KANSAS -- Native Americans on the Longest Walk 4 Return to Alcatraz said, "Day 64-nothing like a little racism."
Long Walkers said that after five straight days of walking they were "racially harassed" near Kansas City in Kansas. 
"Some ding dong called the police when we were circling up at the end of walking today and when we got on the van the police show up, and he claims burning sage smells like marijuana. So after some discussion, he runs me through the computer, calls three other vehicles and comes over and does a field test," Long walker said.
"Of course it comes up negative, and we are on the way but the whole incident leaves a sour taste. I told them they should improve their drug training. Earlier another police tried to stop us for jay walking. Go figure.
"Other than that it was all good. Special thanks to Steve and Nanette and family for hosting us; her father who is 91 supported us in 1978 The Longest Walk. Also to Penny and family for walking with us as well and Forest for the dinner."

KANSAS – De deelnemers van de Longest Walk 4 Return to Alcatraz zeiden : “Dag 64 – enkel maar een beetje racisme”.
De Long Walkers zeiden dat ze na 5 dagen stappen nabij Kansas City werden lastiggevallen door de politie.
“ Toen we op het einde van onze mars een cirkel vormden en salie brandden, kwam er een politiewagen aangereden. Een of andere idioot had de politie gebeld. “Salie ruikt als marihuana “ zei de politie. Na een discussie  riep hij versterking op en deed hij een test ten velde. Long Walker zei hem dat de politie dringend hun drugs training moeten aanpassen.
Daarvoor heeft een andere politie agent geprobeerd ons te doen stoppen omdat wij “roekeloos” wandelden. Wij zijn nu terug op weg maar incidenten zoals deze laten toch een bittere smaak achter.
Afgezien deze feiten ging alles goed. Wij willen Steve en Nanette en familie bedanken voor hun gastvrijheid; haar vader die nu 91 is steunde ons in de Longest Walk 1978. Ook dank naar Penny en familie die met ons meestapten  en Forest voor het diner."

Update from Long Walk 4, Monday evening: "Walk went through Columbus without incident today. The police had a patrol car escort us, and were very polite and helpful at the intersections. A flu bug has hit us, causing some Walkers to rest, but the highlight of the day was the introduction of the Children's Staff, as there are now children to carry it. On other news we are getting low on resources so if anyone out there has a network they belong to, small donations can add up. Most importantly, we are grateful for all the messages and prayers of support. Those involved in Indigenous Sovereignty issues are invited to send in their issues for posting on the website."

The Longest Walk 4 Return to Alcatraz will be walking through Columbus, Ohio, today, where long walkers were attacked by police in 2008.

Michael Lane, who was targeted by a police officer holding a taser on the Longest Walk 2 in Columbus in 2008, said the walkers are hopeful there will be no problems with the police:

"Day 22 -- getting ready to walk through Columbus today. Hope it goes better this year than 2008. We will be led by the new Children Staff for the first time today as well. Should go good, as we have prepared and communicated with the police," said Lane, who also walked on the original Long Walk in 1978.

Today, walking to Columbus, long walker Aki Zaagi said walkers finished 27 miles yesterday, and 51 miles the day before. Aki Zaagi, who walked across America in Long Walk 2 and Long Walk 3, said by phone message today, "This day, Susanna, 11-year-old from Pine Ridge, will be carrying the youth staff."

In 2011, as walkers returned home from Long Walk 3, Native American long walkers were again targeted by police near Columbus.

"Columbus is alive in the City of Columbus," said Bad Bear, Western Shoshone long walker and driver of the vehicle. Bad Bear walked across America on Long Walk 2, then again in 2011 on the Long Walk for Diabetes, in the Renegade Walkers.

Bad Bear and Manny, from Warm Springs, Ore.,  were heading home from Washington, D.C., traveling fifteen miles outside of Columbus, in the direction of Dayton. Ohio state troopers singled out their vehicle in the flow of traffic on the highway.

Ohio state troopers brought in a police dog to search their vehicle for drugs. After the dog scratched the vehicle, and found no drugs, police continued searching for drugs. The vehicle was searched three times, with police tearing out components in the door.

Bad Bear and Manny were separated and interrogated. They were questioned extensively about the sage in their vehicle, a natural plant in the west which is burned for ceremonies.

"They kept asking us about our sage, if we were smoking it," said Bad Bear, pointing out that the police were unaware of how sage is burned during Native American prayers.

The Longest Walk 4: Return to Alcatraz was initiated by those on the original, Longest Walk in 1978. The current walk across America began on July 15th, 2013 in Washington D.C. and will arrive in Alcatraz on December 22, 2013.

On the current walk are two Native American youths walking across America for the third time, Craig Luther, Navajo, and Lisa Peake, Anishinabe/Pomo.

"The purpose of this Walk will be to reaffirm the heart of Traditional Tribal Sovereignty rooted in Ceremony and land based spiritual relationships. We call on all Indigenous Peoples to come and support this Walk. 

"We have gone to Washington D.C. many times to seek justice, the protection of treaty rights, and the continuing existence of our Peoples and Ways of Life. They have had their opportunity. The time has come to reclaim for ourselves the prayers that have gone east and bring them back full circle to Alcatraz, the symbol of the modern assertion of what has been called the Red Power Movement. We Walk to educate our own Peoples on what Tribal Sovereignty means from an Indigenous Peoples way of life,” the Long Walk 4 Return to Alcatraz said in their statement of purpose.

