THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minnesota -- Native attorney Tara Houska was shot with rubber bullets and jailed by Sheriffs deputies, bought and paid for by Enbridge and its dirty crude oil.

Tara has just been released from jail after brutal attacks on Water Protectors near Red Lake in northern Minnesota. Water Protectors are defending the rivers from pipeline construction by the Canadian corporation Enbridge and its dangerous tar sands crude oil on Line 3.

"People were shot in their faces. I saw a young woman's head get split open right in front of me," Houska told Democracy Now.

During the brutal arrests, Sheriffs deputies shoved and smashed Water Protectors faces down into the dirt. At least 20 Indigenous water protectors were arrested in Minnesota over the weekend during protests against the Enbridge Line 3 pipeline.

"The level of brutality that was unleashed on us was very extreme," Houska said.

Pennington County Sheriff's deputies based in Thief River Falls, with Sheriffs deputies from throughout the state of Minnesota, have targeted, abused and jailed Native Water Protectors -- grandmothers, women and youth -- during the past week.

After a mass action shutting down a Line 3 pump station, over 150 water protectors were arrested. Arrestees have since been transferred to Aitkin County, Kandiyohi County, Douglas County, Pine County, Todd County & Becker County. The counties are part of the 16-county Northern Lights Task Force, which has received significant funding from the Enbridge Corporation. To date, sheriffs have billed hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Enbridge-funded and state-overseen Public Safety Escrow Account.

VANCOUVER, BC - At this moment sheriffs are waiting outside the Stand.earth office at 207 W Hastings on Enbridge's orders to seize all assets of the organization.
This morning our staff was served a notice of writ of seizure and sale, and two sheriffs showed up at our door, demanding to take all of our assets.
This because Stand.earth stood up to the National Energy Board under Harper to fight against inadequate public consultation for Tar Sands pipelines in 2014 and now Enbridge is trying to shut down the organization in order to pay their court costs.
"This is an outrageous act of bullying by Enbridge", says Campaigns Director Karen Mahon. "Enbridge is a massive corporation that earned $4.6 billion last year, yet is demanding Stand.earth pay their court costs, even though time has proven them wrong."
Enbridge sees that Stand.earth is a threat, and is thus trying to stop our work.

One day after we won against forestry giant Resolute in court, pipeline giant Enbridge is shamelessly trying to intimidate us by threatening to seize our computers and furniture. This is pathetic and we won't be intimidated.

Since Monday, Enbridge has been in major headlines three times. 1 The global newspaper The Guardian featured Secwepemc Warrior Kanahus Manuel speaking out against Enbridge on tour in Europe. 2. Amnesty International USA Calls on Authorities to Protect Peaceful Protest at Dakota Access Oil Pipeline Site

After sending a delegation of human rights observers to monitor protest conditions, Amnesty International USA today called on state and local authorities to take specific steps to protect Indigenous communities’ right to peacefully protest at the site of a disputed pipeline in North Dakota.

In a letter to the governor of North Dakota, the North Dakota Highway Patrol and the Morton County Sheriff’s Department, Amnesty International USA asked that a roadblock to the protest site be removed, urged authorities to meet regularly with protesters and community leaders, and reminded officials of their duty to facilitate peaceful protest.

“The U.S. government is obligated under international law to respect, protect, and fulfill the human rights of Indigenous people, including the rights to freedom of expression and assembly.  It is the legitimate right of people to peacefully express their opinion,” the letter reads. “Public assemblies should not be considered as the ‘enemy.’”

Regarding the roadblock, which restricts southbound traffic to the protest area but allows northbound traffic to pass through, the letter states: “While reports indicate that the roadblock was initiated for safety and security reasons related to the protests taking place on the side of the highway, we are concerned that its continued use deliberately hinders access to the protest sites and camp near Cannon Ball…Any security measures imposed regarding protests, such as the use of road blocks, must only be used if they are necessary and proportionate to a legitimate aim.”

The letter states that “no parking” signs and reduced speed limit warnings would address any public safety concerns without having to use the roadblock.

“Police have a duty to protect the right to peacefully protest, not to inhibit it,” said Tarah Demant, senior director at Amnesty International USA. “There is no reason to make it harder for communities coming from the north to exercise their right to free speech, when there are less obstructive ways to protect the public.”

Protesters have gathered in recent weeks at construction sites for the Dakota Access Pipeline near the border of North and South Dakota, close to the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. The protest that the AIUSA delegation observed was peaceful. Separate court rulings are anticipated on whether the construction can continue, and whether the demonstrations can continue to take place. 29 people have been arrested in recent weeks.

The delegation will continue to closely monitor the situation and may return.   

Amnesty International has history of monitoring protests and police conduct to ensure adherence to international standards for human rights. In the United States, AIUSA has deployed delegations of observers to Ferguson, MO, and Baltimore, MD, to monitor protests in the wake of police killings, as well as to Cleveland and Philadelphia to monitor the protests outside the Republican and Democratic National Conventions earlier this year.

Standing Rock receives resolutions and letters of support from 87 Indian Nations

CANNON BALL, North Dakota -- The resolutions from Indian Nations have come in from the Four Directions, with the Tlingit and Haida in Alaska among the latest to send support to the Standing Rock Sioux Nation. Standing Rock is battling the crude oil pipeline of Dakota Access, with construction threatening the Missouri River. This river is the source of water for the Dakotas and Lakotas.

