Elbit, G4S, Classic Air Charter, CoreCivic and GEO Group are among the corporations profiteering and abusing human rights of migrants and refugees on the U.S. southern border, new report reveals

Elbit Systems is among 23 global companies listed as profiteers abusing the human rights of migrants and refugees around the world.

Elbit is currently constructing spy towers, integrated fixed towers, on the Tohono O'odham Nation, which allows the U.S. Border Patrol to stalk the most vulnerable O'odham, including women, children and elderly.

The Israeli defense contractor Elbit is protested globally because of its border security in Palestine.

The new report, "Financing Border Wars," details the push for border walls, drones and biometrics -- including iris scans and finger prints -- which violate the international human rights of migrants and refugees. The abuse includes tracking surveillance on phones and social media.

The border industry is directly linked to global arms sales, torture in prisons, and provides facial recognition from inside vehicles at the US Mexico border.

Reuters is providing ICE with information, the new report shows.

Australia, Europe and the United States are leading the global push to profiteer from the border surveillance and detainment of migrants and refugees.

'Financing Border Wars,' points out that divestment was an important strategy in ending Apartheid in South Africa, and is now making an impact toward ending reliance on fossil fuels and big oil.

Divestment could help halt the global human rights abuses by border profiteers, the report states.

Corporations profiteering from misery in Arizona

As previously reported by Censored News, G4S, based in the UK and Europe, operates the migrant detention buses on the Arizona border. G4S has been sued by inmates in London and Australia for abuse.

G4S staff has been employed in prisons in Palestine, Guantanamo, UK and Africa where inmates were victims of torture.

GEO Group operates private migrant prisons nationwide

In the new report, G4S and GEO Group are among the 23 corporations listed as border profiteers abusing human rights. Both are leading human rights abusers in detention and imprisonment, facing allegations of violence and abuse.


Core Civic, formerly Corrections Corporation of America, operates private for-profit prisons in the U.S. and is listed among the 23 profiteers.


Currently, the ICE contracted facility in Eloy, Arizona, has failed to provide COVID-19 safety, as the virus rampages through for-profit prisons, news reports reveal.

Wackenhut once employed security guards at Peabody Coal on Black Mesa. Then Wackenhut split into two companies for maximum profiteering from misery. Wackenhut Transportation gained the contract on the Arizona border to transport detained migrants. GEO Group now operates migrant prisons for profit nationwide. A second company, CoreCivic, which changed its name from Corrections Corporation of America, operates private migrant prisons for profit in Arizona. In Eloy, Arizona, the coronavirus has rampaged through the prison due to company failures. The report points out abuses by U.S. Border Patrol agents, who have killed migrants on the Arizona border, and poured out life saving water.

In Australia, migrants have been transported out of the country to Nauru and Papua New Guinea for processing.






Elbit's contracts, destruction and surveillance


The Israeli defense contractor Elbit is already operating spy towers on the Nogales, Arizona, border region, and tracking travelers with border tower surveillance.


Elbit's $145 million contract was granted by U.S. Homeland Security during the Obama administration in 2014 and then continued during the Trump administration.


The U.S. contract award was increased in 2019 to include the Tohono O'odham Nation and was celebrated in Haifa, Israel.

The Tohono O'odham Nation government approved the spy towers on its sovereign land. The towers, however, continue to be opposed by traditional O'odham.

The Gu-Vo District opposed the spy towers by resolution, stating the construction would destroy O'odham burial places and violates the O'odham way of life.

Classic Air is former CIA subcontactor

Classic Air Charter transports migrants for ICE. It is a former CIA subcontractor that provided rendition flights to destinations of U.S. torture.

Classic Air Charter, based in Florida, has been transporting migrants under U.S. contract from the Texas border; Mesa, Arizona and elsewhere.

