PUERTO PENASCO, Sonora, Mexico -- Salt is sacred to the Tohono O'odham people. Hundreds of years ago, their ancestors made long pilgrimages through the desert of northwestern Mexico to obtain this essential element for their culture. Either to ensure the preservation of the meat they hunted or to be able to celebrate their rituals, they walked for weeks towards the salt flats that are close to the seashore, in the area that we now know as the Upper Gulf of California. In 2023, the transmission lines that are part of the Mexican government's ambitious solar energy generation project will be installed in these salt flats: the photovoltaic plant that seeks to be the largest in Latin America.

GENEVA -- The United States and Canada are among the top countries violating the human rights of Indigenous Peoples, with mining companies based in the U.S. and Canada linked to assassinations of Native people around the world, Indigenous told the United Nations Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

The United States is responsible for accelerating the crimes against humanity with its endless war, resulting in the deaths of millions of innocent people, which benefits its war manufacturers.

Canada's long history of abuse of Native people includes the mandate for churches to seize Native children from their families and institutionalize them in residential schools, resulting in abuse, torture and murder, and generations of trauma. The Pope confirmed the Catholic Church was responsible for the genocide of Native people in 2022. Currently, Mohawk Mothers in Montreal are monitoring the search for graves at McGill University, the site of a CIA torture site.

MNN. Aug. 7, 2023. On the “Indigenous lead” site where the unmarked burial of indigenous children are being sought at the New Vic site, McGill and SQI Security are refusing to hire a professional Indigenous security firm. The “cultural monitors” and elders working alongside the archaeological work crew were attacked by SQI & McGill security and now the indigenous refuse to return to work until their safety is guaranteed.  Also, SQI wants to interpret the GPR Report that found ‘anomalies of remains in the GEOSCAN Report, a private company. SQI & McGill have terminated the Tripartite Panel that was set up by Quebec Superior Court to oversee the search for the children, to start working on the Roy Vic Project. The court needs to uphold its orders. .SQI & McGill do not have the expertise to interpret the findings, which needs to be done by competent archaeological forensic experts. One of the members of the Panel has quit and another states that the anomaly found by GEOSCAN is a burial site and SQI cannot determine that. This could prejudice all GPR searches that are carried out in Canada by indigenous people.

 The Kahnistensera (Mohawk Mothers) are deeply concerned about the recent actions of McGill University and the Société Québécoise des Infrastructures’ (SQI) in the archaeological search for unmarked burials at the New Vic site. Despite publicly stating their support for the court-ordered process and commitment to reconciliation, McGill and SQI have unilaterally terminated the panel’s Que. ordered mandate. They also did not follow through on several recommendations in the Settlement Agreement signed in April 2023 and homologated in the Quebec Superior Court.
