Going to the Shiprock Fair, Klee Benally Remembered the Uranium Dump on the Banks of the San Juan River

By Brenda Norrell, Censored News, August 29, 2024

SHIPROCK, Navajo Nation -- In his book published shortly before his passing, Klee Benally writes of going to the Northern Navajo Fair and the uranium dump in Shiprock that no one talks about. It is along the San Juan River, the same river that flooded here this week, now eight months after Klee's passing.

"The Northern Navajo Fair at Tsé Bit A'í (Shiprock, New Mexico) has been held for more than one hundred years," Klee writes in 'No Spiritual Surrender: Indigenous Anarchy in Defense of the Sacred.'

Klee describes how the fair each fall marks the changing of the seasons and the harvest. He describes the neon glow of the carnival in the cold, dusty nights, and the juniper fires that burn.

Navajo President Buu Nygren announced solar energy for Navajo homes today -- but doesn't point out the price. It's a lot of money for Dine' elderly, starting at $80 a month. For families of four, the solar energy cost is $240 a month.

Navajo Power Home is a for-profit business that the Navajo president is promoting today at a session with U.S. heads in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Meanwhile, there are millions of dollars in grants for solar being given to non-profits for homes on the Navajo Nation and across Indian country -- where is the free solar?

"Haul No! Hold Media Responsible for Genocide, Plagiarism, and Failure to Honor the Sacrifices

By Brenda Norrell, Censored News, August 27, 2024

For 52 years Jack Ahasteen turned out cutting-edge cartoons for Navajo Times. When he asked for a fair wage, Navajo Times ended his life long career. Now, Ahasteen is being honored with serving as the Grand Marshal of the Navajo Nation Fair Parade.

Today, Censored News looks at the changing face of journalism -- from the media fueling genocide in Palestine, to the cut throat tactics of starving journalists who love their art, to the sham of the media manufacturing the news with plagiarism, living as parasites off of others hard work.

Congratulations to Jack Ahasteen -- you made a difference.

Genocide in Palestine. Getty image.

Media can be held responsible for genocide

Members of the media were convicted of the crime of "incitement of genocide" in Rwanda, and could be held responsible for incitement of genocide in Palestine, writes Mondoweiss.

"Today, CNN, Fox, BBC, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal know what they are doing."

When the radio, TV, and newspaper personalities were sentenced for the crime of incitement of genocide in Rwanda, the judge said, “You were fully aware of the power of words, and you used the…medium of communication with the widest public reach to disseminate hatred and violence…Without a firearm, machete or any physical weapon, you caused the death of thousands of innocent civilians.”

Progress in technology has created many wonders, and monsters, like copy and paste journalism in the digital age, filled with cracks and holes. Historic photo: Miehle flat-bed cylinder press.

The Plagiarism Factories

While journalists are assassinated in Palestine, many 'reporters' in the U.S. are manufacturing news from their easy chairs, relying on a mix of plagiarism, rewrites and phone calls to deceive readers that they are out covering the news.

In this lazy man's factory, the latest scam in Indian country is calling "partnering."

What this really means is that the reporters who rarely leave their easy chairs use the hard work of reporters who actually do, and they're good at writing grants. The easy chair media put their own names on the articles, which are written by others, and promote themselves on social media.

At the journalism factory of plagiarism, the media masters are receiving $100,000 and one million dollar grants -- and still do not have reporters actually out covering Indian country.

It is a copy and paste industry -- and their stories are filled with holes.

Reporters throw facts together in a sort of mix master, relying on spin from politicians and public relations masters, and top it off with a phone call interview.

Journalists must live their code of ethics. And editors and publishers must honor those who dedicate their lives to the art and craft of journalism.

Echoing the words of the judge in the Rwanda genocide, “You were fully aware of the power of words."

Interior Sec. Deb Haaland spoke about protecting the planet at the Democratic National Convention -- apparently forgetting her support for lithium mining into the Paiute Massacre Site Peehee Mu'huh in Nevada, and the fact that she is being sued by three Native American Tribes in Arizona for destroying the sacred.

“Let me go back to a lesson I learned in the deserts of the Southwest. We all have a role in protecting our earth for future generations," Haaland, Laguna Pueblo, told the DNC on Thursday.

In a bizarre twist, attorneys for the U.S. government said an Australian company has to drill into Hualapai's Ceremonial Place because it is necessary for "green energy transition." A federal judge ruled otherwise and halted the drilling for lithium with a temporary restraining order.

The head of a Navajo tribal enterprise had already rushed in and agreed to head up the drilling into the sacred. On Monday, Hualapai defenders began an encampment to protect their sacred land and water.

PHOENIX, Arizona — A federal district court judge has granted a temporary restraining order sought by the Hualapai Tribe to freeze a lithium drilling operation that is endangering their lands, including a sacred medicinal spring called Ha’Kamwe’ in the Big Sandy River watershed. The Tribe, represented by Earthjustice and Western Mining Action Project, sued the Interior Department and the Bureau of Land Management earlier this month, after the federal agencies approved a plan to drill over 100 holes reaching depths of 360 feet into the aquifer that feeds Ha’Kamwe’.

Duane Clarke, Chairman of the Hualapai Tribe, said: “Today our people celebrate the granting of the temporary restraining order, but understand our fight is not over. We will continue to bring awareness to the protection of our water.”

Deb Haaland, Laguna Pueblo, is now being sued by three tribes in Arizona for ongoing destruction of religious and historic places, sacred places where Tohono O'odham, San Carlos Apache, and Hualapai have offered their prayers since time immemorial.
