Debra White Plume: Oglala Lakota arrested at blockade

Oglala Lakota arrested at blockade

WANBLEE, S.D. -- On Monday, March 5 we were called by a lady from Wanblee village that was forced to pull completely off the highway as the huge semi-trucks hauling these enormous pieces of equipment took up the whole highway.

The two trucks were hauling equipment called "treater vessels" from Houston, Texas to Alberta Canada. These treater vessels arrived in Texas in August 2011 from South Korea. The papers the truck drivers gave us say that the treater vessels each were carrying or weighed 229,155 pounds each. The individual value of each vessel is $1,259,593.

The truck drivers said they were given their route by their headquarters in Canada. The route was worked out with the State of South Dakota, according to the truckers. They said they were told by South Dakota that if they go on the route they did they could avoid paying South Dakota the fee of $50,000 per truck, so they came down Highway 44 through Interior, Potato Creek and Wanblee.

Wanblee is where we set our blockade. Oglala Sioux Tribal Vice President Tom Poor Bear was with us. He called state government officials in Pierre and they verified that yes they gave that route to the corporation to cross Indian lands.

Apparently, the treater vessel is used to separate gas and oil and other elements. The device is also used to provide intense heat. Our Black Hills Sioux Nation Treaty Council, along with the Oglala Sioux Tribe, have both passed legislation against the Keystone XL oil pipeline and have adopted the Mother Earth Accord which calls for a moratorium on the tar sands oil mine as destructive to water, Mother Earth, all animals and human beings. Whatever these treater vessels are and where ever they were going, they are much too huge, heavy and hazardous to be on our roads.

There were about 75 people at the blockade. Approximately 20 cars parked in front of the semi-trucks, who were accompanied by about a dozen pickups with flags displaying wide load warnings, etc. They also had their own electric trucks were traveling with them in order to push up the power lines in their path.

The trucks were too enormous to turn around. The tribal police arrested us as we did not want the trucks to proceed across our land. We were told the tribal police were going to escort the heavy haul caravan to the reservation border and direct them to the state highways.

Alex White Plume, Sr. and I, along with Sam Long Black Cat, Andrew Iron Shell, and Terrell Eugene Iron Shell were all arrested by the tribal police. We were all handcuffed and charged with disorderly conduct, as the police said there were no other charges to bring against us. We were taken to Kyle jail.

We stood our ground for our land, our treaty rights, our human rights to clean drinking water and our coming generations. We did this in solidarity with the First Nations people in Canada who are being killed by the tar sands oil mine, which is so big it can be seen from outer space, it is as big as the state of Florida.

OST Vice President Tom Poor Bear and Alex White Plume of the Black Hills Sioux Nation Treaty Council stated they will work together to create enforceable laws that prevent any future heavy hauls of equipment through the Pine Ridge Reservation. President John Steele was in Washington, DC and the tribal council representatives for the Eagle Nest District where Wanblee is located could not be found.

The oldest person on the blockade was Marie Randall. Renabelle Bad Cob in her wheelchair was in the blockade as well. People from the village brought pots of soup, fry bread, cases of water, doughnuts, and coffee. Many stayed and participated in the blockade.

When the tribal police gave a warning to move off the highway or be arrested, five of us refused to give an inch. All five of us were arrested. Tribal attorney Sonny Richards was at the jail in Kyle and he did the paper work necessary to get us all released.

After we were released from the jail, there was a crowd of people waiting for us. They offered us soda pop and cigarettes. Several people had bond money ready to bond us out. They offered us rides home and that was fortunate because we did not have our cars there.

The truck drivers said they did not know they were crossing a Indian reservation, and would let their corporate office in Canada know that this was a route to avoid as there were road blocks set up to stop them.

'Indian Born, American Made,' Art from the inside out

This is what Tucson does best.

In the downtown historic warehouse district tonight, on Saturday night, with great food and fry bread sizzling out back, the Latino art cooperative opened a national Indian arts show.

Beginning with a Yaqui blessing, the Raices Taller 222 Art Gallery welcomed visitors to see the creative works that just arrived from Rosebud, Alaska, New York, Chinle, and just down the road.

Cornelius Gorman's "Grandma and Grandpa with Prince," was among the most striking. Cornelius is the son of Nelson Gorman, longtime Speaker of the Navajo Nation Council, and Eva Gorman of Chinle. Cornelius, now a physical therapist in Tucson and graduate of Chinle High School and NAU, said the acrylic painting is one of the first pieces of artwork he has ever done.

