Fossil Fuel Lobbyists Saturate U.N. Climate Summit COP29 in Azerbaijan
By WECAN International, Censored News, Nov. 15, 2024
BAKU, Azerbaijan -- Fossil fuel lobbyists continue to saturate every corner of COP 29.
At least 1,773 fossil fuel lobbyists have been granted access to the COP29 summit in Baku— one of the largest delegations this year.
Even though countries agreed to transition off of fossil fuels last year, false solutions that perpetuate fossil fuel expansion continue to be peddled by governments and corporations all seeking to profit off the escalating climate crisis.
It’s past time to kick big polluters out!
We are calling for governments to phase out fossil fuels now, and to endorse the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty!

Indigenous Women Defend Amazon
“We are calling all women, not only Indigenous women, not only Brazilian women but we are calling on all women across the globe to become a part of this movement to protect the Amazon and to protect the planet," said Puyr Tembé, First Secretary of State for Indigenous Peoples of Pará in the Brazilian Amazon, co-founder of Ancestral Indigenous Women Warriors, ANMIGA, and WECAN #COP29 Delegate.
At COP29 in Baku WECAN hosted a press conference, “Indigenous Women from Brazil: Calls for Climate Action on the Road to COP30,” where Indigenous women leaders from Brazil took the stage to deliver powerful calls to action for Indigenous rights, protection of the Amazon, women’s leadership, and climate justice on the road to COP30 in Brazil!

The science is clear. Our communities are clear. The Earth is clear— we need an urgent and immediate phase out of fossil fuels! We need real solutions that reduce emissions at the source, not more carbon markets and offsets that seek to buy and sell communities and ecosystems.
Carbon markets and offsets, often promoted as ‘climate solutions’, are ineffective and cause irreparable harm, specifically for Indigenous peoples who are key defenders of biodiversity and our climate. Indigenous communities face forced removals, loss of access to their lands, or are subject to restrictions that disrupt traditional practices and violate their rights and sovereignty.
Leaders need to get their heads out of the oil well and listen to people and planet. We are calling for countries to endorse the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, implement a robust Just Transition, for wealthy countries to ensure significant climate finance, and pay-up on finance commitments.
At COP29, WECAN is sharing widely our report, “The Need for Real Zero Not Net Zero: Shifting from False Solutions to Real Solutions and a Just Transition,” which outlines what false solutions are, and why we need to stop them, and instead invest in a Just Transition. WECAN is here, on the ground, participating in negotiations, engaging in civil society actions, and uplifting the leadership of women who are on the frontlines and carrying with them critical solutions and strategies for protecting ecosystems, communities, and climate!
World Leaders Leading in Pollution are Absent
Day 2 at #COP29! From crucial discussions on climate finance, human rights, advocating for policies that can outlive the next US administration and instead build a #JustTransition to amplifying Indigenous rights and centering care in climate solutions. We’re standing strong alongside partners to demand an end to the era of fossil fuels and envision and build a healthy and just future for all generations!🌱
Today was the opening of the World Leaders Climate Action Summit, where global leaders are presenting statements on how they are advancing efforts for the Paris Climate Agreement. Notably, several country leaders from some of the largest polluting countries are not in attendance including Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, China’s President Xi Jinping, and US President Biden. While the main contributors to the climate crisis were absent, WECAN showed up in full force to present our demands for climate action!
