vraies aujourd’hui, « Tu es né Apache ! Tu mourras Apache ! N’agis jamais comme l’Homme Blanc – l’ennemi ! »
Les mêmes paroles nous ont souvent été dites par nos chères et aimées grand-mères et l’esprit Apache est bien vivant aujourd’hui, quand nous sommes au défi de résister pour protéger ce qui nous appartient en droit – notre mode de vie Apache que personne, pas même l’Homme Blanc ne pourra jamais nous retirer. Et personne ne peut me retirer mes sentiments et mon opinion en tant qu’Apache !

Er zijn genoeg manieren om deze zaken te lekken en te delen met anderen.

Er is nog een hardere strijd die moet geleverd worden en dat is de strijd om onze soevereiniteit te beschermen.

Hier maakt congreslid Gosar zich vrolijk over ons en dan te bedenken dat hij ééns onze districtsvertegenwoordiger was.

Nu hebben we Kirkpatrick, een zogenaamde ‘democratische’ congresvrouw voor Arizona, die echter geen haar beter is en ons verkocht heeft.

En waarom draagt ze in godsnaam ‘kampjurken’ tijdens de Apache parades?

Wie heeft haar die gegeven? Daar waar ze geen respect heeft voor de traditionele Apache manier van leven heeft ze niet het recht om onze traditionele kledij te dragen!

Zij maakt ons tot schande omdat zij ons niet vertegenwoordigd.

Nu is de tijd gekomen dat het Apache volk zich moet verenigen als volk. Het gaat niet meer over het ene district tegen het andere, deze kandidaat tegen die kandidaat, het gaat over de hele San Carlos Apache stam die wij moeten verdedigen. Wanneer wij het niet doen, wie zal ons dan helpen?

Absoluut niemand, het blanke volk zal blijven doorgaan met ons te kleineren.

Hou de mensen van onze San Carlos Apaches in uw gebeden, zodat zij allen samen zullen opstaan in eenheid en zich niet meer laten beïnvloeden of kopen.

Dat zij trouw zullen blijven aan hun kiesmannen en als één stemmen in gebed.

Ik juich onze voormalige voorzitter Wendsler Nosie Sr., onze huidige herkozen voorzitter Terry Rambler en nieuw verkozen vice -voorzitter Tao Etpison toe, die in eendracht samenwerken voor de belangen van onze San Carlos Apaches.

Ik zal nooit aflaten om mijn mede Apaches te steunen in de strijd voor wat rechtmatig van ons is.

Voor er ook maar één blanke man voet zette op dit land was het reeds Apacheland!

Dat schijnen ze te vergeten.

De blanken hebben ons tekort gedaan, steeds opnieuw met hun hebzuchtige en egoïstische daden.

Congresman Gosar mag ons “stukjes van de regering” noemen zoveel hij wil. Wij zijn mensen die geen deel willen uitmaken van het Britse parlement of het Romeinse rijk.

“ De woorden van onze voorvaderen bevatten vandaag nog waarheden, “ Als Apache wordt je geboren! Als Apache zal je sterven! Word nooit zoals de blanke man- de vijand!”

Diezelfde woorden werden dikwijls gesproken door onze lieve en betreurde grootmoeder en de geest van de Apache leeft vandaag nog wanneer we opstaan en dat verdedigen wat rechtsmatig van ons is- onze Apache manier van leven dat niemand, zelfs de blanke man, nooit zal kunnen afnemen.

"Die Worte von unseren Ahnen sind immer noch wahr, "Du bist als Apache geboren!" Du wirst als Apache sterben! Handle niemals wie der Weiße Mann--der Feind!"