There are 28 Native American Tribes living along this river.
Now, the Standing Rock Sioux Nation said it has received letters and resolutions of support from 87 Indian Nations. The Kickapoo in Mexico are sending a delegation.

Further, environmental engineer Renee Matlock proves that the environmental assessment failed to list an endangered species present, the Poweshiek Skipperling.

This tiny endangered butterfly has the power to halt the construction of the pipeline -- a pipeline now endangering the people, their water source, and their burial places.
The permit process for the Dakota Access Pipeline was a fraud, deeply buried in secrecy and political and corporate manipulations of the public trust. With the potential of poisoning the water supply throughout the heart of America, Dakota Access Pipeline and its U.S. government partners are constructing a pipeline of genocide. In Iowa alone, the pipeline would cross rivers 60 times.

Environmental engineer Renee Matlock shows how the failure to list the tiny butterfly can halt the pipeline, if the United States adheres to its laws.
Matlock tells Censored News that the failure to list the endangered butterfly invalidates the permit.
“There are two ways the permits can be invalidated. Either through Federal Court action or through forcing the agencies that approved the permits to cancel the permits.  In this instance, there is a hearing on 24 August, 2016 in Federal Court and another on 25 August 2016 related to DAPL being allowed to continue." The endangered whooping crane, gray wolves and many more endangered species are already listed as impacted through this beautiful scenic heart of this country.

Researchers join Indian Nations and the water defenders in a wall of resistance to halt this pipeline. Currently, a campaign of divestment, boycott and sanctions is underway, with the investors in the pipeline named, including the dirty tar sands pipeline corporation Enbridge in Calgary, Alberta, along with Marathon and Phillips 66.

In its documents to the Dept of Energy, Dakota Access Pipeline reveals that this pipeline was already in the works in June of 2014 when Obama was in Standing Rock. During the permit process in 2014, the pipelines states: "Petitioners emphasize that all interested parties had an opportunity to participate in the Open Season, which commenced on March 12, 2014, and ended at 12:00 p.m. (CT) on May 23, 2014." The Dakota Access Pipeline is part of a new larger pipeline systems that goes all the way from the Alberta tar sands to the Gulf of Mexico.
While the movement to halt the Keystone XL pipeline grew, this new pipeline system was quietly being permitted in segments to avoid detection.

The Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska’s Executive Council unanimously adopted a resolution opposing the Dakota Access Pipeline.

“As stewards of the air, land, and sea, who have respect for nature and property, Central Council stands in solidarity with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe who have been peacefully protesting to protect their way of life, water, people and land.”

“The drilling required for the construction of the pipeline would disturb burial grounds and sacred sites on ancestral treaty lands.

“The Dakota Access Pipeline violates Article 2 of the 1868 Fort Laramie Treaty which guarantees that the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe shall enjoy the ‘undisturbed use and occupation’ of their permanent homeland.”

As the resolutions arrive from the Four Directions, so do the announcements that more donations are on the way. Today, there was an announcement that a cow had been donated to feed the people, a car dealer had donated an SUV to deliver supplies, and truckloads of buffalo and water are on their way. Buses were also on their way from as close by as Rosebud, while supporters were traveling by car to Standing Rock from across America today.

The Kickapoo Tribe of Kansas also sent its support for the protection of Missouri River water rights of 28 Indian Nations. The Kickapoo point out the failure of the US Corps of Engineers and the lack of a real environmental assessment.

Indian Nations point out in their resolutions the failure of the US Corps of Engineers to consult with Native American Tribes before rapidly permitting the pipeline; failure to adhere to federal laws protecting historic sites and burial places, including the National Historic Preservation Act; and failure to provide an adequate environmental assessment of the impacts.

Hoopa Valley in California answered the call for support. Hoopa Valley is sending donations and giving employees time off to go to North Dakota and support Standing Rock. Further, Hoopa Valley will be seeking alternative energy sources to reduce dependence on fossil fuels in support of the struggle.

The Northern Cheyenne in Lame Deer, Montana, sent their support  in a resolution unanimously passed by the Tribal Council. The Northern Cheyenne Nation said its villages and burial sites -- which shows their peoples footprint -- are threatened by the pipeline.
Standing Rock Resistance Radio is now live in camp, at 87.9 FM and will soon be live online, when more equipment arrives, necessary because of failed cell service.
Govinda of Earthcycles, live grassroots radio, drove from northern California for days with little sleep, and Michelle Cook, Dine' (Navajo) drove from southern Arizona to help Govinda with Standing Rock Resistance Radio. Michelle is a recent law graduate which also points out the need for more legal observers to come to the camp and join the efforts.
In camp, cooks and security are hard at work serving the people.

These are some of the latest, in a long list of supporters for the water defense of the Missouri River by Standing Rock Sioux Nation along the Missouri River.

The Dakota Access Pipeline is part of a new pipeline system that goes all the way from the Alberta tar sands to the Gulf of Mexico. The scheme was carried out in secret while people were focused on halting the Keystone XL pipeline.
Enbridge schemed behind the scenes and creating the pipeline in segments to avoid exposure and permit denial.
The scheme was already in place when President Obama visited Standing Rock Sioux Nation in 2014. Now the tar sands giant Enbridge is a major owner of Dakota Access Pipeline.
As the photo below shows, Obama was hugging babies, while not revealing the threat that was to come here. The pipeline destruction and threat is now at the Standing Rock Sioux Nation as shown below.
