Shungopavi Hopi website: http://www.traditionalhopi.org

For the first time in history the Traditional Hopi Elders from the Village of Shungopavi (the Mother Village) are stepping forward to speak to the public. They have a warning for the world. They say they have been told this time would come when the water would be taken from them. If this happens it will have an effect on the whole world as they are the microcosm of the world, of the universe.

GILA RIVER INDIAN COMMUNITY, Ariz. -- Since 1983, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has threatened the health, environmental quality and culture of the Gila River Indian Community (GRIC) by attempting to build the Loop 202 South Mountain freeway extension on or near tribal land.
For over 12 years, GRIC has continuously voiced its opposition to the Loop 202 extension. In February 2012, the community reaffirmed its opposition by voting 720 to 603 for the No Build option in a single-issue vote on the 202.
Still, ADOT and pro-freeway supporters like Pangea, a land development corporation, continue with their plans centered on the construction of the freeway extension on tribal land. Any proposed freeway routes, on or near GRIC lands, would destroy Muhadag Do’ag (South Mountain), threaten public health and air quality in Gila River, allow biohazardous and nuclear waste onto Community lands, destroy desert habitats of plants and animals, and allow the urban sprawl of Phoenix to invade GRIC.

First Nation and Metis denied justice fighting Shell's Jackpine Mine

First Nation and Metis groups denied effective access to justice

November 26, 2012
Fort McMurray, Alberta – Today the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation (ACFN) received a decision from the Alberta Court of appeal dismissing their application for leave to appeal a decision of the Joint Review Panel to not review the adequacy of Crown consultation before deciding whether to approve Shell’s Jackpine Mine expansion project. The First Nation is extremely disappointed and is currently reviewing their options to address the lack of adequate consultation with respect to Shell’s tar sands project.

“Our rights are being overlooked and that is a truth that cannot be denied,” stated Chief Allan Adam of the ACFN. “If there is a violation of our constitutionally protected treaty rights it should be dealt with before this project is found to be in the public interest. A project of this magnitude couldn’t possibly be in the public interest if our rights have not been upheld and we have not been adequately consulted.”

During the course of the last month the ACFN have been raising multiple concerns within the Joint Review Panel hearings on Shell’s Jackpine Mine expansion citing poor consultation and direct and adverse effects on the First Nations’ ability to continue its treaty and associated aboriginal rights to hunt, fish, trap and gather. The decision today stressed that the hearings were a part of the consultation process yet the Alberta government has been absent and even referred to themselves as “strangers” to the process.

“Who has better jurisdiction to deal with our rights and the adequacy of consultation more appropriately then the bodies that grant approval? Our rights are shuffled from agency to agency with no real remedy,” stated Chief Adam. “There has been a complete devolution of the Crown’s duty to consult pushing consultation into the hands of the proponents and downgrading First Nation rights. Our people are being failed by all levels of government.”

ACFN’s challenge to Shell’s application has come on the heels of a legal suit against the oil giant for failure to meet past agreements to mitigate impacts of their current projects. Remediation and mitigation are supposed to be dealt with through Impact Benefit Agreements made with the proponents themselves, although such agreement do not have any Crown oversight or involvement. As Shell has not lived up to past agreements, ACFN was asking the Joint Review Panel to assess Crown consultation before project approval.

The ACFN hopes this ruling will at the very least push the Crown to reassess its role and obligations with respect to the duty to consult, a role they have been absent from, and a role that the Alberta Court of Appeal says the Crown has committed to undertake.

Yaa'at'eeh Aa'ahnol't'so'h (Good Greetings Everyone),
On October 6 & 7th of 2012, many Dineh grandparents and parents gathered with their kids to celebrate the Sovereign Dineh Nation (SDN) Big Mountain Survival Camp Summer School, which was held for its last year in 1992. Long time supporter for the Big Mountain traditional elder resisters, Martha Bourke with much support and contribution, organized this commemoration gathering. More than 40 children and at least 25 young teens came to participate in activities that were very similar to the two week summer programs of 1991 and 1992. Here is a 7 minute slide show of this two day event, an event that was dedicated and an honour to the Elders and the little ones. Many others like members of BMIS and local coordinators help facilitate this rare, Indigenous-community sponsored School that was without State control.

We, SDN and network supporters, hope to have the 2013 SDN-BM Survival School again and we like to see it for more than just two days but rather have it for two weeks. And so remember us and support us Re-occuppy the Ancestral Lands, It's THEIR Future! These ancestral homelands must not continued to be occupied by Peabody Coal Company for its black-gold mine.
(Oh, BTW, "space(Face)book" has refused to post this video slide show.)
Thanks again to all those that assisted and supported these little ones and young ones, they are our future.
In the Spirit of Chief Barboncito,

Media Watch: US media collapsed because it lost all credibility

Media Watch: US media collapsed because it lost all credibility

The US media didn't collapse because of the Internet, it collapsed because it lost all credibility, from the media pandering to politicians, war and corporations, to laziness and reporters sleeping with the boss, the media cannibalized itself.

