Every year at this time, the Red Water Pond Road Community Association (RWPRCA) of the Navajo Nation in northwestern New Mexico gathers to remember the impacts of the largest release of radioactive waste, by volume, in U.S. history. An estimated 94 million gallons of toxic uranium mill tailings wastewater spilled into the Puerco River from a breach in a dam at the United Nuclear Corp. (UNC) uranium mill on July 16, 1979.

Next week, July 21-24, Western Apaches and their supporters will gather in eastern Arizona to honor Apache holy places by participating in the 31st Annual Mount Graham Sacred Run.

The event was started in 1991 by Dr. Wendsler Nosie, Sr., former San Carlos Apache Tribal Chairman and leader of the nonprofit Apache Stronghold. The four-day-long run and prayer will begin at the Old San Carlos Monument (http://apache-stronghold.com/maps.html ) and will end atop Mount Graham (Dził Nchaa Si An, in the Apache language), a Sky Island oasis surrounded by a “sea” of Sonoran desert.

Remembering Marcos in Magdalena

'They think that they will only poison O’odham and Navajo land. They are going to poison everything and they are going to destroy it.' -- Marcos

Marcos' words seem prophetic now, 15 years later. This week, COVID cases increased 30 percent in the Navajo area, Indian Health Service reports. Also, a large number of activists have contracted the virus in the past six weeks. Meanwhile, a new illness with flu-like symptoms is now causing sickness along the Arizona border. -- Censored News.

Remembering Marcos' words, Ofelia Rivas, Tohono O'odham, said today, "A powerful statement by the Otra Compana and an honor to welcome the Zapatistas elders and spokespeople to O'odham lands, in what is now called Sonora."
