With the World's Peoples Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth in Cochabamba, Bolivia, less than two weeks away, the movement for the Rights of Mother Earth is giving birth to a new revolution. In defense of Mother Earth and honoring the sacredness of life, Indigenous Peoples are ready to hold governments and corporations responsible that poison the earth.

While Indigenous Peoples focus on the defense of the earth, the issues of destruction of the earth, and the targeting of Indigenous Peoples lands for mining, power plants and development, are among the most censored issues in the world media.

In the Climate Summit workshop titled "Referendum" online, the focus is on reestablishing harmony with Mother Earth and recognizing its Rights. Further, it proposes a change of over-consumption of the waste model of the capitalist system.

In its draft document, the Referendum workshop proposes the domestic reduction and absorption of the developed countries greenhouse gases in order to prevent temperature increases of no more than 1º C. It further proposes the transfer of all war expenditures to fund climate change.

The workshop guidelines further ask: "Are you in accordance to create a Climate Justice Tribunal to judge who destroys Mother Earth?"

Conference participants, who are registered, are already at work in workshops online.

Otto Mendoza Portocorrero, president of ONAPROS in Peru, said it is the animals, as well as humans, who suffer because of so-called developed nations. The statement calls for renewable energy and the protection of forests while decreasing greenhouse gases.

Lenny Foster's testimony to the United Nations, delivered to the US State Department in the so-called "Listening Sessions," regarding the imprisonment of Leonard Peltier and religious freedom and spiritual practices in US prisons, is currently among the most censored issues.

Kahentinetha Horn, publisher of Mohawk Nation News, writes in her latest column, "Stop the Trains," about the agents and methods of destruction targeting Indigenous Peoples.
"If the band and tribal councils do not help their masters, there will be unorganized chaos and less of us will be killed or affected. They will discourage resistance, sabotage rescue attempts and coerce us to re-settle. Our lands and properties are probably being promised to them. In the end, they will be put on the same trains with us. The Apache trackers who helped the US army capture Geronimo were all sent to the same prison in Florida."

Mohawk Splitting the Sky and Former US Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney deserve an award for being the most censored in the should-be news department.
McKinney was detained by Canadian immigration enroute to the trial of Splitting the Sky in March. Splitting the Sky was arrested as he attempted to make a citizens arrest of George W. Bush for war crimes. McKinney was unable to testify because of the delay. The trial ended abruptly and Splitting the Sky is now awaiting sentencing. McKinney also spent time in an Israeli jail during her humanitarian efforts to Palestine in 2009.

Aboriginal elders are in Rome holding the Pope responsible for the sexual abuse, torture and murder of Indian children in church-operated residential schools in Canada.
"Lillian Shirt of the Cree Nation and Charles Cook of the Anishinabe-Ojibway Nation will gather with Rev. Kevin Annett and other members of The Friends and Relatives of the Disappeared (FRD) and Italian supporters at a memorial service outside the Vatican in St. Peter's Square on Easter morning, Sunday April 4 at 11 am.
Both of the native elders survived incarceration in Catholic Indian schools in Canada, and witnessed the deaths of other students. "

Congratulations to Ofelia Rivas, founder of O'odham VOICE Against the Wall, selected by the organization Borderlinks in Tucson, along with Teresa Armenta Mendez, to receive this year's award for Women on the Border.
While the Tohono O'odham elected leaders have been coopted by the US Border Patrol and Homeland Security, absorbing wealth while the O'odham people live in desperation, Rivas has been a voice for truth. She has been falsely arrested and abused and held at gunpoint by tribal police and Border Patrol.
Rivas was nominated by Censored News publisher Brenda Norrell.
“Ofelia repeatedly risks her life for the purpose of truth and justice. She has been the voice of grass-roots people on the border and struggled to protect ceremonies and sacred pilgrimage routes that have been divided by the border. She was the lone voice that exposed the destruction of the graves of O’odham ancestors by the construction of the border wall. Most recently, Ofelia served four days in jail in Chiapas for her support of the indigenous rights movement of the Zapatistas."

Back to those so-called US State Department Listening Sessions. Russell Means, Lakota, warns not to be duped by the smokescreen.
"Once again, the occupation government of the United States of America has trotted out its dogs and ponies to provide a smokescreen and diversion from its continuing crimes against the indigenous peoples and nations of the Western Hemisphere. The reason for today’s media spectacle is supposedly for the US State Department to 'listen' to input from indigenous peoples and nations for inclusion in the U.S.’s report to the United Nations Human Rights Council, universal periodic review process."

