Navajos Protest Planned 110-Year Lease for Coal Mine Expansion
Coal Mines, Oil and Gas Methane and Uranium Transport: Deadly Mix on the Navajo Nation
By Dine' CARE, Censored News, July 23, 2026WINDOW ROCK, Navajo Nation -- On Monday, Diné C.A.R.E. hosted a press conference with Burnham residents and other coal impacted community members at the Navajo Nation Council Chambers.
They called for the Navajo Transitional Energy Company (NTEC) to withdraw its No Name Permit application, which seeks a 110-year, 11,526-acre coal mine expansion.
The proposal threatens health, the environment, and Navajo cultural heritage.
The Burnham Chapter formally opposed the permit in February 2026, citing incomplete materials, inadequate impact review, and lack of transparency.
Advocates demand a thorough Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), coal supply plan disclosure beyond 2031, and accountability from leaders. A decision is expected next month.

KNAU reports: The Navajo Police Department says an empty uranium ore transport semi-truck rolled over Tuesday afternoon on U.S. 160 near Black Mesa on the Navajo Nation.
The truck had delivered uranium ore to the White Mesa uranium mill in Blanding, Utah and was returning to the Pinyon Plain uranium mine when the incident occurred, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
