The Native Community Action Council (NCAC) takes no position on Nevada’s filing at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to restart the suspended Yucca Mountain proceedings. As a party with standing in the Atomic Safety Licensing Board Panel (ASLBP) of the NRC, the NCAC made the only ownership contention, a requirement of 10 CFR 60.121 to protect Shoshone land and people. Yucca Mountain is within the homelands of the Western Bands of the Shoshone Nation of Indians defined by the 1863 Treaty of Ruby Valley (Consolidated Treaty Series Volume 127-1863).

NCAC member Joe Kennedy stated, “Stopping Yucca Mountain is the right thing to do to protect the Western Shoshone, all people and life around Yucca Mountain from radiation risk posed by high-level nuclear waste.”

Deaths and uncontrolled spread from COVID continue in the Navajo Nation, while Biden says the pandemic is over

COVID-19 continues to claim lives in the Navajo Nation. Five Dineh died from the virus in the past 7 days. There is an uncontrolled spread of COVID in 31 Navajo communities, the Navajo Department of Health reports.

Nationwide, there is an average of 355 deaths from the virus each day, CDC data shows. Indian Health Service data shows the spread continues in regions of Indian country.

President Biden said Sunday the pandemic is over.

“We still have a problem with covid,” Biden said on 60 Minutes on Sunday. “We’re still doing a lot of work on it … but the pandemic is over.”

Leonard Peltier sent a heartfelt message to walkers on Leonard Peltier's Walk to Justice, which was read at the Madison Wisconsin rally on September 17th, 2022.

Imprisoned for 46 years, Peltier expressed his love and thankfulness to the walkers, and the organizers and spiritual leaders who are making sure walkers are safe physically and spiritually.

Peltier said he is humbled that the walkers have undertaken this journey on his behalf when so many issues deserve national and international attention, including missing and murdered Indigenous women, water and resource protection, the land back movement, and basic human rights.
