Wikileaks has released the Kissinger cables and revealed a new document on Wounded Knee sent from the United Nations to the US State Department, written on May 4, 1973.
Photo Chief Leon Shenandoah in Australia 1989
The document is signed by the Iroquois Confederacy, Chief Williams Lazore, Onondaga Chief Lloyd M. Elm, Onondaga Chief Leon Shenandoah, Iroquois Confederation Chief Moses David, Mohawk Nation, and Mad Bear, President of the League of Nations Pan-American Indians of the Tuscarora Nation. The chiefs state they are mediators for a peaceful solution at Wounded Knee.

The unclassified document is an appeal from the Iroquois Chiefs for humanitarian intervention at the Occupation of Wounded Knee, and for the passage of food, water and fuel, medical aid, and access to attorneys to the occupants. It urges the removal of armed forces, and a halt to the media censorship that prevents the telling of the real story of Wounded Knee.

Today, the document is far more. It is a document of human rights that reveals the current crisis for Native Americans, and how little has changed since the Occupation of Wounded Knee in 1973, which was 40 years ago. The Chiefs stated:

WE PARTICULARLY WISH TO BRING TO THE ATTENTION OF THE UN THE TREATMENT OF INDIANS IN GENERAL AND THOSE IN WOUNDED KNEE IN PARTICULAR BY THE US GOVT. WE HAVE FOR A LONG TIME BEEN DEPRIVED OF MANY RIGHTS ENJOYED BY OTHER CITIZENS AND EVEN ALIENS IN THIS COUNTRY.
WE ARE THE ORIGINAL INHABITANTS OF THIS CONTINENT AND WE DO NOT ENJOY THE SAME RIGHTS AS OTHER PEOPLE. WE DEMAND AND ASK YOU ASSISTANCE IN HELPING US ACHIEVE A BETTER TREATMENT OF INDIANS IN THIS COUNTRY ...
Mad Bear

The electronic telegram, which appears in a systematic review in 2005, begins with:

WE ARE THE CHIEFS WHO ARE APPEARING ON BEHALF OF THE IRAQUOIS CONFEDERACY RESPECTFULLY PRESENT OUR PETITION TO YOU HOPING THAT YOU WILL USE YOUR GOOD OFFICES TO ASSIST OUR BESIEGED PEOPLE IN WOUNDED KNEE AND BRING ABOUT A PEACE. WE PARTICULARLY WISH TO BRING TO THE ATTENTION OF THE UN THE TREATMENT OF INDIANS IN GENERAL AND THOSE IN WOUNDED KNEE IN PARTICULAR BY THE US GOVT. WE HAVE FOR A LONG TIME BEEN DEPRIVED OF MANY RIGHTS ENJOYED BY OTHER CITIZENS AND EVEN ALIENS IN THIS COUNTRY ... (read cable below.")

WikiLeaks has published the ‘Kissinger Cables.' It is the largest public release of documents in nearly a year, totaling 1.7 million classified files, including information on the US’s secret diplomatic history.
