Greta Arrives in Greece, Decries the Genocide, after Being Abused in Israeli Prison

Greta Arrives in Greece, Decries the Genocide in Palestine, after Being Abused in Israeli Prison

By Brenda Norrell, Censored News, Oct. 6, 2025

Greta Thunberg gives her first words after she was released from Israeli prison where she was beat and forced to kiss the Israeli flag. Greta said the story is not about them, the story is about Gaza.

"I could talk a very, very long time about our mistreatment and abuse in our imprisonment, trust me, but that is not the story."

"I will never comprehend how humans can be so evil. That you would deliberately starve millions of people living trapped under an illegal siege as a continuation of decades and decades of suffering suffocation, oppression and apartheid," Greta said, after 161 flotilla members arrived in Athens today.

"Israel is escalating genocide and mass destruction with genocidal intent, attempting to erase an entire population in front of our eyes."

Greta said Israel is continuing this genocide, mass destruction, and violated international law by preventing humanitarian aid from getting into Gaza -- while people are being starved. She said what is needed is an end to the occupation.

"That is what this story is about."

"We cannot take our eyes away from Gaza."

"What we are doing is the very minimum." Greta said our governments, institutions, companies and the media are fueling this genocide.

"What we have to do is end that complicity."

"That this mission has to exist is a shame!" she added, urging the world to act to prevent Israel's genocide of the Palestinians.

"We are not even seeing the bare minimum from our governments."

"Let me be very clear. There is a genocide going on," Greta told the crowd at the Athens airport referring to Israeli military action in Gaza.

"Our international systems are betraying Palestinians. They are not even able to prevent the worst war crimes from happening," she said.

"What we aimed to do with the Global Sumud Flotilla was to step up when our governments failed to do their legal obligation."

"This mission should not have to exist and it is a shame that the Global Sumud was the biggest ever attempt to break Israel's illegal and inhumane siege by sea."

Greta: Leaders Fueling Genocide Do Not Represent Me

"And it is a story of global international solidarity. of people stepping up when our governments failed to do so. Of people saying that my leaders, so-called leaders who are supposed to represent me, who continue to fuel a genocide, death an destruction, they do not represent me."

"And this is a last resort that this mission has to exist. It's a shame. It
is a shame."

"We are not heroes," Greta said, responding to the crowd. "We are doing the bare minimum."

The grandson of Nelson Mandela, Mandla Mandela is among the flotilla members still imprisoned in the Ktzi'ot prison in Israel's Negev desert.

French Member of European Parliament Beaten in Prison

Rima Hassan, Member of European Parliament, arrived at Athens airport after being deported there, and spoke about the mistreatment and assaults they endured inside the Israeli prisons.

“I was beaten by two policemen."

“We are extremely frustrated that we were unable to break the blockade in our mission that aimed to break the blockade.”

“They hit me while putting me in the van,” she said. “There were times when 13 to 15 of us were packed into a cell, with no beds — just thin mattresses on the floor. We lacked everything — no lawyer, no doctor, no shower, no access outside," YNet News reports.

Former Barcelona Mayor Colau said upon returning to Spain that outside her cell yard hung a large photo of bombed-out Gaza with Arabic text reading “Welcome to the new Gaza.”

She described the facility as belonging to a “fascist state,” adding, “We asked for a doctor — and they told us that’s for human beings.”

Italian journalist Saverio Tommasi told The Guardian he was “beaten from the moment we arrived at port until the end. They hit my back and head, laughing all the while. Anyone who didn’t look down was struck in the head.”

Rima Hassan and others of the French nationals on the Global Sumud Flotilla crew are free after being illegally arrested and detained by Israel, according to live reports from the airport in Athens, Greece.

Second U.S. Citizen Released of 23 Imprisoned

"My name is Greg Stoker, I'm a U.S. citizen and journalist with Mint Press News," Greg said in a video just released as he returns home to Austin, Texas.

"During the past five days we were kidnapped in international waters and taken to a terrorist detention camp in the middle of the Negev Desert, no one knew where we are," Greg said today, Monday, Oct. 6. Greg said that all of their medications and clothes were taken from them.

