'We have to show the images' -- Amy Goodman remembers Standing Rock
By Brenda Norrell, Censored News, June 28, 2025
Amy Goodman remembered LaDonna Brave Bull Allard and the attack with dogs on Standing Rock water protectors, during today's Global Women's Assembly for Climate Justice. The producer of Democracy Now! is among 125 women speaking during six days.Amy remembered LaDonna inviting others to join her at Standing Rock in the resistance to Dakota Access Pipeline, and describes how thousands came from all around the world.
"They talked about 'Water is Life.'
Amy describes how on Labor Day weekend in 2016, six bulldozers came to dig up the sacred place, and how women and girls stood in front of those earth-crushing bulldozers, risking their own lives, and the bulldozers had to pull back. Then the pipeline guards brought in attack dogs.
"They were biting them -- they were macing them."
Ultimately the people didn't stop. "The people triumphed."
Democracy Now showed the blood dripping from the dogs' mouths, covered in blood. Within twenty-four hours, there were 14 million views.
"Because people cared."
North Dakota authorities issued an arrest warrant for Amy -- for showing those images.
"Hearing people speaking from their own experience -- there is nothing more powerful," Amy said.
Amy describes the racism and execution of activists in Nigeria battling Shell in 1995, which destroyed peoples lives with pollution, and the racism resulting in the lynching murder of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old African American boy, who was abducted, tortured, and murdered by a white mob in Mississippi in August 1955. Emmitt's mother made the decision for the world to see her son and the ravages of racism. The immigration raids now are like none before, with masked ICE raids, Amy said, pointing out that people are leaving their countries. "We are most responsible for climate change."
'Who is historically the worst polluter? The United States," Amy said.
"We have to show the images."
"The majority are on the side of justice."

Amy Goodman broadcasts from North Dakota court while facing riot charges:
We broadcast live from Mandan, North Dakota, across the street from the Morton County Courthouse, where more than a half-dozen people will appear in court today on charges related to the ongoing resistance to the construction of the $3.8 billion Dakota Access pipeline. At least three people are due in court today on felony charges after locking themselves to heavy construction equipment. Morton County also issued an arrest warrant for Democracy Now!’s Amy Goodman on September 8, five days after we released our on-the-ground video report from Labor Day weekend showing the Dakota Access pipeline company’s security guards physically assaulting nonviolent, mostly Native American land protectors, pepper-spraying them and unleashing attack dogs, one of which was shown with blood dripping from its nose and mouth. The original charge against Goodman was criminal trespass, but due to lack of evidence, State’s Attorney Ladd Erickson has filed a new charge against Goodman: “riot.” If Judge John Grinsteiner approves the new riot charge, she will be appearing in court today at 1:30 p.m. CT to challenge it.
