Legendary Attorney Martin Garbus to Speak at Leonard Peltier Event in Manhattan
            Martin Garbus, one of the country's leading trial lawyers, will speak at thek  International Day of Solidarity with Leonard Peltier, Saturday, February 6, from 2-5 p.m. at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Labor Center, 1199/SEIU Auditorium.  The venue is located at 310 West 43 Street in Manhattan.
            Mr. Garbus is the lead attorney for Native American political prisoner Leonard Peltier's legal team.   Mr. Peltier, in prison for almost 40 years for a crime that he did not commit, is seeking Executive Clemency from President Barack Obama, his only hope for freedom. 
            Among his many cases, Mr. Garbus represented the late Peter Matthiessen and Viking Press in the successful battle to publish Mr. Matthiessen's book In the Spirit of Crazy Horse.  He was also an attorney for Gerardo Hernández, one of the now free Cuban 5.
            Also speaking will be Cynthia K. Dunne, formerly Assistant United States Attorney/Senior Trial Counsel in the Office of the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York and now a member of Mr. Peltier's legal team.  A director of Lakota Children's Enrichment, a nonprofit corporation on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, Ms.  Dunne has stated, "It is now time for President Obama to grant Clemency to Leonard Peltier." 
            A Q and A session will follow the speakers.
            On the program there will be performances by the Red Storm Drum and Dance Troupe, Frank Menusan (Muskogee), who plays many ethnic musical instruments including the Native flute, and Laura Ortman (White Mountain Apache) an outstanding instrumentalist who plays violin, Apache violin, and electric guitar, among others.  
            The audience will hear updates and announcements from supporters of other political prisoners, including Mumia Abu-Jamal, the Move 9, Oscar López Rivera, and the Palestinian political prisoners.
            Light refreshments will be served.
            A donation of $5 - $10 is requested, but no one will be turned away due to lack of funds.
