Dec. 19, 2013: Photos by Carl 'Bad Bear' Sampson, Western Shoshone long walker, as the Longest Walk 4 takes those final steps to Alcatraz. The walk arrives in Alcatraz on Dec. 21, with a Sovereignty Gathering at Oakland Friendship House on Dec. 22, 2013. Congratulations to our friends, the long walkers.

Longest Walk, Saturday, December 21 -- The Walk will start at 5:00 AM sharp from the Marin Vista Point of the Golden Gate Bride. From there it will make its way down to Chrissy Field, at Fort Mason it will go up to Bay Street and down Bay Street to Pier 33. The special ferry will leave at 8:20 AM sharp.

December 22, Sunday -- There will be a Gathering at the Intertribal Friendship House in Oakland, CA starting at 10:00AM. There will be a drafting of a Declaration reaffirming the 1978 The Longest Walk Manifesto and supplementing with a Reaffirmation of Indigenous Sovereignty. From 1:00 PM there will be a joint Celebration and Dinner for the Walk and for the Honoring of Bill Wahpepah.

With the death this week of Nelson Mandela, we thought of people like him and John F. Kennedy who really cared about their countries.  Kennedy’s quote “Ask not what your country can do for you, Ask what you can do for your country” is an all-time favorite.

Council Speaker Johnny Naize is facing multiple counts of bribery, and one of conspiracy, relating to the Council’s infamous “slush fund.”  There are also “the usual council delegate suspects” and various others mixed up in this mess according to a recent news release.

We have two cultures here; the Navajo culture and the corruption culture.  The second reaches beyond the Council, to places like the Office of the President. We already know about the deal former delegate Ben Shelly (now President) struck with prosecutors and the court on the same type of slush fund activity.

The embarrassing failure of the U.S. prosecutor in the Three Feathers Casino trial is not a win. It's not even a draw! Surviving the persecution and prosecution of their law enforcement agents, lawyers, judges and juries is a good thing, but it is not justice. It is not justice when someone jams a stick in each of your eyes and his system forces him to pull one out.