Defenders of the Land Call Out: Canada G8/G20
Dear Friends and Supporters:
I have the privilege to forward this public Call Out on behalf of the “Defenders of the Land” for support and action regarding Canada hosting the G8/G20 on June 24, 2010. The Defenders are a movement of independent indigenous bodies that defend Aboriginal and Treaty territories from destructive commercial and industrial development.
The G8/G20 does impact on Aboriginal and Treaty Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Canada. Aboriginal and Treaty Rights are the underlying proprietary ownership and jurisdiction of land, water and resources in Canada. The failure of Canada to recognize Aboriginal and Treaty Rights economically forces Indigenous Peoples to live in poverty.

Mohawk Nation News: Stop the Trains

STOP THE TRAINS

Mohawk Nation News
http://www.mohawknationnews.com/

MNN. Mar. 29, 2010. We Indigenous know that we are being monstrously targeted. We are scattered throughout Great Turtle Island. The colonial government is trying to create a reason to remove and scatter us.
Our communities are deliberately being made unviable, unlivable and mismanaged to create weakness, hunger and thirst. Fierce restrictions, cutbacks, no jobs and no economy are being imposed to create hopelessness.
Resettlement is part of the strategy. Many of our people already have been removed to concentration-extermination camp conditions: Mohawk to Wahta, Innu to Labrador and Inuit to the high Arctic. Curfews and passes were imposed. Food and necessities were rationed. Many died. Our children were removed to residential schools. About half were killed.
In 2005 over 60 Australian Aborigine communities were placed under martial law run by the military.
For 500 years European invaders continue the genocide of Indigenous. They control the money, police, government, economy and military.
The corporate media does not expose these atrocities. Communication is controlled. The masses say little.
Many of our people join the aggressors or pacifist cults. Some support Canada and US extermination policies, especially the colonial band and tribal councils. They put down any resistance. They will be heroes for convincing us to go like lambs to the slaughter. Their Indian cops tell us it’s futile to resist and encourage us to be passive.
Our resources are being used to carry out the genocide. Hannah Arendt said that in WW II almost without exception Jewish leaders in Germany and worldwide cooperated with the Nazis to carry out the Jewish holocaust. They designed the camps, targeted resisters, compiled lists to send to the concentration camps, which properties to seize and distributed the yellow star ID badge that Jews had to wear. Their own money paid for their holocaust.
If the band and tribal councils do not help their masters, there will be unorganized chaos and less of us will be killed or affected. They will discourage resistance, sabotage rescue attempts and coerce us to re-settle. Our lands and properties are probably being promised to them. In the end, they will be put on the same trains with us. The Apache trackers who helped the US army capture Geronimo were all sent to the same prison in Florida.
Fascist thugs believe that natural law is based on violence and that brutal force can solve social problems; democracy is the enemy of the people because it inhibits brutality; life is a perpetual struggle for existence. Only the strong and brutal survive; and the world belongs to those who seize and control it. [Hitler: Main Kempf].
Anti-Indian racism, threats to our babies, young men and women are control tactics. Our interrelationship with the natural world must be renewed. Living in identifiable communities is necessary. Solidarity must be created between our families. Trusted supporters must be found.
In the end Hitler’s Jewish police were gunned down: “If you can do this to your own, what would you do to me?” Using our own against us is an old tactic. It‘s harder to resist when our own are trying to help eliminate us.

McKibben: Bless Bolivia for Recharging the Fight to Rescue Our Climate

Bless Bolivia for Recharging the Fight to Rescue Our Climate

(Bill McKibben, Huffington Post) In a week when the American president has decided our energy policy should involve lots more offshore oil drilling, it’s easy to despair–it doesn’t look like it’s going to be much of an Earth Day in the U.S. this April. But maybe we’ll get a jolt of political energy from the south, courtesy of the groups and leaders assembling from across the world in Cochabamba, Bolivia. This People’s Summit on Climate Change will be seen as naive by precisely the kind of people applauding the president for turning on the oil spigots today–after all, its by definition a People’s Summit, free from the kind of corporate interference that helped sink the Copenhagen conference in December (Bolivia’s Supreme Court having not yet decided that corporations are people).Copenhagen was marked by a focus on power politics, not science. Though 117 nations endorsed the 350 ppm co2 target that researchers say is necessary to ward off the very worst effects of climate change, they were the wrong 117–the poor nations, the most vulnerable nations. The real addicts–led by the U.S.–simply weren’t ready to come to terms with their need to dramatically cut emissions, and so the session ended with a whimper, the so-called Copenhagen Accord which promises nothing, enforces nothing, accomplishes nothing.

