The court date for oral arguments to Save the Peaks has been rescheduled AGAIN!
The case has been moved from July 16th to July 20th apparently due to a scheduling conflict the judge had.
While this is another unforeseen challenge we do not view this as a set back. This time we are PROCEEDING with support events planned for July 15th & 16th in Phoenix, AZ. Please come if you can make it.

Flagstaff Events July 16 & 29
Recently the US Department of Agriculture has pushed for Snowbowl to use ground water instead of treated wastewater for snowmaking.
On July 2, 2010 the USDA granted Snowbowl ski resort permission for development including a choice to use either direct sourced treated sewer water for snowmaking or "recovered-reclaimed" (also known as drinking water) water from a Flagstaff City water line. Howard Shanker, representing the Save the Peaks Coalition and additional plaintiffs, filed for a temporary restraining order to block Arizona Snowbowl from moving forward with any ground disturbing activities on the mountain..

Join us on July 29th at 5PM at the Flagstaff City Council Chambers!
On July 29th the Flagstaff City Water Commission will be holding a public hearing to determine whether or not they will approve a contract to sell ground water to Arizona Snowbowl instead of treated sewage effluent.
We are asking you to join us in contacting Flagstaff City Council members and Flagstaff Water Commission members and urge them NOT to approve a new contract to sell Flagstaff's precious drinking water for (but not limited to) the following reasons:
Water is Life! Water is scarce in Northern Arizona.
Water for Flagstaff! Flagstaff's water is needed for its citizens not a private business located outside of Flagstaff's City limits.
Respect Indigenous Peoples ways of life! Indigenous Nations are opposed to snowmaking with groundwater. The Hopi Tribe has historically and consistently been opposed to snowmaking with any kind of water.
The Snowbowl controversy has divided the Flagstaff community. City officials have the opportunity to choose to do the right thing and begin to heal the wounds that they are in part responsible for.
The USDA is offering federal money to the tune of $11 million to help pay for this water. That comes out of our pockets. Don't let them subsidize racism and disrespect.
Water is scarce in Northern Arizona and it should not be treated as a resource for recreation

WATER COMMISSION: The Water Commission consists of nine Council-appointed citizens and a non-voting representative from the Planning and Zoning Commission. On July 4, 2010 with the scheduled implementation of Arizona's SB 1070 approaching on July 29, Roberto Dr. Cintli Rodriguez described community resistance to SB 1070 and HB 2281.

Tucson 30 Minutes features an interview with Roberto Dr. Cintli Rodriguez of the Department of Mexican American Studies and Raza Studies at the University of Arizona to talk about SB 1070 and HB 2281- and community activism in opposition to these recently passed Arizona laws. SB 1070 requires law enforcement officials to make a reasonable attempt to determine the immigration status of a person whenever there is "reasonable suspicion" that the person is unlawfully present. It is scheduled to go in effect on July 29. At the time of this interview on July 4, the ACLU and MALDEF, and other groups and individuals had filed for an injunction against SB 1070. On Tuesday, July 6, the Department of Justice announced that it would also file an injunction against SB 1070.

HB 2281 targets Tucson Unified School District's (TUSD) Mexican American Studies Department by making it illegal to teach classes which foster "ethnic solidarity" or "ethnic chauvinism". It is scheduled to go into effect on January 1, 2011. TUSD officials maintain that they are in compliance with the new law and that students who take Ethnic Studies Department courses perform better than their counterparts.

In resistance to the enforcement of SB 1070, many events are planned in Tucson during July. On each of the first four Fridays of July, Derechos Humanos and other community groups such as No More Deaths, Tucson Samaritans, UA Students Against SB 1070, Tucson May 1st Coalition, International Action Center of Tucson, Tierra Y Libertad Organization - TYLO, We Reject Racism Campaign
Jewish Voice for Peace- Arizona Chapter, Alianza Indígena Sin Fronteras, Restoration Project, Alliance for Global Justice, Tucson YWCA, Calpolli Teoxicalli, We Reject Racism Campaign, Green Valley Samaritans, Corazón de Tucson (Vecinos Unidos Por La Dignidad Humana)are holding rallies in front of the State Building from 4:00-7:00 PM on the corner of Congress and Granada.

On July 13-16, TUSD's Department of Mexican American Studies and the University of Arizona College of Education are holding the 12th Annual Institute for Transformative Education. This four-day conference will provide participants with the opportunity to listen to and dialogue with leading scholars in the areas of: Chicana/o Studies, Cultural Responsiveness, Ethnic Studies, Critical Multicultural Education, Urban Education, Urban Youth Engagement, Critical Pedagogy, and Critical Race Theory in Education.

On the morning of July 13, Calpolli Teoxicalli will lead a run which will begin at 5:30 am at the Old Main at the U of A and continue to the federal building (site of Operation Streamline) on Congress/Granada; then to TUSD Headquarters at 1010 10th Street (Park & 10th) and finally to the Education Building at the U of A for a ceremony. On July 15, the Ethnic/Raza Studies Defense fund will be holding a Noche de Cultura fund raiser at the El Casino Ballroom from 6:00 PM-Midnight. The event features Olmeca, Los Gallegos, Mariachi Nueva Melodia and more.

On July 19, there will be a Latino Solidarity Benefit Concert to benefit Derechos Humanos at the Rialto Theatre featuring the Grammy-nominated Puerto Rican Bomba y Plena group "Los Pleneros de la 21" (Smithsonian Folkways Recording artists); the fierce, feminist Cuban hip hop duo "Las Krudas Cubensi" and the highly acclaimed Mexican Roots band "Los Cenzontles" (whose credits include close collaborators of Los Lobos' David Hidalgo, Ry Cooder, blues master Taj Mahal, and Tucson's own Linda Ronstadt).