Currently, Classic Air Charter, under U.S. government contract, is arranging all deportation flights in the Americas -- including migrants and refugees who

Facial recognition at US Mexico border


Among the abuses that the public has not been aware of is the vehicle facial recognition on the US Mexico border, carried out by cameras of the controversial Oak Ridge National Labs in Tennessee, the report reveals.

Oak Ridge is the top secret lab that began plutonium research in 1943 as part of the Manhattan Project.

A media multinational, Thomson Reuters is best known as the parent company of the press agency, Reuters. It is less well-known that its portfolio also includes legal and datacollection and analysis software and services.

Thomson Reuters has earned millions from contracts with CBP and especially ICE, in particular through its subsidiaries Legal West and Thomson Reuters Special Services (TRSS). Most of this comes from giving ICE access to databases with public and proprietary information, license-plate scanning data and real-time jail-booking data.

TRSS was contracted, for up to $3.4 million, to ‘help ICE monitor ‘possible threats’ against the agency’s officials’ ...

Divesting

The new report reveals that in Europe, financers have pulled out of financing for both Elbit and G4S, and dis-invested, because of human rights violations.

'Financing Border Wars' reports that the Norwegian Pension Fund, Danske Bank and the French investment firm AXA, have halted financing for Elbit.





In 'Financing Border Wars,' the Transnational Institute, TNI, describes the human rights abuses and their corporate funders.

The report also describes corporate border abusers in Ireland and Italy -- as well as Lockheed Martin weapons sales to Saudi Arabia and UAE.

The report states:

The Smart Borders sector encompasses the use of a broad range of (newer) technologies, including biometrics (such as fingerprints and iris-scans), AI and phone and social media tracking. The goal is to speed up processes for national citizens and other acceptable travellers and stop or deport unwanted migrants through the use of more sophisticated IT and biometric systems. Key corporations include large IT companies, such as IBM and Unisys, and multinational services company Accenture for whom migration is part of their extensive portfolio, as well as small firms, such as IDEMIA and Palantir Technologies, for whom migration-related work is central. The French public–private company Civipol, co-owned by the state and several large French arms companies, is another key player, selected to set up fingerprint databases of the whole population of Mali and Senegal, reports TNI.

The most prominent examples of direct human rights abuses come from the corporations involved in detention and deportation. Classic Air Charter, Cobham, CoreCivic, Eurasylum, G4S, GEO Group, Mitie and Serco all have faced allegations of violence and abuse by their staff towards migrants.

The report investigates five key sectors of the expanding industry: border security (including monitoring, surveillance, walls and fences), biometrics and smart borders, migrant detention, deportation, and audit and consultancy services. From these sectors, it profiles 23 corporations as significant actors: Accenture, Airbus, Booz Allen Hamilton, Classic Air Charter, Cobham, CoreCivic, Deloitte, Elbit, Eurasylum, G4S, GEO Group, IBM, IDEMIA, Leonardo, Lockheed Martin, Mitie, Palantir, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Serco, Sopra Steria, Thales, Thomson Reuters, Unisys.
The Vanguard Group owns shares in 15 of the 17 companies, including over 15% of the shares of CoreCivic and GEO Group that manage private prisons and detention facilities.

Other important investors are Blackrock, which is a major shareholder in 11 companies, Capital Research and Management (part of the Capital Group), with shares in arms giants Airbus and Lockheed Martin, and State Street Global Advisors (SsgA), which owns over 15% of Lockheed Martin shares and is also a major shareholder in six other companies.

Facebook board member had contract with ICE to track migrants and their relationships, NBC news reported in 2018.

"Palantir, whose chairman, Peter Thiel, is one of nine members on the board of Facebook, took in more than $4.9 million from ICE on May 30, part of a $39 million contract that began in 2015. According to a government database search, the contract goes toward “operations and maintenance” of Falcon, Palantir’s proprietary intelligence database that tracks immigrants’ records and relationships."