Wie antwortest du einem Weißen Mann dessen Name Paul Gosar ist, ein Arizona Kongressabgeordneter, welcher vor kurzem sagte "Ihr seid immer noch ein Mündel der Regierung." 
Er fuhr fort indem er sagte: "Eines von den Bundes-Regierungs schmutzigen Geheimnissen ist, dass die Stämme der Ureinwohners von Amerika bis zum heutigen Tage in dieser Gesellschaft keine keine eigenständigen frein Nationen sind."
Er wiederholte das seine "Kommentare die am 19.Dez. am runden Tisch gesagt wurden die Realität der momentanen Gesetze wiederspiegeln, welche die Freundschaft zwischen den Stämmen und der Bundes-Regierung regeln. 
Man könnte könnte ihn einfacherweise auch als "Christopher Columbus" bezeichnen sowie man auch Arizona Senator John McCain ihn als diesen bezeichnen könnte. 
Wieviel mehr können diese Weißen Männer, welche sich einen Dreck um uns Apachen kümmern, forfahren uns zu verspotten. Es sind die Roboter der Resolution Copper Company welche Geschäfte mit dem Rio Tinto Minen Giganten zusammen mit der gekauften Arizona Kongressabgeordneten, Ann Kirkpatrick.
Wieviel genau haben sie bezahlt für den Gutschein "Apaches" um Briefe an den Senat und dem Kongress zu schreiben und ihnen zu sagen, dass es in Ordnung ist die Mine in Oak Flat zu bauen? Wieviel Apachen im Gesammten? Wie konnten Menschen unseres eigenen Volkes Betrug am Glauben der Apachen begehen? Wie konnten sie diese so einfach aufkaufen?
Jetzt wo Präsident Obama den über 1000-Seiten langen Verteidigungsentwurf unterschrieben hat, ein Entwurf, der mehr als 585 Milliarden von Dollar mit sich bringt, was passiert mit den San Carlos Apachen? Was passiert mit unserer heiligen Stätte in Chi`Chil`Bagoteel? Was ist mit unserer Eichel und medizinischen Pflanzen dort? Was ist geplant mit unseren traditionellen Zeremonien in der Zukunft?
Die Hauptsorge die wir haben sollten ist unser Wasser. Von woher will dieser Minen Gigant sein Wasser bekommen? Sie brauchen über 50.000.000 (50 Million) Gallonen von Wasser im Jahr um sie in Gang zu setzen. Woher soll dies kommen?
Werden sie die Gesetzesgewalt zu Hilfe nehmen um das Wasser von uns zu bekommen? Sie werden nur 12 Meilen von der Gilson Wash Grenzlinie von unserem Reservat entfernt sein. Und dann?
Krebs? Unser Wasser wird vergiftet sein und unser Volk wird weiterhin an Krebs sterben. Warum denkt niemand an das? Ganz speziell diese "paar Apachen" die uns aufgekauft haben!!!
Denkt ihr nicht eine Minute daran dass unser Volk dies herausfinden würde wie sehr ihr Eure eigenen Landsleute betrügt? Für was? 
Ist es deshalb dass ihr mit einer ausländischen Minen Company von Australien euch zusammentun könnt? ..Und Ja, ihr behauptet San Carlos Apachen zu sein?
Es gibt Wege dass diese Dinge bekannt werden mit einer Tendenz dass es mit anderen geteilt wird. Da ist eine größere Schlacht die wir kämpfen müssen und das bedeutet unsere eigene Souveränität zu schützen. Hier, Kongressabgeordneter Gosar macht sich grundsätzlich nur lustig über uns und plötzlich wird er zum Repräsentant von unserem Distrikt. Jetzt haben wir eine Demokratische (sogenannte) Arizona Kongressabgeordnete Kirkpatrick welche auch nicht besser ist und uns auch ausverkauft hat. Und warum trägt sie Camp-Kleidung an den Apachen Paraden. Wer gab ihr diese wenn sie nicht mal die Denkensweise der Apachen respektiert und sie nicht einmal das Recht hat diese traditionelle Kleidung zu tragen? Sie ist eine Schande für uns denn sie repräsentiert unsere Interessen wahrlich nicht. 
Dies ist die Zeit in der wir Apachen uns vereinigen müssen um als eine Stimme zu sprechen. Es ist nicht dieser Distrikt gegen einen anderen Distrikt oder dieser Kandidat gegen jenen Kandidaten, sondern es geht um den gesammten San Carlos Apachen Stamm welchen wir verteidigen müssen. Wenn wir dies nicht tun, wer wird uns helfen? Absolut niemand und diese Weißen Menschen werden weiterhin sich über uns lustig machen und uns verspotten was geradezu widerwärtig ist.
Bitte behaltet die Mitglieder von unseren San Carlos Apache Stammesrat im Gebet, so dass sie alle als eine Person zusammenstehen und nicht leicht zu beeinflussen sind oder aufgekauft werden. Dass Sie treu zu ihren wesentlichen Bestandteilen bleiben und als einen Körper im Gebet voten und alle San Carlos Apachen in ihren bestem Interesse vertreten. Ich schätze den ehemaligen Vorsitzenden, Wendsler Nosie, Sr., und unseren aktuellen wiedergewählten Vorsitzenden Terry Rambler und den neu gewählten Vizepräsidenten Tao Etpison, für die Zusammenarbeit in einer Einheit um die Interessen unserer San Carlos Apachen zu schützen.
Mir wurde beigebracht ein stolzer Apache zu sein und stolz zu sein auf mein kulturelles Erbe und wo ich herkomme. Ich bin sicher viele von Euch wurde dies auch beigebracht. Auf keinen Fall werde ich meinen Apachen Artgenossen aus dem Weg gehen um sie in Ihrem Kampf zu unterstützen was rechtmäßig uns gehört. Dies war zuerst Apachenland. Bevor jeder weiße Mann jemals seine Füsse auf dieses Land gesetzt hat. Dies ist woran sie sich nicht mehr erinnern. Der weiße Mann hat an uns immer wieder durch seinen selbstsüchtigen und gierigen Aktionen versagt. Dies ist ein weiterer harter Stein der auf uns geworfen wird während wir aufrecht stehen. Der Kongressabgeordnete Gosar kann uns "Mündel der Regierung" nennen so oft er will. Wir sind immer noch Menschen die kein Teil des Britischen Parlaments oder des römischen Reichs haben wollen. Die Worte von unseren Vorfahren halten heute immer noch "Du bist als Apache geboren! Du wirst als Apache sterben! Handle nicht wie der weiße Mann---der Feind!"
Dieselben Worte wurden uns oft von unser teuer geliebten verstorbenen Großmutter gesagt und der Geist der Apachen ist heute am Leben nachdem wir aufgestanden sind das zu schützen was rechtmäßig uns gehört.---unser Apachen Weg des Lebens den niemand..nicht einmal der weiße Mann uns jemals wegnehmen kann. Und nieman kann meine Gefühle und meine Meinung als Apache mir nehmen!
