MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota -- Four Oglala Lakota are being detained by ICE in the migrant sweeps in Minnesota. This comes after ICE murdered legal observer Renee Nicole Good, 37, the mother of three and poet, who is originally from Colorado Springs, Colorado, in Minneapolis on Wednesday.

Today, the U.S. Border Patrol shot a man and woman in Portland, Oregon, in the migrant sweeps in a targeted vehicle stop.

Oglala Lakota Illegally Detained by ICE in Minnesota

Oglala President Frank Star Comes Out said, "I have been made aware that ICE (Department of Homeland Security) has detained four of our tribal members in Minneapolis," Star Comes Out said late today.

"The four men are homeless and were living under the bridge near the Little Earth housing project. A bystander (also an Oglala Sioux Tribal Member) was able to get the information out of them that they are members of the Oglala Sioux Tribe but did not get names."

The Oglala Lakota Nation in Pine Ridge, South Dakota, issued a statement for Oglala to identify themselves as U.S. citizens and advised them to make this statement: "Because I am both a tribal citizen and U.S. citizen, ICE has no lawful authority to detain me."

President Frank Star Comes Out pointed out that the Treaties affirm a nation-to-nation relationship with the United States, and advised Oglala not to speak without an attorney present.

Oglala Sioux Tribal attorneys are reaching out to Minnesota Lt. Gov. Flanagan about where the four Lakotas are being detained and what their names are. The Tribal Council and executive officers have also been informed, he said.

Red Lake Chippewa Nation Denounces Noem's Statement

The Red Lake Chippewa Nation issued a strong statement about the murder of Renee Good and denounced the attempt to justify ICE's shooting of Renee Good that was made by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

"Noem characterized the victim's actions as an act of 'domestic terroism," the Red Lake Nation pointed out.

The Mayor of Minneapolis Jacob Frey said this is "bullshit."

In fact, Mayor Frey told ICE to "Get the f--k out of here," the Red Lake Nation points out in its statement.

The Red Lake Nation said there are 2,000 ICE and federal agents in Minneapolis, and the city is being targeted.

"There are 8,000 Red Lake residents currently living in the Twin Cities in the immediate neighborhoods where ICE is presently terrorizing residents," the Red Lake Nation said, expressing deep concern that Ojibwe, known as Chippewa and Anishinaabe, will be abused.

MPR News: U.S. Border Patrol handcuffs school staff, releases chemical weapons at school

Minneapolis Public Schools on Wednesday canceled classes district-wide for the remainder of the week “due to safety concerns,” following the killing of a woman Wednesday by an ICE agent. The district said it was acting “out of an abundance of caution.”

The move came after officials at Roosevelt High School said armed U.S. Border Patrol officers came on school property during dismissal Wednesday and began tackling people, handcuffed two staff members and released chemical weapons on bystanders.

Unicorn Riot media reported on Wednesday, "A vigil for Renee Nicole Good, killed by ICE earlier today, was organized for 5 p.m. at 34th and Portland Ave. Our reporter estimated up to 10,000 people are at the vigil."

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey's Message to federal immigration enforcement

"The City of Minneapolis responded to a fatal shooting involving federal law enforcement that occurred earlier today in the area of East 34th Street and Portland Avenue. City officials are demanding accountability and justice and stressing the need to meet this moment with peace and unity."

“We've dreaded this moment since the early stages of this ICE presence in Minneapolis,” said Mayor Jacob Frey, City of Minneapolis. “This was a federal agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying.”

Shooting timeline

"Just after 9:30 a.m., Minneapolis police officers responded to the reports of shots fired and found a woman with life-threatening gunshot wounds. Minneapolis firefighters then removed the 37-year-old victim from the vehicle and immediately began lifesaving measures until paramedics could respond. She was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center, where she later died."

“To the family of the person who was killed — we are deeply sorry,” said Frey. “There are no words that can make this moment better. Our hearts are with you.”"Mayor Frey condemns th
e actions of federal immigration agents, saying they are only causing more chaos and created this situation.

“ICE — Get the f*** out of Minneapolis,” said Mayor Frey. “We do not want you here. Your stated purpose for being in this City is to create some kind of safety, but you are doing exactly the opposite.”

"City officials emphasized that the federal government must take responsibility not only for the harm caused, but also for preventing further loss of life.

“People are being hurt, families are being ripped apart, long-term Minneapolis residents who have contributed greatly to our city, to our culture, to our economy are being terrorized and now, someone is dead. That’s on you. It’s also on you to leave. It’s on you to make sure that further damage, further loss of life and injury is not done,” said Frey.

“We will pursue justice — and we will do so as quickly as possible,” said Frey.

Unicorn Riot Media: ICE Killing Shocks Twin Cities and Triggers Protests

"Video of the shooting released from the scene shows part of a community rapid response unit that was blowing whistles and witnessing ICE actions on Portland Avenue. In the video, a maroon SUV is seen maneuvering in the street before two ICE agents get out of a truck and yell at the driver of the SUV to “get out of the fucking car” while one appears to attempt to open the door. As the driver of the SUV began driving away from the agents, a single agent standing nearby in the street shot three bullets into the windshield of the vehicle."

Fond du Lac Band Official Update on Recent ICE-Related Events (01/07/26)

Aaniin to our Fond du Lac Band Community,

We want to acknowledge the difficult news coming out of Minneapolis today regarding an ICE‑related shooting. Our thoughts are with all those affected, and we extend our condolences to the families and communities impacted by this incident.

We are also aware of reports on increased ICE activity across the state. Currently, our Chief of Police has confirmed that there is no known ICE presence within the boundaries of our Fond du Lac Reservation community. We will continue to monitor developments closely and share updates if new information becomes available.

We know that many of our Tribal members live, work, and travel throughout Minnesota, including the Minneapolis–St. Paul area where this recent incident occurred. Events like this can create uncertainty no matter where our people are. We want to reassure our community that we are paying close attention to developments across the state and remain committed to the safety and well‑being of our people.

The Department of Homeland Security has stated that Tribal identification cards issued by federally recognized Tribal Nations are valid government‑issued IDs. However, DHS has also acknowledged that recognition of Tribal IDs during ICE encounters can vary depending on an individual agent’s training and awareness. Because of this inconsistency, Tribal Nations across the country are working with DHS to improve guidance and ensure better recognition of Tribal IDs in the field.

Community members may choose to carry identification, including Tribal ID, if they find it helpful, with the understanding that Tribal IDs may not always be immediately recognized by outside agencies. We share this information not to raise concern, but to support awareness and preparedness.

As always, we encourage everyone to stay mindful of their surroundings, check in on relatives and friends who may be affected, and continue to care for one another. Our strength comes from staying connected, informed, and grounded in who we are.
Miigwech for your attention and for supporting one another.