CBS Sunday Morning presents the US as if it were a white gated community. When the commercials come on, the agenda is clear. The advertisers are primarily the oil and gas industry which targets the land, air and water of people of color, and poor whites, in crimes against humanity.

The media is also to be held responsible for the unnecessary deaths and murders in Iraq and Afghanistan. The media has failed to present the truth about bogus US wars or about corporate war profiteering. By glorifying war, and concealing the truth, the media has sent young soldiers to their deaths.

The media has failed to inform the public about the high rate of suicide in the US military, or about the high rate of rapes by fellow US soldiers in the military, especially in warzones.

The truth about targeted assassinations using drones has also been largely concealed by the media, including the fact that a drone killed a US teen, sixteen-year-old Abdulrahman, in Yemen.

People like John McCain would have never been able to stay in office if the Arizona media had told the truth. If the Arizona media told the truth, US Border Patrol agents would be filling the court rooms and jails for assault, murder and drug trafficking.

If the Arizona media told the truth, there would be a house cleaning of the Arizona State Legislature. The politicians and profiteers cutting the backroom deals for coal fired power plants, Indian water rights, and uranium mining and resort development in the Grand Canyon, would be facing charges. If the news organizations functioned at all, bordertown newspapers like Arizona Daily Sun would be under investigation for ethics violations and racism.

If the Arizona media told the truth, the University of Arizona in Tucson would be under ethics investigation for partnering with US Homeland Security, and designing drones which carry out targeted assassinations. The university would also be investiaged for classes which train people to target people of color on the border, including Tohono O'odham, and for unethical cyber spying.

The media promotes the fabrications because the publishers and producers are controlled, either by their owners, their advertisers, or politicians they are catering to.

This is the main reason the news industry collapsed. It wasn't because of the free news on the Internet, and the bottomed out US economy. It is because the news industry lost all credibility.

The poor quality of news today on the web by reporters who still receive a paycheck isn't helping matters either. If you look at Indian Country Today over the past few years, you will see a formula. It involves a reporter sitting in a chair and making a phone call or two, with the hard work of others rewritten as background.

Free Assange protest at US Consulate in Australia on Sunday
night. Twitter photo, Guantanmo suits, by Assange's mother.
Also, some of the work at Huffington Post and similar publications is actually the hard work of others rewritten, or work of poor quality. The lies and corporate spin are bolstered when press releases are published as facts.

Immense damage comes from the laziness of reporters who just don't show up, who are not present on news stories and depend on plagiarism, and those who maintain their jobs by sleeping with the boss.

There was a time when Watergate-style reporters were celebrated, and whistleblowers were honored. These days they are stalked and imprisoned, as is the case of Bradley Manning and Julian Assange at Wikileaks.

Currently, the New York Times and NPR are failing miserably, as they promote the US agenda. The bombing of Palestine by Israel, and the deaths of Palestinian children were censored, or fashioned into manipulations of the truth.

As for CNN, its violations of ethics are too egregious and lengthy to list.

The UK Guardian does a good job of covering US news. Now, if the Guardian would only respond to Censored News request: Expose the wealth of England’s Royal Family, and the Pope, and reveal how much of their wealth came from the land and natural resources of Indigenous Peoples and obtained by the way of genocide.

Now in its seventh year with over 1.7 million views, Censored News is published without funds.

Zapatistas: Halt hate campaign by silver mining against Wixarika (Huicholes)

Stop the hate campaign against Wixarika (Huicholes) defending pristine sacred land

Censored News

Engish excerpt, full Spanish text below

Zapatistas have issued a demand that a misinformation campaign by a silver mining company targeting the Wixarika be halted. Currently, there is a dangerous tension in the sacred territory of Wirikuta (Huicholes) in Mexico, promoted by First Majestic Silver mining company, along with the Mayor de Catorce, San Luis Potosi, Hector Moreno Arriaga. The company and the local government have launched a misinformation campaign in communities and ejidos in the region, inciting violence and harassment toward the Wixárika.

The hatred and disinformation campaign began with a meeting held on October 26 in the town of Estación Catorce. The goal was to promote mining and collect signatures against the Decree of Biosphere Reserve which is designed to protect the sacred land, and pristine region. The misinformation campaign included threats of retaliation by way of the loss of voting rights if the people did not sign documents which would open the door for mining.

Given this scenario, the Regional Council has stated that the Wixárika Decree for Wirikuta protection should involve respect to collective human rights of the peoples of the desert and the people Wixárika. All mining activity should be halted and banned, since it has been shown that it only damages the environment, the people and whole cultures.
Therefore we demand that:
1. Stop the fear campaign of lies and misinformation waged by the mining company and the municipal government and stop a possible violent confrontation with the people Wixárika
2. Uphold the liberty of desert populations to express their opinion freely, without fear or pressure of any kind.
3. That the federal government immediately undertake a campaign to secure efficient and reliable information on the implications of increasing the range of protection for the Wirikuta Ecological Reserve at the federal level in the form of a Biosphere Reserve.
