A federal court just temporarily blocked the federal government from giving an Indigenous sacred site, Oak Flat, to a Chinese-owned mining giant for destruction. The ruling comes as the U.S. Supreme Court is considering whether to hear an Apache group’s appeal to protect the site.

WASHINGTON – A federal court today blocked the U.S. government from plowing ahead with plans to hand over the Western Apaches’ most sacred site at Oak Flat to a multinational mining giant for destruction.

In Apache Stronghold v. United States, the federal government recently announced that as early as June 16, 2025, it would transfer Oak Flat to Resolution Copper, a Chinese-owned mining company that plans to turn the site into a massive mining crater, ending Apache religious practices forever.

WASHINGTON – The U.S. government today announced that it is forging ahead with plans to transfer a Native American sacred site to a multinational mining giant in as few as 60 days, despite a federal lawsuit challenging the action as illegal.

In Apache Stronghold v. United States, Apache Stronghold—a coalition of Apaches, other Native peoples, and non-Native allies—sued to stop the federal government from transferring Oak Flat to Resolution Copper, a Chinese-owned mining company that plans to turn the site into a massive mining crater, ending Apache religious practices forever. WASHINGTON – A coalition of Western Apaches, other Native peoples, and non-Native allies asked the Supreme Court today to protect their sacred site at Oak Flat from destruction by a multinational mining giant. In Apache Stronghold v. San Carlos Apache Tribe Petitions U.N. to Protect Sacred Oak Flat from Copper Mine

SAN CARLOS APACHE — The San Carlos Apache Tribe has petitioned the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (UNCERD) to call upon the United States government to withhold the transfer of sacred Oak Flat for the proposed Resolution Copper Mine in Arizona.

The Tribe’s 15-page petition details the “imminent” threat to “Apache religion, culture, and spiritual well-being” from the proposed mine that would destroy Oak Flat, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a Traditional Cultural Property. Oak Flat is known in Apache as Chí’chil Biłdagoteel, which means “a broad flat of Emory oak trees.”