The failure of those talks does nothing to slow down the progress of climate change, of course. This is a fight between human beings on the one hand, and physics and chemistry on the other–and physics and chemistry don’t really bargain. So glaciers like Bolivia’s Chacaltaya continue to disappear, and Arctic ice to melt, and seawater to acidify. We don’t have all the time in the world–we don’t, in fact, have a moment to spare.

Thank heaven, then, for the nations like Bolivia willing to work alongside civil society (instead of lock normal people out of the hall, as the UN did in Copenhagen). In fact, “work” is the key word for this year. At 350.org, we’re organizing a huge Global Work Party for October 10 (10/10/10!). All over the world, thousands of communities will be putting up solar panels and insulating homes and doing the other things we must do to deal with climate change. Our message is not that we can solve global warming one nice project at a time–we can’t. Instead, our message is: if we can get to work, so can our lawmakers. If we can climb up on the roof and install solar panels, the U.S. Senate can do what it’s supposed to do, and the UN General Assembly, and everyone else who needs to actually get to work.

That process begins in April in Bolivia. The world’s leaders haven’t led, so we’re going to have to lead for them. It’s going to be a fight, and it’s on now.

Bill McKibben is founder of 350.org and author of the first book about global warming, 1989’s The End of Nature.

PERU: Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth

Bolivia Climate Summit: The discussions on the Rights of Mother Earth and Climate Change are already underway online in advance of the Bolivia Climate Summit in virtual workshops for those registered for the conference
By Brenda Norrell
Censored News
http://www.bsnorrell.blogspot.com
With the World's Peoples Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth in Cochabamba, Bolivia, less than three weeks away, Indigenous Peoples are already discussing the vital need to protect the rights of Mother Earth.
The discussion is underway in the Referendum Working Group. Its premise states, "Humanity, the only species in the planet able to decide about its relation with Mother Earth and the possibility to generate discussion and implement activities to preserve this relation, should have the possibility to express through direct opinions, in order to establish for each Government an action plan permitting recovering of the harmony with our Mother Earth."
In the Referendum workshop dialogue, questions are asked to generate responses for a world referendum. The Referendum workshop focus is on reestablishing harmony with Mother Earth and recognizing its Rights; a change of over-consumption of the waste model which is the capitalist system; domestic reduction and absorption of the developed countries greenhouse gases in order to prevent temperature increases of no more than 1º C and the transfer of all war expenditures to more money for climate change. It further asks: "Are you in accordance to create a Climate Justice Tribunal to judge who destroys Mother Earth?"
Otto Mendoza Portocorrero, president of ONAPROS in Peru, offers this statement:
ONAPROS in PERU: WORLD REFERENDUM ON CLIMATE CHANGE
Whereas, some countries will be reluctant to comply with the agreements accomplished during the Conferences, in this particular case during the World People's Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth, to be held on April 19th to 22nd, 2010 in Cochabamba, Bolivia,
Whereas it is a duty of peoples representatives to seek for its peoples interests,
Whereas climate change affects not only human beings but also all animal species, for the ones we must advocate,
Whereas human beings and all alive beings of the world are the ones who suffer climate change consequences,
Whereas the percentage of greenhouse gas emission reductions from countries is not sufficient to avoid an increase in global temperature,
This is related with the defense of life, and due to the lack of support from developed countries to give a solution, through policies seeking for an increase in greenhouse gas emission reductions percentages, which can be achieved through forestation and reforestation by all peoples of the world, and also through the production of clean and renewable energy; in this sense the production of gases causing climate change would be counteracted.
It is a requirement that through the World People’s Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth, President Evo Morales’ proposal is approved by the establishment of a referendum and its questions, so the peoples of the world can make their voices be heard in their votes. This will force developed countries to prioritize climate change issues executing effective gases reduction policies, which will tackle global warming that comes as a consequence of environmental contamination.
Governments will be in charge of the popular consultation to contribute with nature balance.
Arequipa, PERU, February, 2010
Respectfully,
Otto Mendoza Portocarrero
ONAPROS President
