In response to the Nov. 18 editorial, “Biden taking long-overdue steps to reverse neglect of Indigenous people”: The president has not taken action to create a reservation guaranteed by law for the benefit and protection of the Western Shoshone people, authorized by Congress in Article 6 of the Treaty of Ruby Valley.

The Shoshone people are denied our right to self-determination, title and interest in our own property. Shoshone ranchers were blamed by the Bureau of Land Management for range destruction caused by nuclear weapons testing. Radioactive fallout caused the Shoshone people adverse health consequences significantly higher than other Americans documented in our research, “The Assessment of Radiation Exposures in Native American Communities from Nuclear Weapons Testing in Nevada, March 2000 Risk Analysis.” Our research is the basis for contentions in Yucca Mountain licensing by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission that stopped the $15 billion project.

Thank you for the opportunity to comment on the proposed revisions to the regulations implementing the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) issued by the Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) in 2020. In our view the 2020 revisions are a move in the wrong direction because they reduce public input and analysis that is needed, especially for front line communities living near federal projects and energy development. 

 

My name is Lisa DeVille.  I am an enrolled citizen of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara nation.  I and my family are lifelong residents of Mandaree on Fort Berthold Reservation in North Dakota.  We live in the front lines of the Bakken oil and gas extraction where we witness the health, environment, and social impacts.  I am co-founder of Fort Berthold Protectors of Water Earth Rights, an affiliate to Dakota Resource Council.

Land and water in the Southwest United States, and south of the Arizona border in Sonora, Mexico, is now targeted for lithium mining.

Hawkstone Mining posted this map on its website showing targeted lithium mining sites.

Hualapai said the next stage of mining exploration would surround tribal land and affect cultural sites and block access to the oasis for desert wildlife.

 Exploration drilling is less than 700 ft from the spring.
The proposed mine includes:
- Massive open-pit mine
- Sulphuric acid plant to produce acid for extracting lithium from clay
- Slurry line to transport material from the mine to Kingman 50 mi away
- Pumping groundwater for the slurry line and the extraction process
- 24-hour lights + noise

TONOPAH, Nevada -- A massive lithium mining deal was being kept secret when Paiute Shoshone Journalist Myron Dewey made his final warning about lithium mining in Nevada. Dewey was killed in a head-on collision the day after he live-streamed and warned of the dangers of both the Navy's bombing range here, and lithium mining.

The company now admits that the lithium deal near Tonopah in Nye County was being kept secret and that lithium mining is considered gold, as the demand for lithium for batteries increases for electric cars, cellphones and laptops.

SPOKANE, Washington -- In Spokane, Washington, on Wednesday, November 17, 2021, Colville tribal member Maddesyn George was sentenced in federal court to serve 6.5 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter and drug possession with intent to distribute.

Maddesyn is a sexual violence survivor who defended herself in July 2020 against a white man named Kristopher Paul Graber who raped and threatened her. The prosecutors in the case, stunning in their commitment to punish Maddesyn for her survival actions, argued that she be sentenced to 17 years behind bars.

The CAJ says both journalists are still in custody.

McGill University said Monday it is ready to cooperate with governments and Indigenous leaders to explore whether there are any unmarked graves of Indigenous children on the property of the former Royal Victoria Hospital.

Kahentinetha, 81, one of the group’s organizers, said she was pleased that McGill is ready to co-operate in the search. But she said her group must oversee the investigation.

“If we find anything, then all of McGill has to be declared a crime scene,” she said.

Kahentinetha said that McGill was built with money stolen from a trust fund for First Nations people, was “run by the military” and produced weapons used against the Palestinians.

She claimed that healthy children were taken from Kahnawake and given lobotomies at the Allan Memorial Hospital but said their identities must remain a secret.

When Nemonte Nenquimo returned to her homeland in the Amazon, it was as a Warrior Woman, shedding the capitalism and poverty she saw in the city. Now, Nemonte leads the challenge, as the pristine Amazon is attacked by oil companies and left vulnerable and unprotected by Ecuador's president.

The Goldman Environmental Award winner from the Amazon Rainforest brought her message to the opening of the Bioneers Conference on Thursday.

"I am a Waorani woman, community leader," Nemonte says during the video presentation filmed in her Amazon homeland. "Without territory, there are no Waorani."

Bioneers Conference Features Native Speakers Nov. 11 -- 13, 2021

'Between Worlds: Emergence in an Emergency,' this year's Bioneers Conference 2021 begins Thursday, Nov. 11, and continues through Saturday, Nov. 13.

The virtual conference features Indigenous land and water defenders from throughout the Americas, from the Amazon to the north.

Nemonte Nenquimo presents the keynote address on Thursday, 'Indigenous Guardianship is Key to Halt the Climate Crisis.'

Native speakers and comedians are among those at the virtual three day conference.

Naelyn Pike, Apache youth defender of sacred Oak Flat, and Jackie Keliiaa, Yerington Paiute and Washoe comedian, writer and producer, are among the presenters.

Nick Estes, Lower Brule Lakota from South Dakota and assistant professor at the University of New Mexico, is among the Native speakers on Saturday. Estes is on the panel, "Indigenous Pathways to a Regenerative Future."

The conference includes Native interactive workshops, and Native film screenings. 'Reflection: A Walk with Water,' is the first of the conference films and screens on Thursday evening.

This is the full motion filed by the kanistenrsera mohawk mothers in the Federal Court of Canada on Nov. 9, 2021 and served on the four parties.  In addition to our b rief we have filed a motion of application to the Federal Court of Canada T-1696-21.  The Affidavit of Service has been served to all parties. 

THE FOLLOWING ARE EXCEPTS OF THE KANISTENERA’S CONCERNS:

IT IS ON MOHAWK LAND AND IROQUOIS AND GENERAL  INDIAN TRUST FUNDS WERE BORROWED TO BUILD THE SCHOOL, WHICH WERE NEVER REPAID. ONLY MOHAWKS CAN PERMIT ANYTHING TO BE DONE TO THEIR LAND.