CANNON BALL, North Dakota -- The Red Owl Legal Collective in Standing Rock Camp urges DNB, Bank of Norway, to divest from Dakota Access Pipeline. The attorneys, who are present in the camp of the water protectors at Standing Rock, state that the pipeline is in violation of international laws and Treaties, and responsible for massive human rights abuses being carried out by militarized police.

"DNB must immediately consider the consequences and ramifications of continuing to support the ‘wrong team’, in what is now known and will be remembered as one of the most profound violations of Native American sovereignty to occur in the United States," said Red Owl Legal Collective/National Lawyers Guild.

"The Dakota Access Pipeline presents an unfolding disaster with respect to the rights of indigenous peoples and basic international human rights standards. The heavily-militarized reaction by North Dakota police, supported by officers from surrounding states, as well as by private security contractors working for Dakota Access, has crossed the line with respect to international human rights standards we expect nations and corporations to adhere to," the attorneys said in a statement today.

"Like any other large-scale energy infrastructure project, Dakota Access relies on financial institutions to provide the money it needs to construct its proposed pipeline. In addition to equity investment in the companies behind Dakota Access — which includes Energy Transfer Partners, Energy Transfer Equity and Sunoco Logistics, construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline relies heavily on debt," Red Owl said.

In its report titled “Who’s Banking on the Dakota Access Pipeline?,” Food and Water Watch has done a lot of work putting together the pieces of the financing puzzle for Dakota Access. Among the many financial institutions providing financing for the Dakota Access Pipeline is Den Norske Bank – DNB (The Bank of Norway). On November 7, 2016, DNB announced that it was reconsidering its investment in the Dakota Access Pipeline. The bank stated:

"DNB looks with worry at how the situation around the pipeline in North Dakota has developed. The bank will therefore take initiative and use its position to bring about a more constructive process to find a solution to the conflict … If these initiatives do not give appeasing answers and results, DNB will consider its further involvement in the financing of the project.

In response to DNB’s statement, the Red Owl Legal Collective, an organization formed with support from the National Lawyers Guild to assist in coordinating legal support for the growing resistance to the Dakota Access Pipeline, transmitted a letter to DNB documenting human rights abuses and urging DNB to divest from the Dakota Access Pipeline.

In this letter, DNB is urged to withdraw its funding of the Dakota Access Pipeline because of its violations of international laws and Treaties.

"We collectively request that DNB immediately withdraw its lending commitments with respect to the Dakota Access Pipeline, as its construction and use violates fundamental human rights, violates treaty-based, customary, 'good faith' international law, policy, and rights of indigenous peoples’ as expressed by the United Nations, is in violation of the 1851 and 1868 Fort Laramie Treaties between the government of the United States and the Great Sioux Nation (the Oceti Sakowin), and and potentially conflicts with numerous other international human rights standards, norms, and principles found in the Vienna Convention, Geneva Conventions, international criminal law, humanitarian law, and the International Climate Agreement (Paris), to which the United States and Norway are signatories."

The attorneys point out that this is unceded traditional territory of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and tribes of the Oceti Sakowin.

"The Pipeline cuts across the unceded traditional territories used and occupied by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the tribes of the Oceti Sakowin. This area includes numerous sacred sites, burial grounds, and serves as the land base upon which the tribes depend for subsistence, food, water, medicine, culture, religion, and life."

Dakota Access Pipeline construction has resulted in militarized police at Standing Rock.
The attorneys said there are currently over 400 active criminal cases filed against peaceful protesters, known as water protectors, who sought to exercise their voices in opposition to the Pipeline through prayer, acting in good faith under international law.

Currently, there are damages, personal injuries, physical, psychological, and emotional harm being sustained, and perpetrated against the Standing Rock Sioux tribal members, human rights defenders, medics, media, and other communities impacted by the installation of this DNB-funded project.

"Moreover, the actions of the Dakota Access Pipeline are contrary to DNB’s own stated human rights values," Red Owl said in the letter.