Australians abused in prison

Surya McEwen said "he was treated much rougher and forcefully, including being slapped, having his arm dislocated and having his head slammed into the ground."

McEwen's passport had been "destroyed", given he said "Israeli soldiers tore up pages of his passport in front of him while on his vessel" because they said the "passport was microchipped".

Another of the reports, believed to be regarding Juliet Lamont, outlined allegations she had been "sprayed with a water cannon, and left to sit in an unventilated area with her hands tied and clothes soaked for 7 hours".

Flotilla Members Land in Greece from Brutal Prison

Greece’s foreign ministry says 161 nationals from 16 European countries landed in Athens on Monday after being expelled by Israel for taking part in a Gaza aid flotilla.

Greta was on the Greece-bound plane, while another ten flotilla activists were deported from Israel to Slovakia.

“A special repatriation flight landed safely in Athens carrying the 27 Greek citizens who took part in the Global Sumud Flotilla," the Greek foreign ministry said in a statement.

Flotilla Flights to Greece and Slovenia Today

BREAKING: 171 Global Sumud Flotilla participants, including Greta Thunberg, have been deported to Greece and Slovakia. These heroes stood for Gaza — and the world is watching, She was held in a filthy, insect-infested cell. The same cells Palestinian detainees are kept in while being tortured. Images were shared by Israel’s MFA, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, before deportation," flotilla said today.

Those released are citizens of Greece, Italy, France, Ireland, Sweden, Poland, Germany, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Austria, Luxembourg, Finland, Denmark, Slovakia, Switzerland, Norway, the UK, Serbia, and the United States.

Spain says it will take a preemptive step by filing a complaint before the ICC over the Sumud Flotilla incident. “Any attack on individuals in international waters is a violation of both domestic and international law and the right to freedom.”

Greta Thunberg, who came to Standing Rock in 2019 to support Water Protectors, is shown here detained by Israel after being abducted in international waters on the Global Sumud Flotilla. Swedish officials said she is dehydrated from the lack of water and food in prison. Arriving in Turkey now, Turkish activists describe the brutal abuse of Greta by Israel.

Flotilla Members Arrive in Turkey, Describe Israel's Abuse of Greta Thunberg

By Censored News, Oct. 6, 2025 Updated

The Global Sumud Flotilla said 29 more participants were released today, Sunday,  and flown to Spain, according to the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The released activists include citizens of Spain, Portugal, and the Netherlands. So far, Greta Thunberg has not been released.

Flotilla members arriving in Turkey yesterday said they drank water from the toilet, women were imprisoned in dog cages, and they were woke up at night by snipers and German Shepherds, with Israelis screaming, "We're going to shoot you." Their medicines were thrown away, Flotilla participants said in Instanbul upon arrival.

Greta Thunb erg was treated the worst, and dragged by hair and abused. She remains in the violent Ktzi'ot prison in the Negev desert in Israel. Nelson Mandela's grandson is also imprisoned.

The first group of 137 from the Global Sumud Flotilla arrived in Turkey yesterday, and were greeted with bouquets of flowers in Instabul, most were Turkish and Malaysian.

There were 470 illegally arrested in international waters. Only one U.S. citizen was released. Families say the U.S. State Dept. is not acting. The condition and location of the U.S. veterans is unknown.

Windfield Beaver of California arrived in Turkey and described Israel's abuse of Greta Thunberg, Reuters reports.

Ayçin Kantoglu said the women were kept in a dog shelter, denied food for three days, forced to drink toilet water, and that Greta was "beaten, had an Israeli flag tied to her back, and was paraded around the room with her hands tied behind her back."

"The Israelis tormented Greta Thunberg, dragged her on the ground, and made her kiss the Israeli flag," said Turkish journalist and Sumud Flotilla activist Ersin Celik arriving in Turkey now.

“They dragged Greta by her hair, beat her, and forced her to kiss the Israeli flag — all in front of us. They wanted to make an example."

Greta Thunberg, who came to Standing Rock to support Water Protectors in 2019, was shackled and treated brutally.

Malaysian activist Hajwani Helmi said, “It was unbearable — they treated us like animals,” said Helmi, adding that detainees were denied food, clean water, and medicine throughout their detention.

