Canoe Journey, an annual tradition of traveling on ancestral waterways

Power Paddle to Puyallup Youth Canoe Journey 2024

Puyallup Tribal Council welcomed home Puyallup canoes on Tuesday at Owen Beach in Tacoma which served as the soft landing site for the Power Paddle to Puyallup Youth Canoe Journey.

The canoes were welcomed with songs and dancing from members of the Puyallup Canoe Family and Heritage Division before asking permission to come ashore.

Connie McCloud shared, “The whole point of this Youth Journey is to teach our children so that you have the adults, you have the Elders, working with the youth to train them to be in the leadership position. It doesn’t eliminate any canoe families from participating. It puts the focus on training our youth.”

This statement captures the purpose and goal of this year's journey in that our Puyallup shores are open to all.

The youth journey is an opportunity for elders to impart their knowledge, for adults to guide and support, and for our youth to step confidently into roles of leadership. This will assist in ensuring that the culture is continued on through future generations.

Chairman Bill Sterud delivered remarks, along with FIFA World Cup 26 CEO Peter Tomozawa. A crew from FIFA was on hand to film for future promotional video as part of the Tribe's partnership with FIFA for World Cup 26.

Heritage Division Manager Connie McCloud shared a prayer to close things out.
The official landing for all canoes on the journey is set for today, July 31, in Tacoma.

The welcome begins today at 1 p.m., with dinner from 6 to 8 pm. See schedule at

Thank you Puyallup Tribe for allowing Censored News to share your beautiful photos.
