Aboriginal Elder Describes Australia's Child Abuse to United Nations

GENEVA -- Aboriginal elder BJ Cruse described the Australian government's child abuse and cultural genocide of children -- aimed at breaking Aboriginal children's spirit -- during the United Nations Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
"In a public hospital at the age of five the nurses dressed me in an make shift gown, fashioned from an empty cooking flour sack, stenciled on the front and back was the word Abo which is short for Aboriginal it symbolizes a half human,” Cruse told the United Nations.
Cruse, Yuin and chairman of Eden Aboriginal Land Council in New South Wales, described being slapped and brutally punished as a child. He urged the United Nations to call out Australia for its child abuse and demand it compensate its victims.
“World criticisms caused Australian governments to end Aboriginal gene-pool genocide -- but failed to end governments lingering cultural genocide of Aboriginal people,” Cruse told the United Nations.
"Governments waged psychological warfare through intended cultural genocide by breaking Aboriginal children’s spirit with brutal conditioning to submissiveness for assigning, as domestic workers or placement within white homes. Government institutionalized Aboriginal child abuse endured into the 1970’s."
Cruse told the United Nations that Australia's government has not supported the U.N. Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples -- which prohibits forced assimilation and destruction of culture -- despite its promise to do so.
Cruse’s statement was was among those submitted to the U.N. from Australia Aboriginals and human rights organizations, detailing the abuse of Aboriginal children in schools and institutions, high rates of incarceration rates of Aboriginal children in prisons, and high rates of deaths in custody.
The report of the U.N. Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples 17th session, July 8 –12, now goes to the United Nations Human Rights Council.

My name is BJ Cruse and I am a Yuin man and Chairman of Eden Aboriginal Land Council in NSW Australia.
I’d like to pay my respects to the Elders and Ancestors, past and present, and extend my appreciation to First Nations experts and participants at this session.
World criticisms caused Australian governments to end Aboriginal gene-pool genocide, but failed to end governments lingering cultural genocide of Aboriginal people.
White Australia policies prevented Aboriginal language and cultural practice.
Governments waged psychological warfare through intended cultural genocide by breaking Aboriginal children’s spirit with brutal conditioning to submissiveness for assigning, as domestic workers or placement within white homes. Government institutionalised Aboriginal child abuse endured into the 1970’s.

Made to follow the nurses all day repeatedly holding onto one of their apron strings in each hand, failing to turn at the same time and direction I would pull a left or right apron string undone, hence she would slap me on the corresponding side of the face.
When the nurse stopped suddenly and I ran into the back of her she would slap me on both sides of the face, if she walked too fast, I’d pull both apron strings undone and she would slap me on both sides of the face. When not following the nurses, I was forced to sit on the bed on my knees with my back straight and a stack of books on my head.
The Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples was adopted by the General Assembly on Thursday 13 September 2007. In 2017 Australia put forward a successful bid for a seat on the UN Human Rights Council along with a statement from the Australian government, pledging to support the Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous people in both word and deed.
The Australian government continue to fail to do this. Article 8 of the Declaration states: ‘Indigenous peoples have the right not to be subject to forced assimilation or the destruction of their culture’. But Aboriginal peoples continue to suffer from the ongoing trauma and horrendous acts of child abuse committed by government institutions.
I call upon the Expert Mechanism to call out Australian governments and demand that more be done to properly compensate the many Aboriginal people that continue to suffer trauma from past Australian governments institutional cultural child abuse."

Cruse's statement was presented during the session on Item 3: Study and advice on Constitutions, laws, legislation, policies, judicial decisions, and other mechanisms through which States have taken measures to achieve the ends of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, in accordance with Article 38 of the Declaration.