The militarized police have used chemical agents, rubber bullets and Long Range Acoustic Devices (LRAD). There are numerous reports of the reckless deployment of firearms and reports of multiple officers discharging weapons into a crowd and at horses, resulting in multiple injuries of people and horses.

Red Owl said there was "at least one report of an officer aiming a tear gas canister at an individual’s head, striking him in the neck." Further, there was the use of non-lethal or less than lethal firearms at close range.

Militarized police were unprovoked when police fired both bean bag guns and rubber bullets. Multiple flash bang grenades were thrown into a crowd of elderly and vulnerable people. There were numerous reports of police pushing, shoving, clubbing, and knocking people down. Further, the unsafe use of ATVs, resulted in several people being hit by ATVs.

These egregious human rights violations included the unsafe and excessive deployment of pepper spray against pipe-carrying elders assembled in prayer. The targeted use of excessive force against prominent figures included police grabbing and re-injuring the recently broken wrist (by the police on October 22) of a member of the International Indigenous Youth Council.

This unprovoked violence by police included unnecessary rough apprehension of numerous prayerful and peaceful people, including several prostrate praying women. The improper use of zip ties resulted in the loss of feeling and motion, numbness, and hands turning blue that, in some cases, continued to persist after they were removed. There were multiple reports of peaceful, surrendering individuals being tackled to the ground by groups of law enforcement officers; and numerous reports of the targeting of horseback riders, including the pursuit of a female horseback rider by police on ATVs shooting guns while following a heard of buffalo.

Red Owl has documented these militarized police attacks, including the disruption of prayer and spiritual ceremonies by tribal members, and the taking of sacred items, including pipes and staffs, from Native water protectors.

The Morton County Sheriff's Department and jail have abused water protectors with unnecessary, inhumane, and unconstitutional treatment after arrest. This includes the use of dehumanizing tactics including marking arrestees’ arms with numbers, cavity and strip searches, cutting piercings off with bolt cutters, and failing to provide food and water to inmates for long periods of time. Water protectors were imprisoned in dog kennels in makeshift conditions.

Attorney Jeffrey Haas was present when Dakota Access security contractors unleashed attack dogs on women and children, resulting in bloody wounds. Another Red Owl human rights observer of the September 3rd dog attacks writes that “several people were bitten by dogs including a pregnant woman. The people were also sprayed with mace.”

As a result of these unacceptable police practices, dozens of water protectors sustained serious injuries, including numerous injuries requiring medical treatment by the volunteer camp. There are 30 victims on file with Red Owl Legal Collective.

Dakota Access Pipeline sicced attack dogs on women and children on Sept. 3, 2016

Besides the egregious human rights abuses by police, the owners of the pipeline company have a long history of environmental damage.

"Energy Transfer Partners, the Texas company behind the Dakota Access Pipeline, and its affiliated entities, have a long history of violations of environmental laws including pending lawsuits by the states of New Jersey, Vermont, Pennsylvania, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the City of Breau Bridge in Louisiana over MTBE contamination of groundwater, as well as citations for releases of hazardous materials from its pipelines and facilities in Ohio, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Missouri, Texas, Pennsylvania, and Hawaii."

Red Owl said is clear that DNB is a major funder of the pipeline.

"Background on DNB and the Dakota Access Pipeline DNB is part of the lending syndicate that has provided a US$2.5 billion credit facility for construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline. DNB portion of that commitment is US$120 million. Additionally, DNB Bank provides revolving credit lines in the approximate amount of US$340 million to Energy Transfer Partners and its related companies, Energy Transfer Equity and Sunoco Logistics."

"DNB must immediately consider the consequences and ramifications of continuing to support the ‘wrong team’, in what is now known and will be remembered as one of the most profound violations of Native American sovereignty to occur in the United States. The history being created in the unceded traditional territories of the Great Sioux Nation in America’s Upper Great Plains continues to be written at this moment. DNB has a choice to stand on the right side of history, with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, and the tribes of the Oceti Sakowin and the world in saying “No to the Dakota Access Pipeline,” and to adhere to international and national laws in accordance with human rights. Absent divestment and cancellation of financing commitments, DNB risks being documented and remembered as a supporter of human rights violations against the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, indigenous peoples, human rights defenders, and their supporters."