Nearby in the gallery was Lydia Maldonado's "Traditions for the Future," with traditional women pouring water. A remarkable "Eagle" is sculptured out of basketry and wood by Joseph Lopez, Tohono O'odham. There is the haunting face of the young traditional man in "Full Moon Cowboy," by Nocona Burgess from Lawton, Oklahoma.

'Indian Born, American Made'
by David Moreno
Yaqui David Moreno's "Indian Born, American Made," is the signature work of the show, showing two images of a young Yaqui man.
Keith Braveheart
'7 Symbols'

There are also intriguing and whimsical looks at living in traditional and modern worlds. There's a well-lit teepee in the night painting of Jack B. Sabon, Ahtna Athabascan from Copper Center, Alaska. There's the faint glow of a tv inside, and outside, there's a satellite dish and solar panel.

The unique style of Keith Braveheart, Lakota/Isleta Pueblo living in Rosebud, South Dakota, shows the contemporary and traditional in a powerful way. In a folkart style, Natives are shown sitting around a typical table in one painting, and a traditional woman eating with chopsticks in another.

Wallace Begay portrait
"Returning Warriors" shows the remarkable style of Wallace Begay, Dine' from Tolani Lake, Arizona, with newspaper print incorporated into the oil painting of warriors on horseback.

Perhaps the most unforgettable is the painting by Tom Greyeyes, Dine' from Flagstaff. It is "Ma'ii Obama." To see the painting of this coyote, and the many other treasures from Native American artists from across the nation, visit the Raices Taller 222 Gallery at 218 E. 6th St. Call for hours: 520-881-5335 or e-mail at: RaicesTaller222@aol.com

Exhibition runs March 3 – April 14, 2012

Does there need to be a divide between traditional and contemporary Native American art? The current exhibition at Raices Taller, “Indian Born, American Made,” is a challenge to misconceptions of what Native American art should be. This national exhibition spotlights artwork by invited guest artists who are using traditional and contemporary art forms to maintain a sense of tribal and cultural identity in their explorations of contemporary culture.

Cochabamba by Ben Powless, Mohawk
In April 2010, a historical moment occurred.  More than 32,000 people, including Indigenous Peoples, social movements, small farmers and some world governmental leaders, converged in Cochabamba, Bolivia for the World People’s Conference on Climate Change and the Rights of Mother Earth.  Two outcomes of this conference were the Cochabamba Peoples Accord and the Universal Declaration on the Rights of Mother Earth. The Accord and Declaration gave voice to peoples of the world experiencing the effects of climate chaos and its many accompanying issues, including  depletion of freshwater and other natural resources and the problems of food security, poverty and environmental crises, along with the financial meltdown within the United States and globally.

During the Cochabamba world conference, President Evo Morales of Bolivia officially proposed that the United Nations adopt a declaration that recognizes that Nature or “Mother Earth” has certain inherent rights that we humans must respect and defend. The adoption by the United Nations and national and local governments of the Universal Declaration of the Rights of Mother Earth would expand the class of holders of legally rights and would initiate a global process of transformation.
Our prophecies and teachings tell us that life on Mother Earth is in danger and is coming to a time of great transformation. As Indigenous Peoples, we are accepting the responsibility designated by our prophecies to tell the world that we must live in peace with each other and the Earth to ensure harmony within Creation.

Our Indigenous lifeways are the original “green economies.”  This is more than an abstract philosophy. Our Mother Earth is the source of life.  Water is her lifeblood.   The well-being of the natural environment predicts the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual longevity of our Peoples.   Mother Earth’s health and that of our Indigenous Peoples are intrinsically intertwined.  When our homelands are in a state of good health our Peoples are truly healthy.  This inseparable relationship must be respected for the sake of our future generations and for the well-being of the Earth herself.

Alliances are being formed, globally of Indigenous and non-indigenous groups and individuals committed to creating a system of jurisprudence that sees and treats nature and Mother Earth as a fundamental, rights bearing entity. A paradigm, that is based on Indigenous thought and philosophy needs to be forwarded which grants equal rights to nature and which honors the interrelation in all life.

This is the greatest challenge facing humanity in the 21st Century. How do we re-orientate the dominant industrialized societies so that they pursue human well-being in a manner that contributes to the health of our Mother Earth instead of undermining it? In other words – how do we live in harmony with Nature?
A 3 day conference has been scheduled at Haskell Indian Nations University, in Lawrence, Kansas, April 4-6, 2012 with Indigenous Peoples together from the North and Global South to learn more and to have a discourse about this Rights of Mother Earth, Rights of Nature movement.

We invite humanity to come together to improve our collective human behavior so that we may develop a more sustainable world.  We can preserve, protect, and fulfill our sacred duties to live with respect in this wonderful Creation.  We have the power and responsibility for change.