“Here is the group morning of the fourth day, we already had a few blisters and minor scrapes, but we are willing and find that this prayer is guiding us through. We support each other as a community, and the lovely folks who provided this stay place. Lois and Dan mended our wounds, and fed us so well, gave us BEDS to sleep in on their peaceful property in the woods. We are so grateful so many are with us in this prayer, our ancestors, our community who provide in so many ways. As Lisa said, this is a community supported walk. From the supportive cheers we hear from people coming out of their houses as we walk by to the folks who embrace us into their home and care for us, to the people who drive by and who give us water. The healing of this land is already showing evidence of change through these gestures.”

"Today there was a Ceremony at the place where the original The Longest Walk ended in 1978. From there a Sovereignty Staff and Women Staff were carried twenty one miles in very hot and humid conditions." 
"We did 21 miles in 93 degree, 100 humidity. Fun had by all."

WASHINGTON DC -- The Longest Walk 4: Return to Alcatraz begins tomorrow morning, July 15, 2013, with a sunrise Ceremony from the place where the original The Longest Walk 1978 finished.  At this time, as we prepare for our journey bringing the Sovereignty Staff to Alcatraz, we would like to remember the spirit of all those that helped bring that spiritual message across the land, and the words that reflected this in The Longest Walk 1978.  It is called an Affirmation of Sovereignty of the Indigenous People of the Western Hemisphere.  When we Walk we start with this affirmation in our thoughts and prayers.

This Walk is not just for the Indian Nations of the United States.  This Walk is for all Indigenous Nations and Peoples that continue to seek and assert affirmations of sovereignty compatible with their spiritual and cultural beliefs and values.  We are hoping that those, whether they be Indigenous Nations, groups, individuals or non-Indigenous allies, that  believe in Indigenous Sovereignty will take the time to read the original The Longest Walk manifesto, and will also write us a message of their own issues relating to Indigenous Sovereignty so that we might include them in our journey.

At this time we would like to acknowledge the Oskapewis (Helpers) Walk toward the mountains of what is called Alberta.  They too have been walking in their own way to support the Indigenous understanding of Treaties and affirming the traditional sources of Indigenous Sovereignty.  We acknowledge and honor the Two Row Wampum Renewal PeaceWalk and Canoe happening in the territories of the Haudenosaunee, who have long upheld their Haudenosaunee vision of sovereignty, based on their spiritual ways and embodied in the Great Law of Peace and recognized by European nation-states, as a form of legal sovereignty.

It is our hope that those reading this will extend their support to all of these endeavours and those on the front lines in protecting the practice of Indigenous Sovereignty, from the Micmaw,trying to stop fracking, to those trying to stop the desecration of the tar sands and resultant pipelines in Great Turtle Island, to those in Amazon blockading mining development on their lands, to those in Aotearoa trying to stop oil drilling in their waters, and everywhere else that Indigenous Peoples are trying to protect their lands, waters and ways.

Long Walk 4: Navajo youth ready to walk across America for third time!

A family of Dine' long walkers from Sanders, Arizona, is preparing to walk across America. Navajo long walker Craig Luther and his family are now in the DC area preparing for the Long Walk 4 Return to Alcatraz, which begins Monday, July 15, 2013. 
Craig Luther has already walked across America twice, on Long Walk 2 and Long Walk 3. Craig said today, "The Longest Walk 4 is going to start. Those who feel the calling will be there to come and support. The walk is all of Us. All who are going to be there. It's bigger than all of us and we are simply walking in prayer for everyone. All life."
Craig's mother Boydie Nalwood said Craig's father Chris Martin will join Craig on the walk.

El proposito de esta caminata es para reafirmar el corazón de las tradiciones de las tribus, plantado y governado por la base de la relacion espiritual con la tierra(naturaleza). Nosotros caminamos con los espiritus de nuestros antepasados, por el presente y por las futuras generaciones que nosotros como personas no olvidamos, que es lo que nos hace indígenas. Nosotros caminamos para re-afirmar al mundo que nosotros continuamos todavia como libres y soveranas personas, le hacemos un llamado a todas las personas indigenas, y a todos aquellos que cuidan la tierra y la comunidad. vengan a apollar esta caminata.

In 1978 11 bills were introduced in the United States Congress that if passed would have harmed American Indian sovereign rights, with the worst of the bills calling for the abrogation of all Indian Treaties.  This inspired some people such as Dennis Banks and Bill Wahpepah to come up with a way of raising awareness about these bills and building support for Inidan Treaty rights.  They came up with an idea for a Walk across the land from Alcatraz to Washington D.C.  So on February 11th, 1978 The Longest Walk began with a Ceremony on Alcatraz where a Sacred Pipe was filled, and that Pipe was carried across the land, with staffs and other sacred items. What started as a response to anti-Indian legislation soon became an affirmation of Indigenous Sovereignty.  The Longest Walk was a spiritual walk, and the prayers were felt and heard by many Indigenous Peoples, as well as other Peoples from the four directions.  The same cannot be said by those in Washington DC.  Although all but one of the bills did not pass, the attitude in Washington toward finding new and creative ways to diminish Indian sovereignty did not end.