Israel's Apartheid contractor Elbit Systems received the US border contract from US Homeland Security. Elbit is now targeting Tohono O'odham burial places, on the sovereign Tohono O'odham Nation, with spy towers. Gu-Vo District has said, "NO!"

The global human rights abuser G4S, known for its abusive prisons, bought Wackenhut Transportation in the US. Now the G4S buses snake along the Arizona border, profiteering by detaining and transporting migrants, with a US border contract. The G4S home office is in London, England.

Elbit Systems has targeted burial places on the Tohono O'odham Nation with "integrated fixed towers" for surveillance.

Responding to the proposed construction of spy towers on sacred land, Tohono O'odham in the Gu-Vo District said in a statement, "The Gu-Vo District opposes these proposed tower sites to protect cultural sites on the holy mountain now called the Ajo Mountain Range. The mountain holds human remains of our people and also places of our cultural practices (medicine bundles) home and home of the ceremonial deer and bighorn sheep and mountain tortoises that are protected under the Endangered Species Act."

Tohono O'odham Council approves 15th US spy tower on sovereign land, expansion of US Border Patrol occupation

SELLS, Ariz. -- The Tohono O'odham Nation has approved the lease of more of its sovereign land for US Border Patrol units and a 15th US spy tower on sovereign Tohono O'odham land. O'odham human rights activists say they have been oppressed and stalked by the tribal government because the tribal government has been coopted by the United States government.

The Tohono O'odham Legislative Council approved the use of the US military in the construction of the 15th spy tower on sovereign O'odham land, according to the May 7, 2013 resolution, despite O'odham protests over the militarization of their lands.

The Tohono O'odham Council also approved expansion of the US Border Patrol station in the San Miguel area, and waived its right to a fair market value assessment of the land. The Border Patrol station will be expanded from two to five acres. The expansion includes an operating station for spy towers, helicopter pad, fuel station, lighting and more, according to the tribe's resolution of June 10, 2013.

Three days earlier, on June 7, 2013, the Tohono O'odham Council approved the expansion of the US Border Patrol station at Papago Farms from two to five acres. The same waiver of a fair market assessment of the land was waived. The expansion includes communications for spy towers, fuel stations, helicopter pad and lighting.

The Tohono O'odham Council approved the use of three acres at Pisinemo/Kupk/Dirtburn site for US Border Patrol use, according to a second resolution on June 7. The site, which would include housing, helicopter pad, and more, was approved in secret last year. Many O'odham in the area said they were unaware of it.

O'odham human rights activists say both the Tohono O'odham government and Homeland Security have ignored the abuse and stalking inflicted on them by US Border Patrol agents. The documentation includes unjustified beatings of O'odham and US agents harassing and abusing O'odham women. Further, as seen in the photo, US Border Patrol agents' spy cameras are pointed at traditional O'odham homes, and not the border.

Meanwhile, US Border Patrol agents continue to smuggle drugs and work for the drug cartels in the area. Although numerous US Border Patrol agents have been arrested and convicted of drug smuggling and conspiracy, including serving as spotters for the cartels, the mainstream media has censored those arrest reports. Further, US Border Patrol agents have literally gotten away with murder in the shooting deaths of Mexican teens throwing rocks.

While the abuse of O'odham continues, corporations are profiteering from the migrant hysteria propagated by the media. This hysteria is spun by Arizona politicians and their lobbyists who are funded by these corporations, including border wall builders, spy tower builders and private prison operators.

Mohawks from the northern border are among those who have come to the southern border to support O'odham who are protesting the abuse by the US Border Patrol, and violations of sovereignty being carried out by the tribal government in collusion with the US government.