A 70-year-old Scottish woman, arriving in Turkey with a broken leg, said she was given no food or water in prison, and the guard slammed a metal door on her broken leg.

"That prison was awful," said Margaret Pacetta from Glasgow upon arrival at the airport in Turkey.

Another woman arriving in Turkey said mothers had written the names of their children in blood on the prison walls.

"They locked us in animal cages."

"Walls had writings in blood in Arabic 'drink from the toilet."

"We were starved for 40 hrs."

An Australian man's family reports that Surya’s family was updated by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, DFAT, on the conditions of those imprisoned: "Subjected to threats of sexual abuse; Physically assaulted, including being pushed, shoved, and having his head forcefully struck against a concrete surface; Exposed to ongoing intimidation, including yelling and verbal abuse; Provided with water that had an unusual taste, raising concerns of possible tampering or drugging."

This treatment violates multi international laws.

Iylia Balqis, a 28-year-old activist from Malaysia, said Israel's interception of the boats was "the worst experience".

"We were handcuffed (with hands behind our backs), we couldn't walk, some of us were made to lie face down on the ground, and then we were denied water, and some of us were denied medicine," she said. She was in the delegation of Malaysians who were released and was returning home.

As many as 137 people from the humanitarian flotilla, including 36 Turkish and 23 Malaysian citizens, arrived by the flight, AA reports.

Kieran Andrieu, whose father is Palestinian, said, “Israel tried to put us in prisoner clothes, but we were not prisoners; we were captains, we were hostages.

“That’s what Israel does to Palestinians every single day.”

Andrieu described harsh conditions in Israeli captivity, including denial of essential medicine.

“Yesterday night we were shouting that possibly someone was having a heart attack. They didn’t come. They didn’t care. They gave us food that was infested with insects. They subjected some people to torture.”

“If this is how Israel behaves towards Europeans, you can only imagine how it treats Palestinians every single day,” he added.

British Activist: 'I saw Gaza'

“We nearly made it. I saw Gaza," British activist Sarah Wilkinson, 62, said after deportation. She was 37 miles from Gaza when her boat was seized by Israeli forces. She was happy to have seen Gaza. “I hope they saw us.”

(Above) Turkish activist from the Sumud Flotilla speaks out:

"Israelis prevented us from having medicine, they only gave us water after 32 hours. We barely had any food. We were woken up at 3 in the morning with dogs and snipers walking into our rooms, they woke us up every 2 hours to prevent us from sleeping."

"They did this to us, innocent citizens, it could only let us imagine what they do to Palestinians." link

An Italian Italian journalist released Sunday, abducted from the flotilla, describes how Israeli prison guards unleashed dogs into cells, poured bleach on mattresses, and overcrowded cells such that it was impossible to lie down.

Novara Media reports now that 9 of the 13 British arrested are arriving in Instanbul on a charter flight, including its reporter Kieran Andrieu.

"36 Turkish nationals were also deported, 23 Malaysians, 26 Italians, 6 Algerians, 10 Tunisians, 7 Libyans, 4 Moroccans, 2 Kuwaitis, 2 Jordanians, 9 Swiss citizens and one person from each of Mauritania, the United States and Bahrain," Novara Media reports.

"Novara Media understands this means that 321 people remain in detention. Adalah, the legal centre in Israel that is providing lawyers to detainees, said this morning that conditions may be worsening for some people inside Ketziot prison, with reports emerging of mistreatment and violence."

CBS reports Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu directly approved military operations on two vessels early last month that were part of a Gaza-bound flotilla carrying aid and pro-Palestinian supporters.

"Two American intelligence officials briefed on the matter told CBS News that Israeli forces on Sept. 8 and 9 launched drones from a submarine and dropped incendiary devices onto the boats that were moored outside the Tunisian port of Sidi Bou Said, causing a fire. The officials spoke under the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on national security matters.

"Under international humanitarian law and the law of armed conflict, the use of incendiary weapons against a civilian population or civilian objects is prohibited in all circumstances." Continue reading:

Israel said on Friday flotilla members will spend nights in violent Ketziot prison before being deported.

