Mexico's Ministry of Defense spied on the Zapatistas' Journey for Life through Europe, hacktivists reveal. Mexico's military contacted governments in Belgium, Spain, Luxembourg, Austria, and Italy as Mexico stalked the Zapatistas.

However, Mexico's Ministry of Defense was apparently primarily concerned with its own image, and the president's image. Mexico's Embassy in Switzerland engaged in the spying. Besides being concerned with its image, Mexico was focused on whether the Zapatistas would oppose the Mayan Tren, the train being built through the Yucatan, which they do oppose, and details of the missing and murdered 43 students in Guerrero.

The massive leak was by hacktivists Guacamaya.

Most of the photos in Mexico's military spy files were already placed on the web by the Zapatistas on their website. The leaked files reveal the Mexican military relied heavily on social media posts as it spied on Zapatistas and their supporters.

Photos from Zapatistas website, many were placed in the Mexican military's spy files.

As the Zapatistas toured Europe, the photos and gatherings they shared became less frequent after they were in Italy, as surveillance increased.

Milenio media provides more details of Mexico's spying on Zapatistas during their  Journey for Life in Europe in 2021.
