WINDOW ROCK, Navajo Nation -- Navajo Police were sent today to evict Marley Shebala, Dine' Zuni Pueblo reporter, from her home. Marley, 73, screamed in pain as she was arrested by police. Marley had filed an ethics complaint against Navajo President Buu Nygren, and was reporting on the ongoing corruption in the Navajo tribal government.

"I am 73 years old, and they have me handcuffed in my home with my daughter, our Navajo police, to serve and protect" Marley says, as she continues to livestream. Navajo police used a locksmith to enter her home, before the violent arrest.

"I am not standing up, I'm not doing anything for you guys, if you want me to go you can drag me," she said, and then screamed in pain, "My arm! my arm!" Marley continued to scream from the pain during the violent arrest by Navajo police.

Marley Shebala

Marley had just filed an ethics complaint against Navajo President Buu Nygren, and was reporting on the current chaos and corruption in the Navajo Nation government. She has spent her life as a reporter in her homeland, the Navajo Nation.

Marley's livestream shows the Navajo police serving her a home eviction document. Marley said she had no advance notice, there was no hearing, and her attorney had been disbarred.

Then, Marley and her daughter, handcuffed, tell the Navajo police that the Navajo police never respond when there is a home burglary, car theft, or missing person. It was the community, not the Navajo police, who caught burglars.

"When we ask for help, we can't even get a cop to come for two hours, women are being beaten," Marley's daughter, handcuffed, tells the Navajo police. She said Vernon Tsosie was found in a different area, dismembered.

Before mother and daughter were handcuffed, a locksmith can be seen and heard breaking in through the front door lock of her home, in Karigan Estates, a Navajo funded  housing development, west of the Navajo capitol in the community of St. Michaels.

"No one read me my rights," Marley said during her arrest.

Marley was reporting on the Navajo President's removal of the controller, and ongoing corruption in the Navajo government.

"Is this retaliation by Navajo police?" Marley asks during the livestream, pointing out that she had filed an ethics complaint against Navajo President Nygren, and reported on Nygren's removal of the tribe's controller.

"Be prepared if you speak up," Marley says.

Marley said two weeks ago, "I'm still moving forward with the filing of my Navajo Nation Ethics in Government Complaint against Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren for hiring his father-in-law as his child's babysitter and security guard for his wife, Navajo Nation First Lady Jasmine Blackwater-Nygren in 2023."

Navajo Nation Council: President Took Missing Person's Funds for his Office

The Navajo Nation Council said that Navajo President Nygren had removed funding for search and rescue services for missing persons, including search dogs, and transferred the funds to his own office for travel.

The Navajo Council said that Nygren defunded missing persons services in the amount of $229,000, and redirected the funding for Nygren’s travel and operating expenses. The Council approved $250,000 for the 4 Corners K-9 Search and Rescue to support search and rescue missions for missing persons on the Navajo Nation.

"The Office of the Controller expressed concern about the transfer of the funds from its intended purpose." the Council said in a statement.

Update: The Navajo Council said, "The Navajo Nation District Court has granted a temporary restraining order, stopping further actions related to Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren’s attempted unlawful removal of Navajo Nation Controller Sean McCabe and the appointment of an 'Interim' Controller." link

ICE, Uranium Trucks, and Palestine

Navajo President Nygren recently shocked many Dine' when he encouraged them to work for ICE -- even though the president had previously warned Navajos that ICE may illegally attempt to arrest Navajos in ICE's ongoing violent arrests of migrants.

Nygren also entered into a secret agreement with Energy Fuels to transport radioactive uranium ore across the Navajo Nation, without consulting the Navajo Nation Council, the Council said.

The deadly trucks travel from Energy Fuels Pinyon Plain uranium mine in the Grand Canyon on Havasupai's ancestral land in Arizona, through the Navajo and Hopi Nations, to dump the radioactive loads, covered only with tarps, at Energy Fuels mill  in the White Mesa Ute community in Utah.

Nygren also partnered with the White House in the push for new coal mining, without consulting the Navajo Council.

After taking office, Nygren's Vice President Richelle Montoya accused him of sexual harassment. Nygren's denials can be viewed in his press statements.

In related news, Marley Shebala is the only Navajo journalist to report on the protest of the Raytheon Missiles factory on the Navajo Nation.

In an article written for Navajo Times, Marley reported in December of 2023 on the local protest of the bombing of Palestine, and the Navajo facility producing missiles for Raytheon Missiles.

"During an hour-long meeting in the president’s office last Friday, a group of young Diné adults urged President Buu Nygren to support a permanent ceasefire of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza," Marley reported.

The group from the K’é Info Shop urged Nygren to shut down the Raytheon Diné Facility.

Nygren, and the Navajo Nation Council, have been silent about the Navajo missile production for Raytheon Missiles and the ongoing genocide in Palestine for the past two years.

Raytheon Missiles has been among the top profiteers from weapons sales to Israel during the genocide in Palestine.

In 2006, Indian Country Today forbid reporting on the Raytheon Dine' Facility, located on the Navajo Nation's commercial farm, Navajo Agricultural Products Industry, east of Shiprock, New Mexico, where the tribe grows potatoes, beans and other crops.

For the past 19 years, it has been one of the most censored issues in Indian country -- a stone wall of silence.

Dine' Comment

He SOLD our SOVEREIGNTY
Buu Nygren Is Not Protecting Us. He Is Betraying Us
On September 16, Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren stood with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, ICE, FBI, and FEMA to announce a “public safety initiative.” He claimed it was about cybersecurity and crime. But in truth, this move shows us where his loyalty lies and it is not with the Navajo People.
1. He Sold Our Sovereignty
Nygren has tied Navajo police and emergency management directly to federal agencies. This means Homeland Security and ICE will have more power inside our Nation than our own People. That is not sovereignty, that is surrender.
2. He Wants Diné to Work for ICE
Nygren called on Navajo citizens to join ICE. ICE is an agency known for separating families, abusing Indigenous people along the border, and terrorizing communities. For a Navajo president to encourage Diné to become agents of ICE is betrayal. He is asking us to turn against our relatives for federal approval.
3. He Misuses Our Money
Nygren signed $5 million to create a “specialized police unit.” Not for water. Not for homes. Not for our schools or elders. Instead, millions are going into a militarized unit that will work side by side with DHS and ICE. Our people live without running water and electricity, yet he funds police forces that answer to outsiders.
4. He Keeps Secrets
This deal was announced in Phoenix with federal partners, not with the People in Window Rock or in our Chapters. Once again, Nygren hides his plans, denies the People’s voice, and chooses secrecy over transparency.
5. He Is Silent on Real Threats
Nygren stays quiet about Raytheon’s missile factory on Navajo land, about uranium contamination, about misuse of ARPA funds, about broken infrastructure. He is silent when it comes to defending us, but loud when it comes to marching in step with ICE and Homeland Security.
Our Truth
This is not protection.
This is not leadership.
This is betrayal.
The Diné People deserve leaders who defend sovereignty, protect our families, and put our elders and children first not leaders who sell us out to federal agencies.