Israel said a total of 470 activists were processed by more than 600 Israeli police officers, prison and immigration officials at Ashdod port by Thursday evening. However, UK families said their government told them that Israel would not start deportations before Sunday or Monday, meaning activists could be expected to spend a number of nights in Ketziot prison.

Israel's Minister of National Security Ben Gvir attacked the activists detained from the Sumud Flotilla ships before their transfer to Ketziot Prison, shouting repeatedly: "You are terrorists." -- Eye on Palestine reported.

The Sumud Flotilla said if those arrested do not sign the "immediate departure request," they could spend up to 72 hours -- three days -- in Israeli prison. The document would restrict their rights. They were denied food and water yesterday, the flotilla said.

Novara Media reports today that
Israeli soldiers forced Global Sumud Flotilla participants to kneel on the ground with their hands zip-tied for at least five hours after they were detained while attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, their lawyers have said.

"Adalah, a humanitarian organisation based in Haifa, said a team of lawyers had met with 331 of the 462 people who had their boats illegally seized by Israeli forces while in international waters on Wednesday and Thursday."

In a report published on Friday, Adalah said participants' rights had been “systematically violated” in Israeli detention, even before they were transferred to Ketziot, the notorious prison where they are now being held.

"Detainees were denied basic necessities like drinking water, access to toilets and medication, Adalah said, as well as legal representation.

"Lawyers waited outside Ashdod Port for nine hours on Thursday, Adalah said, while Israeli authorities denied them entry and instead began illegally processing cases and conducting hearings inside without them," Novara Media reports.

The legal counsel for the Global Sumud Flotilla said families are not being told the condition and location of family members. Further, the attorney said incarcerating humanitarians in the violent Ketziot prison violates international law.

Indigenous women, the grandson of Nelson Mandela, Greta Thunberg, U.S. citizens, U.S. veterans, members of the European Parliament, a Brazilian Congresswoman, and delegations from Mexico and Malaysia are among those illegally arrested in international waters. In Palestine: “Maybe they will prevent it from reaching here but it reached our hearts, and we feel it," said a Palestinian on a rooftop watching for the flotilla.

A voice from Palestine: You reached us before they could stop you, you reached us when you risked your lives for us. "Your capture today is a badge of honor added to your history and proof that you chose the path of dignity."
"You have proven that Gaza is not alone, and there are still hearts that beat for freedom."

Mexico's President Demands Release of Delegation

Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum on Thursday demanded the "immediate repatriation" of six Mexicans Israeli authorities took into custody after intercepting a flotilla that attempted to deliver aid to Gaza.
The message to the State of Israel was unequivocal: The Mexicans who were detained in the Global Sumud flotilla must be handed over; the humanitarian aid must reach Gaza; the harassment of Gaza and the genocide being committed by Israel must stop. link

Flotillas Still Sailing. The Mohawk Warrior and Anishinaabe flags still fly above the Conscience in the Freedom Flotilla, now off shore from Greece. The Thousand Madleens are sailing. Today, more than 40 boats left Turkey in solidarity with the Global Sumud Flotilla. "This Warrior Flag was actually at Standing Rock," said Mskwaasin Agnew, Cree Dene aboard the Freedom Flotilla to Gaza. This flag also flew at the Wet'suwet'en's Gidimt'en Checkpoint. Mskwaasin also brought an Anishinaabe flag that flew at 1492 Land Back Lane at Six Nations.

Israel is firing water cannons at activists in small boats as they try to break its illegal blockade of Gaza.

At least two boats have defied Israeli commandos' instructions to stop and carried on sailing past an Israeli blockade.

They are believed to be within 60 nautical miles of Gaza.

Ewa Jasiewicz, an activist on board sailing yacht All In, shown in this video, told Novara Media her boat was “still sailing”.

Earlier on Wednesday evening, another boat, Meteque, said it was told over the radio to switch off its engine or be hit with a water cannon. It did not stop.

Greta and her sturdy flotilla colleagues are seasoned activists, wise educators. People everywhere should take note, not least of all the young among us. As Greta conveys, the salient story remains as before: the destruction of a homeland and the genocide of its people, the complicity of world "leaders" and the resilience of the Palestinian people. Aho! And Courage!
